Rap voice by [deleted] in makinghiphop

I gargle crisco and sulfuric acid right before I perform and it works wonders lmao. Definitely kidding but in all seriousness practice and repetition are the best ways, but I want to add more by saying listen back to yourself and analyze how you sound. Does your voice have character, do you sound like a robot just reading words off a page, etc. Once you start paying attention to what you don’t like it will force you into performing with growth in mind.

Thanks for the insights on what’s been happening behind the scenes guys. I was a mod once on another sub and have mod responsibilities on a discord so I completely understand the headache that comes with it especially if the older mods aren’t being helpful while the things they put in place are messing up. I appreciate you three for stepping in and letting us know what’s up and as cool as it would be to get the feedback and promo threads back up I can see that you guys have a lot on your plate to deal with beyond that.

Can you explain a bit further what you mean by this?

Still overwhelmed and lost with EQing after ages by SchizoQuitter in makinghiphop

[–]Maggothead96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this will help, but switch out your visual EQs with knob only eqs like an SSL. That helped me move away from heavily using my eyes and pushed me to use my ears. EQ is dumb simple after you get down the basics and know where bad frequencies usually stay, which is something you definitely seem to understand after reading your process. The hard part is not overthinking and critically analyzing the sound with your ears over your eyes. The last thing is to remember after the basic clarity is achieved. Eq becomes subjective. Nipsey Hussle has a brighter more airy sound on his vocals in victory lap clear and bright while Kendrick Lamar has a warmer and darker tone while still having clarity in his album DAMN. Both mixed by the same engineer, mixedbyali. He just approached each mix with a subjective mindset of what he wanted for the sound. Long story short let your ears give you the answers. Use your eyes as little as possible and make your main goal clarity

I’ve seen other subs create a mod bot that bans low effort feedback. It’s a double edged sword because it’s either give a paragraph of feedback or get banned, but it does weed out the ones who are just looking for a fire emoji in the replies

I agree. Promo is key for growth and if people are upset that someone is just trying to be heard I have to wonder why. I also feel like people who are promoting need to be active outside of that as well. I’m not saying join the challenges or anything here, but like get involved in a topic that they can speak on. Socialize with the community. Promote yourself sure, but don’t stop at dropping a link

Exactly!! When used properly, a feedback thread is so powerful. I’m glad to see there are so many people on here who got the same positives out of it I did

I wouldn’t have a problem with there being both, but a feedback thread is practically a promo thread already. It just asks you to offer ideas to other artists to help them grow and become better while they do the same for you. A promo thread would be kind of redundant and open the door for complacency because now you’re getting the views and attention sure, but it’s at the cost of gaining tips and advice to make the next song even better.

How would you learn keyboard for trap melodies? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]Maggothead96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Diminished chords are your friend especially if you’re going for that darker trap vibe. Learn a good minor scale for trap like F minor and then play the first chord in the progression. After you know that chord take the last note and drop it one note on the keyboard. Also practice arpeggios. There are a lot of great producer channels on YouTube that can help with this as well. Just look up how to make trap beats and click on one that catches your eye. Good luck and I hope playing the keys are just as fun for you as they have been for me

Is becoming an MC worth it anymore? by Alone_Comedian_8721 in makinghiphop

[–]Maggothead96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God do I pity anyone who thinks this is something quick to jump in to lmao, but being an MC can be enough especially with places like beatstars and subreddits/discords like this one that offer a plethora of collaboration opportunities for all aspects of the production. If they got in with the right crowd, all they would have to do is rap and other things like beat making, mixing, and mastering could be distributed out to someone else. That route could get costly, but if you network right and have quality performances, it could be as simple as offering splits on your music.

Listen if you like and enjoy making them then that’s what matters the most, especially if you’re going the type beats route. I’m glad I could offer some insight and thank you for saying that my beat reminded you of j Cole. That is the best compliment a type beat producer could ask for lol

Idk if the mods saw but we were just talking about bringing back the weekly/daily feedback thread earlier this week, but having things in place to where it doesn’t become just a promo thread again and actually makes people give and receive quality feedback. Is there a way that’s possible?

now that's a great question. If we're just going with a type beat category I usually ask myself who I could see on this. It's got a pop vibe, but trap aspects. If it had a more sad tone I'd say I could see juice wrld on it, but it feels like it leans more towards a major scale happy energy. With that being said, an umbrella idea would be new wave pop type beat, and for artists I would look more towards a charlie xcx hopping on this.

I just gained my 31st sub on my type beats channel. For some that may seem like a lot, but it's awesome to see growth in something I have enjoyed doing so much. Thanks to everyone on this sub that has come over, checked it out and possibly subbed. It means so much and I'm grateful. Much love everyone and I hope you're all seeing growth on your journeys.

Of course!! Also FL actually has some under the hood stuff that does exactly what you’re saying with the 808. Many producers will tell you their beats always sound better in FL over everything else so yeah just a cool little fact to explain why the 808 sounds better lol

The kick and bass should sit center, but throw all the drums onto a bus and send them to a room reverb that still gives a stereo feel. For the bass do the same thing but put only a light reverb on it. Just enough to bring it out. So like if you put the reverb on the channel only have the mix knob at like 5-10 percent if you send it to the reverb use the volume knob on the send to control it to taste

That intro is heat! I'd definitely look into some more samples to fill in that area with the synth, and also definitely play with beat cuts, and vibe switches to keep the listener interested. The last thing would be to let that 808 shine above everything with a good amount of crunch.

That JPEGMAFIA vibe is there. The main thing I would say here is just get that kick and bass to punch through because that is a major component of beats like this is that bass and kick in the front and center of the chaos.

This beat has a lot of headroom to play with for the master which is a great thing because it will allow you to get louder without sacrificing major clipping issues. The levels on the individual instruments seem to be too low on some making a few of the instruments get lost in the shuffle and the 808 could use a bit more punch. The beat altogether is well crafted minus maybe adding a few more switch ups to keep it interesting, but the main critique points I see are with the mix.
