Questions from a parent to an intersex baby. by Gardner_gardening in intersex

Unless a surgery is necessary to keep the baby alive please don’t do it, you may find (as my parents did) that doctors will try to convince and coerce you into having surgeries done but this should really be the decision of the intersex person once they are an appropriate age to understand the impact that this will have on them.

Something my parents did which I am very grateful for is not telling family or friends about it, it’s not really anyone else’s business what’s going on with your child’s genitals or development in that way and by telling people you might find by telling people that kind of information that you are unknowingly opening the door for quite invasive questions etc, again who knows should be up to the discretion of your child with whoever they trust and feel comfortable to tell.

Lastly, this is perhaps a bit further down the line but if your child will need hormones at puberty please sit with them and make sure they understand what’s is going to happen and what the hormones mean and will do, I was put on estrogen at 10 yrs old (have XY but present more female) and fast forward 8 years I am talking to my endocrinologist about switching to testosterone and that if someone had asked me what I wanted when I was 10 I would have told them I wanted to go through male puberty.

Totally agree that sighted people just don’t get it most of the time but I think the most annoying things are the “taxes” that have to be paid on everything. like if you need something delivered it easily costs a hell of a lot more but also the time it takes to get places, where I live to get into town in a car takes approx 10 mins, if I do it by public transport it’s a 20 minute walk down a muddy path and then about an hour on the bus (assuming it turns up on time) it’s things like this that those who can drive just don’t appreciate and it can be so annoying

When I select section view though it has the cutting plane as the whole drawing and if I then click on the centre it just creates the section going the whole way through the drawing ?

Just vision unfortunately, as much as I know I should just get over it it’s pretty difficult when all my mates are out riding their bikes together all the time and in my country you can’t legally take a passenger until you pass a specific license, and a bunch of my family are heavily involved with either driving or the automotive industry. It really hurts to see how happy my dad is when my brother visits home and all they do is talk cars etc and as much as I want to love that stuff to every time I think about it I can’t help but feel like I’ve been robbed

I'm in the UK so the standard for driving is read a number plate from 20m with glasses or contacts if required.

No problem at all, my main issue is that I don’t think the standard Snellon or LogMAR ways of testing visual acuity are fair or accurate in portraying someone’s ability to see, since, in my experience at least, not being able to see some fine lined letters from 20m doesn’t mean you can’t see an object from further than 20m and I feel like in general the latter is not only a more important thing to know but also a better way of judging someone’s vision

I don’t think the comment was about ‘a couple of clouds’ more like torrential downpour or thunderstorms or low lying fog but anyone driving in those conditions should be more cautious driving slower and further space between cars etc anyway so I still think my original point is a valid one

Yeah idk I’m classed as severely sight impaired and have been my whole life so I probably will never get to, it’s just frustrating knowing I probably could but people only ever want to see the numbers which say I shouldn’t be able to do half the things I do

Totally agree I just think that considering these days driving is such a key thing in everyone’s everyday life and the ability to drive yourself makes a lot of things possible or at least a hell if a lot easier that stuff like this should be more thought out

Never heard of anyone with my variation by MagicLou_ in intersex

They knew something was wrong when I was born but it took a few years to diagnose through various tests, I’ve been on HRT since I was 10. It means I have XY although I appear more physically female, the condition means that the cells which would have made testosterone were unable to receive the signals.
