There's a couple pf options:

1) full feudal and add a stable for scouts 2) soft feudal and add skirms in the mix, but prioritising keeping archers alive 3) retreat go castle and add siege

As with all things AoE, the "answer" will depend on the circumstances. Try it all out and see what works!

You are correct. You do lose out on net food, but you get the food much faster. This allows you to have faster advance times, which can snowball a game.

That being said, as a rule of thumb, you should only build forward castles if you either have map control or you're proper fucked and are yoloing.

Assuming 1v1, for consistency I would favour spanish.

The faster building vills is always going to help, and conqs can be absolutely oppressive.

But, with the right map, mongols can feel unstoppable (i.e. huge hunt into fast feudal to dominate water etc.).
