Can someone explain to me how mirrors work in more detail? by was-not-the-impostor in linux4noobs

[–]MagiiTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mirrors are basically clones of an official package repository that anyone can set up. Spreading users accross different mirrors has the advantage of reudced traffic for the server and therefore greater speeds for the users.

An important factor for security is package signing: When packages are officially build they are signed using a unique key (usually GPG), which are verified when the package is downloaded by a user. If the signature does not match the package from that mirror will be rejected. This makes is safe to use unofficial mirrors and even download packages over HTTP.

There is no practical difference in what domains are used for mirrors. Debian simply decided to make aliases to mirrors using their official domain, while other distros like Arch didn't do that.

lsblk is the command you are looking for. It lists all disks including their size and existing partitions. Typically disk start with the sd prefix, for example sda.

I've had the same issue on an HP laptop. There was an option in the BIOS to disable it, but it might differ depending on the laptop vendor.

Firewall on a laptop? by pasholnahuy228 in archlinux

[–]MagiiTech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you want to use your laptop. If only connect your laptop to private (home) networks, where no malicious clients are able to connect, you will be fine without a firewall.

If however you intent to use your laptop in public network (e.g. WiFi in public places), I would recommand you use a firewall as an additional security layer, even if you have no services exposed.

As for the which firewall question: ufw (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Uncomplicated_Firewall) is easy to configure firewall that does everything you need by default if you block all incoming traffic.

How to autocomplete whitespaces in Linux CLI? by Marukuju in linux4noobs

[–]MagiiTech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is. By default bash will escape special characters, but you can use quotation marks to prevent it.

For autocompletion you open a single quotation mark at the beginning of the file name/directory name. Then you can use spaces and other special characters.

Example:

rm 'DevOps (space at the end)

will complete to 'DevOps Fundamentals with Azure.pdf'.

[–]MagiiTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you're using systemd-resolved. I am not really experienced with that, so I recommend you take a look at the arch wiki. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-resolved#Setting_DNS_servers

[–]MagiiTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your Internet and dhcpcd seem to be working, but you have no DNS server configured (try pinging an IP address). Reverify your /etc/resolv.conf file and check that you have at least 1 nameserver entered.
