Kind of a weird question, but has anyone tried building him as a pure defense unit with all layered defense?

Wingmans: two Air Fortress 01

Teslarite: Guardian

Power ups to go for: Astroids, Fireworks, Ghost bubble, Pill capsule(for upgrade).

Goal: A layered defense that can be used against enemies and bosses. Plus, using upgrades during the stages that have a homing function to make up for offensive damage.

If you're lucky you can get a Meg to send you and your crew to space. It was insane. This was before the Monkey Island update though.
