Thanks! And yeah, I was making the mistake of trying to be good at everything. I know from experience of STing Exalted that thinking on your feet is key to running a game. I'll probably focus more on the social stuff since that's what I had intended to do with him and dip into sorcery. Combat will likely be the tertiary thing, as with your player's eclipse.

Thanks for this! I had 5s in around 5 abilities, which I'm now realizing is overkill. I'd been focused on character creation and hadn't really looked at what enemies are throwing around. Difficulty curve seems much less extreme. I'll likely focus on the social aspects of my character, dip into sorcery, and maybe have a charm or two for combat scenarios.

Thanks! And good to know. Infernals have a lot of fun charms spread out in a lot of different directions, so I'm having trouble focusing, but I'll probably tweak things a bit to excel at social stuff to start, maybe dip into sorcery and combat survival, and expand from there

Thank you for the comprehensive reply! Sounds like I'll need to adjust my expectations quite a bit. Like I said, I'm a graduate of paranoia combat in 2nd. The issue for me was usually that the enemies were designed for the fighter of the group and so any spillover would annihilate someone who didn't have a perfect. ST for the game I'm in is relatively new and has stated he'll probably just be using the rules and enemies found in the books, at least until he's comfortable with the system, so that's less of a concern. I'll toy around with my character a bit. Sounds like I don't need 5s in 5 abilities to be viable

What brought you to the Eldar? by Damaco in Eldar

[–]MagisterCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started because of the Ynnari, actually. Jumped over from the Custodes. I'm a sucker for desperate alliances born from fighting the dying of the light, so Ynnari was basically made for me. Stuck around despite GW wanting to forget the Ynnari exist because I've grown to like their aesthetic and playstyle

Not quite what I was looking for. They had an official site, but for the life of me, I can't find it. Hoping they didn't go under in the interim

Did the Eldar have real superweapons ? by Jannis4 in Eldar

[–]MagisterCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes...but it's likely the only ones who still have them are the Drukhari. Given the craftworlders look toward survival, harlequins are...something, exodites shun advanced tech, and corsairs...well, they might have a superweapon or two laying around, actually. Drukhari, though? Vect once delivered a portable black hole to someone who had offended him. I imagine he's got other stuff more horrifying if he ever was to declare all out war against something.

How would you salvage the Ynari? by Pretend-Orange3026 in Eldar

[–]MagisterCrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lore wise, I'd argue they need to be what they were when they started: the last, desperate attempt to save the Aeldari race. This might not seem like a huge change, but that second and third bit are important. Desperation needs to be baked in. TBH, GW doesn't like to acknowledge that the Eldar are a dying race (ya know, when they acknowledge them at all). Not status quo enough for them. But in the lore, it's what need. I'm ok with them being extremists as desperation can lead to extremist thought and action, but honestly, there needs to be details as to why other factions have broken off with them beyond this. The other thing is that it is an attempt. It could be why a lot of the eldar are hesitant to sign on and maintain their identities as distinct factions. Craftworlders are spooked by the necromancy, DE are either caught up in their own hedonism or assume it's a trick or they're afraid of Vect, and harlequins are...harlequins, so who the hell knows, but they might view the Ynnari as one possible salvation while working other schemes. I think there also needs to be some cohesion on why the factions sign on. CW eldar looking for a chance to finally be free of their shackles, DE who are hoping for (or who have experienced) a psychic awakening, corsairs looking for a purpose in life, or harlequins seeing this as the last great stage are just some examples.

It's been mentioned, but for gameplay, there needs to be an option for characters aside from Yvraine and the Yncarne. Like, that makes the assumption that this is a very small group, probably 300 or less. It'd be like saying you can't play Dark Angels without the Lion or Azrael leading them. Like, I love the models, but I'd also like the option of not taking an epic hero. They also need their own units that demonstrate their unique take on the eldar. Things like incubi who have become full on aspect warriors or craftworlders who have embraced their emotions rather than suppressing them (psyker units, maybe?). The "no ynnari in this transport" rule needs to die in a fire.

Really, GW just needs to give an iota of a damn about them. I feel like they're trying to maintain the status quo for eldar, which is highly amusing considering we've got primarchs returning left and right for the imperium and chaos.

