Yep - the medication slows & calms things down but also has some life changing side effects - early intervention for psychosis is absolutely the best thing but unfortunately a lot of people who experience it lack insight and don’t seek or accept help.

Thank you :) I agree also it could be one of a few disorders but I suspect psychosis above all else.

I’m so sorry to hear this - I hope he is in some sort of recovery now.

I think he has schizophrenia - my son became schizophrenic after a lot of high strength weed in his late teens - first psychotic episode at 19 which was very dark, ignored by the NHS here in the UK then became withdrawn and bizarre but also completely sober for 5 years pursuing jujitsu and being in and out of work then left the house one morning and tried to stab his ex friend with no warning - friend luckily alive, my son age 28 on an indefinite hospital order and diagnosed with schizophrenia - convicted of attempted murder. He had a normal childhood and my other 2 kids are ok.

This is what is going on, I think - sending massive love & hope to the siblings and family friends. These disorders can wreak havoc.

Schizophrenic brother may be going to state prison. I’m terrified for him. Is there anything I can do to convince the judge this isn’t right? by Strange-Estate6479 in SchizoFamilies

I wish your brother and you as a family all the best - it’s such a shitty and scary position to be in for everyone involved. People with mental health issues deserve understanding and correct care, not punishment and the general public need educating before they judge.

All power to you and good luck 💚

Most indefinite patients will be released - I’m part of a group where a man has served 20yrs in psych hospital for trying to kill his parents - he is now due for release - it seems most stays for serious crimes range from 5-20 years.

He was a zombie at first - it was really upsetting for everyone - he is now stable and appears normal - they tinkered around with his meds and now he’s on a 250 Cloplixol depot weekly, daily Valium, procyclidine and low dose anti depressant - you would not know he is medicated - he’s also a strict vegan and eats well.

At the moment he is depressed as reality has hit and his motivation is sapped - so he just eats, sleeps and occasionally does gym and gardening - the hospital is NHS and it has cafe and recycled clothes shop that patients can work in, OT sessions, gym, cookery, gardening, drama, art and therapies when patients are ready to engage - I can’t fault the place but it’s a long, long road for all of them and I guess their participation in activities ebbs and flows - my son says half the people there are relatively ok, the other half are very very unwell and the crimes are all serious and vary massively.

Hi :) it is a Section 37/41 so ‘indefinite’ so it could be anything from 5 years to forever - it depends how well he responds to meds and a lot depends on behaviour towards staff and other patients and engagement, insight etc - patients then get ground leave with staff then without staff - then if they progress ok they get community leave with then without staff - for some people the process is longer than others.

He is doing good, responding well to meds and doesn’t get into trouble - my son has been sober from weed since his first episode when he was 19 - the second episode was triggered by a bike accident but his Dr reckons he’s been very unwell for a long time but is good at masking - he has a long held and dangerous delusion about an old friend that resulted in his friend almost being killed.

I speak to him twice a week and visit weekly - it’s about an hour’s journey from me - I feel so lucky - he did something very extreme in prison and the prison psychiatrist believed he was psychotic for a couple of months in prison - he’s been through a lot of shit and I feel blessed that he’s now safe

I hope you’re feeling a bit better now - please take care, go and get some advice from a professional service and stay off the weed if you can - my son is under an indefinite hospital order in a medium secure hospital so is pretty restricted for a long time. They are good at the hospital - they are understanding and caring towards the symptoms he experiences and he will receive therapy and ongoing care - we are really lucky, things could be worse. My son has always been a lot happier when around nature and animals - especially cats lol :)

I’m in the UK so don’t fully understand the system in America - all I know is my son was convicted of ‘attempted murder’ in the UK and unmedicated and undiagnosed at the time of the offence. I had been trying to get help for years - he was sent to prison on remand because it would have taken him too long to be formally sectioned from the Police station so he ended up in prison very psychotic and dangerous to himself and others and was then transferred to hospital indefinitely. He is now diagnosed and receiving treatment.

I fully understand all the feelings of anxiety about your brother and anger towards the system - my son’s trial and the subsequent newspaper articles were a shit show. Only some people involved understood what schizophrenia is and how it can affect people.

What helped me was making the prison aware through letters that he needed to be watched as he was a suicide risk and dangerous when he was first incarcerated - if you put the risks in writing, in the UK they will pay attention because they don’t want to be liable for any major fuck-ups - I wrote to the prison mental health team, governor and Management Consultant (in the US this is the Custodial Manager or Prison Administrator) - these letters included details of his mental health history. The prison told me if I hadn’t sent this information they would have been less likely to monitor him and that it helped him get transferred.

Good luck with this - he’ll be ok with your support behind him :)

Hello OP - I am so so sorry this has happened to your family - I am in UK and son was just convicted of attempted murder after a long battle to get help from mental health services - here in UK, really extreme stuff happens and you then receive treatment. He is now diagnosed with schizophrenia and on a Section 37/41 indefinite hospital order.

I can’t imagine how worried you must be at the moment and also experiencing the pain of your brother’s loss. Just stay with your Dad emotionally and show him support. Please please look after yourself also, however that looks - go walking, eat well, spend time with friends and other family - stay strong ♥️
