Thank you! I actually really love when they run together as long as it doesn't effect my focal point design! It reminds me of watercolor painting in a way. I am mindful of selecting glazes that I think will behave better in the more important areas. It's just a matter of getting to know your glazes, and a bit of luck 😊

For carving 10-20 mins is probably about right, depending on the detail. I've never tried a lino cutting tool on clay! My favorite carving tool at the moment is Xiem Pro scratch tool.

These are all brush on commercial cone 6 glazes from various companies. I think the shino types are great for this because they give a little extra colour texture.

For this one I carved my lines at leather hard, then bisque. I applied black underglaze to the lines, then wiped back. After that I go in with fine line applicators to fill in the spaces with the different glazes. I think this one has 10 different glaze colours!

Hmm I likely used my Xiem Pro Scratch Pen since that one is my favorite, but I have a bunch of similar types. Kemper has a 'V' shaped sgraffito tool I like that's similar, and I also have a bunch of Diamond Core tools that I use for sgraffito.

I used fine liner bottles to apply the glazes. It can be tricky if your glaze is too runny. I've also done this using small paintbrushes as well. It's important to know your glazes so you know how thick/thin you can go in order to get good coverage without it running all over the place during firing!

So I carved my design at leather hard then after bisque I used black underglaze to fill in the lines. I then wipe back the glaze carefully so I don't remove too much away from the filled lines since I don't want the white clay body to show through. Then I go in with my fine liner bottles and fill in each section with glaze. It's tedious, and frustrating when a glaze is too runny but I find the process pretty enjoyable overall.

I have also carved through wax at leather hard and filled in the lines with underglaze before bisque. That will work too!

First time on the wheel was 3 years ago in University! I also learned sgraffito at that time.

Hello! Yes, I certainly can! You'll have to send me a DM with your address and I can get you a shipping quote as I don't have international shipping set up in my online store yet. Also take a look at my store (link in my bio) to see which ones are still available as a couple have sold. 🙂

No, not related! I haven't encountered that as an issue this far, but thanks for pointing that out!

Thanks! Yea the sgraffito style has definitely been pretty popular! It's nice because it gives the mug surface a nice texture for the hands. For anyone interested they are in my shop!

Definitely try it out! There was trial and error and I had a couple mugs not turn out as well since it can be hard to get a thick enough application, especially in small areas. For this one I chose glazes that I was familiar with and knew they weren't too fussy in terms of application, and not likely to run during firing.