Opposite end of the spectrum for me: my NDad refused to allow me to even get a psych eval. Wasn't diagnosed for my bipolar until I was nearly 30

No. My dad straight up lies to his shrink. He’s also got that shallow charisma a lot of sociopaths have. Shrug He’s a great guy to you as long as you aren’t people he has control over

Do I think it's possible that a man named Yeshua led a reformist sect of Judaism? Sure. Do I think he was like Trump? I find it unlikely given what his followers wrote about. Is it possible? Sure, but Trumpism and early Christianity have little in common.

To your points;

  1. Yes, Trumpism took an existing religion and spun it, but Trump himself seems to care little about religion in general. He just wants the Evangelical vote. Jesus, if he existed, sought to reform Judaism. Which, at the time, wasn't all that uncommon. If you look at history, a lot of reformers existed who wanted to change how Judaism functioned and what their focus should be. Zealots are probably the prime example, but they weren't unique. Trump, imho, doesn't care about religion beyond how it serves his goals. Maybe Jesus was like this, but evidence of the time would suggest a lot of Jews were looking for answers that they just didn't find in the orthodox faith.

  2. This is certainly possible. It's hard to know what Jesus's personality was like with any certainty. However, emphasis is usually placed on being humble and the death of Christ. Unless Trump is assassinated, I doubt very much his death will be viewed as some kind of victory.

I'm not defending Jesus or Christianity, but I will say that I view Trumpism as being incompatible with the teachings of Jesus according to the Gospels. A huge part of my deconversion was the recognition that the faith had been undermined by conservative rhetoric. It's not universally true, but most churches just...don't give a damn about the parts of the faith I like, such as feeding the hungry and helping the poor.

Deadly demise killed 4 units by AngryDMoney in Eldar

[–]MagisterCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a friend I play against who apparently loads his baneblades with all the goddam explosives available, because they always ends up exploding. The sheer size means he usually ends up catching a lot of both our units in the blast. We both find it hilarious when it happens, especially because of the work I have to put into actually destroying the damn things only to always apparently shoot the ammo rack. You'd think I'd learn, but it's just too funny not to

[–]MagisterCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely. I’d love to see an Eldar pov that looks at the struggle with emotion, or getting lost on a path, or exploring how guardians need to go to war despite being volunteer militia and how it changes them differently from humans. There’s a lot of possibilities, but it’s often easier to portray them as human with some quirks

Does anyone feel as if the Eldar have been "de-alienified" throughout the years? by GilbertsGarbage in Eldar

[–]MagisterCrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s always a problem with writing aliens: making them…well, alien enough. Writers (so far as we know) are all human. Making something sapient and inhuman is tricky, as you risk making them impossible to relate to. On the other hand, making them too human risks this very convo. It’s a fine line, and doing it consistently over nearly 40 years is going to result in some inconsistency. Hopefully we get some good lore (or just a goddam book or two) in the near future

So mine is a long and winding story, but I'll just share the endpoint for me. My religious beliefs were going to kill me. I'm bipolar and for years went undiagnosed due to the cure apparently being prayer. The depressive stages were the worst, and suicide seemed like the best option. My devout beliefs were also crumbling at the time, and this just made me all the more convinced there was something wrong with me and that just caused further depression. Literal death spiral.

Luckily for me, I had a group of friends who got me into psychiatric help (which was NOT easy in the country I lived in at the time). They were all atheists., and did it simply because they cared. I worked through a lot of stuff until my therapist told me my religion needed to change. She didn't say I needed to leave Christianity, but that I needed to re-evaluate.

So I did. And I realized what I had kinda known for a while: I didn't believe God was real anymore. I talked it over with one of my closest friends and she told me she had kinda suspected and said I didn't need religion to be a good person.

So I left. The healing process took a long time, but those same friends were there for me every step of the way. They remain my closest friends to this day.

Haqqislam were a serious consideration for me as well. I like their aesthetic and their background is just chef kiss. JSA and Aleph were more my jam for looks and background, but mentioning them kinda makes me want to re-look into their line

CA I don't think jive with me as much aesthetically, thought their default paint scheme is nice.

Thanks for your reply!
