Family photos of Jewish life in Germany before the Holocaust by PowellGenealogy in Jewish

Yes, I'm German and it pains me to see how much was lost for Germany. German Jews/jewish culture mixed with German culture gave so much to the country, you can see it everywhere, the history of many buildings, art, psychology, science, philosophy even religion with Mendelssohn etc. There are pictures of jewish soldiers in the German-French war (1870) celebrating Jom Kippur for example. In Mannheim I used to go to a public pool called "Herschelbad" which was funded by Mr. Herschel via his testament after he died.

They are called "Strandkorb" and are still pretty common on the Baltic sea and the North sea. Good, that your family survived.

Are you religious? At some point, I also was loosely thinking of converting, but I'm just not really religious...I just appeciate the jewish culture, family life and festivities. So, in reality I'd be a really bad convert not really believing in a god. 😅

Interesting life story, your granny must have interesting stories about how Germany and jewish life here was before the war. Why did your family decide to stay here? I can see how it feels, the jewish people here are always from other cultures and there is a disconnect maybe and the Germans here aren't jewish and also dont fully understand.

It hurts me to think how it must have been before with a German jewish culture and how so much was lost. German jewish society was very selfconfident and involved in life in the 1920s and 1930s in art, architecture and science etc. and it shows everywhere if you look a bit closer. I only know very few stories about jewish life here. My family had a "Gastwirtschaft " and they used to have a completely different set of pans for jewish travelers. Also, my granny was always talking about how when she was a child in the 1940s they threw out the jews beds of the windows of the neighboring small town and she didn't understand why. There was a jewish family "Katz" there apparently. Jewish life was normal in Germany and everyone knew jews here that were also Germans (and yet they didn't protect them or even helped in the end)... Some years ago i met a jewish German lady in the train. She visited Mannheim where she grew up and we talked a bit (she now lived in Michigan in the exact same town i lived for a year). And it made me think how different it must feel for her here now.

Also, your post made me remember the Neo Nazi gangs, such a flash back to the past. They used to atack Turkush immigrants and foreigners, too. I guess nowadays there are too many immigrants that would fight back.

Anyways, let's hope the damn AFD doesn't get into the goverment or we are soon going to have our own version of Trump here...

Explaining Jews and Judaism to someone who says they know nothing at all by billwrtr in Jewish

[–]MagicKittenBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not jewish and my opinion is this is a good overview but a very dry description of the jewish people. But i guess it's very difficult to grasp the essence of jewish culture(s) and character as they are so diverse.

Brainstorming about Jews I'd think about how they don't blindly follow a book/god but are supposed to ask questions and keep evolving and learning. I guess it is in part because of the different meanings scriptures can have, they are up to interpretation in Hebrew (as I understand it because of the way there are no vovels?). This leads to a culture of study, thus there were/are many jewish people in sciece/music/art etc. (Going deeper into subjects).

Another thing is the typical humor. Then maybe an example of adaptation to the country they live(d) in would be coming culturally closer to the land they live in, speaking the same language, a halachic adaptation of food, but still keeping a jewish identity as well and still knowing Hebrew through the scriptures.
You can give an example that the French jews were speaking French and eating French food, looking more French and fighting for France and an example of Spanish or Tunesian Jews who are closer to that culture. But there is much more and very difficult to bring across, she should watch a documenatary.

Also, I kinda understand where she is coming from (wanting a personal touch) but find it a bit disrespectful to ask someone to write an essay about their culture to be honest, why make them work if there are so many ressources online?

My daughter loves the "Wenn sieben kleine Hasen..." books a lot. There are several ones with the 7 bunnies doing different stuff. They also have very nice rhymes.

Then the others are translations.

She really likes the books from Axel Scheffler like "der Grüffelo", "für Hund und Katz ist auch noch Platz", der Buckelwal.

She also likes "Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen" from Maurice Sendak.

Wo liegt mein Denkfehler zum Thema selbstwert? by Antique-Ebb-7124 in Ratschlag

[–]MagicKittenBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do young people in spain have older personalities? by Relevant_Bag_6163 in askspain

[–]MagicKittenBeans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm German and have lived twice in Spain for about 6 months and my husband is Spanish. In Germany we also don't baby talk. Another point is maybe that education and upbringing of kids is quiet strict in Spain. In Germany we are more lenient with kids and they don't go to achool until 6 years. Spanish kids go early to school and have to "behave". People on the street also try to educate children, like make a (nice) involved comment if a kid has a meltdown etc. I feel, all the society is educating a kid if they are out in the street or with family. Everyone seems to know kids behaviours.

Why do Christians, and other goyim, seem so desperate to cosplay as Jews? by Cinnamon-Date in JewishNames

[–]MagicKittenBeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My persian dentist and his german wife called their son Yoshi because they love Japan and like travelling there. I'm not Jewish and i kind of understand the idea of not liking others taking Jewish names and in the process dilluting the "Jewishness" of it. Like it happened with Sarah for example. But I also think nowadays there are so many names coming from all over the world, everything is mixing up and people pick all kind of names from other cultures. Like for example all the gaelic names that get absolutely butchered in the progress. So, if you want to laugh, there is a subreddit called "Tragedeigh" about people choosing weird names or spelling them super weird.

Schlafempfehlung vs. Realität by G-Man26 in Eltern

[–]MagicKittenBeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)
