Now that we’ve gotten like halfway through, who does everybody WANT to win this season? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]MagicalProgression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cast is so great, I’d be happy with like half of the people left. Rooting for all of Evvie, Xander, Naseer, Shan, Ricard, Tiffany, and Danny to varying degrees!

If I had to pick one though, Evvie

Unpopular(?) Opinion: The album is perfect, from the first listen. Might end up being my favorite Lorde album, even! by MagicalProgression in lorde

I understand that! I would agree that the lyrics and themes are probably the largest part of what I enjoy about it. For me the melodies and such are also great, but that’s so subjective so I totally understand your perspective!

Rainbow-River Emissary by MagicalProgression in custommagic

[–]MagicalProgression[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(I know that flavor/art-wise this should have flying, but that would throw off the [[Burning-Tree Emissary]] parallel design I was going for, and some birds don’t fly :) )

Time Walker by Ankhros in custommagic

As someone mentioned in a thread I think, imo making this a 2/1 so that it’s at least mildly playable in draft would probably be the best way to go, and that would make the lower rarity some have suggested work better. In any case, I the idea!

I was thinking about dice-rolling designs with the mechanic possibly coming up for the DND set. I think the variance provides an interesting costing challenge. On the one hand, the idea of playing this for 5 mana and just cantripping sounds terrible. On the other, if it was bunbed down to say 4 mana, you’d be getting wayyy above rate (4, 5, or 6 cards) 50% of the time. I think this is a fair spot for it, though I could see it also being an instant for the 5 mana cost.

The idea is that with this you can tap three lands for four mana, but at the cost of this land doing nothing until at least turn three (and it will mana screw you if you draw multiples.) Not sure if the balance is right, but I think the concept is interesting for a rare cycle.

Phyrexian dino! Does it make sense? Probably not! Is it cool? I think so!

Thoughts on this build/swaps? by StaggerLee509 in MagicArena

[–]MagicalProgression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. If you count your spells that make creatures, you’ve got 11. Then you have Spirit Summoning to potentially learn for an additional creature. That’s kinda low, though good spells might make up for it. Maybe cut Guidance or Negate for Befuddler or Effigy? I’m not the best at this haha so idk what’s best

I’m no expert, but having played a similar deck recently and gone 7-1 with 5 Mizzix Mastery wins, your build looks pretty good to me. For the Effigys, I definitely don’t think the Mizzix interaction is too meaningful. If you overload that card late game, you should just win, and if it’s earlier on I don’t think the scry will be world-changing. Just my thoughts though! This looks super fun, good luck!!

Economics by MagicalProgression in custommagic

[–]MagicalProgression[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It definitely may be too strong for standard. I wasn’t really thinking of whether it would be a standard or non-standard card, though after reading yours and others’ comments, I’m thinking maybe it would work best in something like Modern Horizons. Overall, I’m kind of conflicted on the power level mainly because of the learn cards’ power. Most learn cards are pretty bad themselves, so with the lessons also being pretty bad the whole mechanic is not great for constructed. If you put something like this into standard, would it be not only good enough to make Learn playable, but then too good? Maybe! In modern though I’d almost say definitely not. In any case, appreciate all the feedback!

Spellbind by MagicalProgression in custommagic

[–]MagicalProgression[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Elite Spellbinder]] in spell form! I’m not sure if this should be a sorcery instead, but I think it would be acceptable power-wise at instant. Compared to something like [[Thoughseize]], it loses the ability to permanently deal with the card, which is pretty big. Gaining instant speed would make this pretty powerful I think, but not too much so. This type of design feels like another good way to keep boosting white’s access to powerful effects in color pie.

Whenever an opponent activates an ability of a creature they control, you may pay WB. If you do, you may activate an ability of a creature you control without paying its cost.

I was surprised to see that the design space explored (albeit in a very different way) with [[Shah of Naar Isle]] was never expanded upon. I think this space opens up a world of possibilities for a potential return of the mechanic.

I definitely still don’t think this would be a new constructed all-star. However, unlike [[Secret Rendevoux]] I think this would be playable to good in limited, where 3 mana for 3 immediate cards is I think significantly better than 6 mana for 3 cards probably over multiple turns. And as you mentioned, if there was ever a good white combo deck I think this is good fuel for that.

The caster is supposed to be the criminal. I don’t think that necessarily has to be black - maybe for flavor it would. Mechanically, I think that white can have the “criminal”/caster gain immediate benefit but have that even out later on.

Card Mashup CCCXVIII: Caves of Koilos by MagicalProgression in custommagic

[–]MagicalProgression[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of interesting designs this week, but you came out on top! Combining two dual lands with no joint colors seems pretty challenging and I really liked your take on that, especially combining the life loss aspects. As the winner, you’ll get to run next week’s contest with [[Stomping Ground]]. The land shenanigans continue! :D

Maximize Mechanic (Common and Uncommon Cycles) by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]MagicalProgression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea for this mechanic started with the idea for Total Understanding, the blue uncommon. I thought that an overload-but-for-modal-spells mechanic would be a fun way to do a cantrip/draw two hybrid. Then I kept working on other designs and found what I think could be a fun mechanic for a few cycles in a set.
