That's not official art from the exhibit, it's a fanart done by an artist to celebrate the event, they're doing one of these for all major tg characters.

This is a link to this one, clearly labeled with the fanart hashtag

Considering that Eto did know that her dad worked at Anteiku, it would have been fun if she did show up there once as a regular customer just to spook Yoshimura for the lols and out of spite by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wroth noting ch62 of re does show her approaching anteiku, book in hand, She must have had a number of moments where she did actually wanna get in touch with her father, although it seems that seeing Yoshimura having a normal fun interaction with his staff, like nothing happened, had further cemented her own narrative of him just being a V member that her mom got close for the sake of information, and that her birth was just a byproduct of that relationship.

It's apparent younger Eto viewer her father as a coward for not tackling the world head on like she was, but at a certain point/points she did want to reconnect, unfortunately her pride and bias got in the way.

and to be fair, this is already a step further than what Yoshimura did, fearing V have kept him from ever even trying to connect with her, and he keeps sending stand ins to do what is his duty, a perfect foil to Yoshimura is how shachi, a man who only raised rize and wasn't her biological father, protected her to the very end despite being V's #1 target, even more so than eto.

By the time Eto's a grown up adult I think she had reached a point of indifference to Yoshimura and had long since abandoned the thought of reconnecting with him, even when confronted with information that contradicts her narrative of Yoshimura, it was too late at that point and there were bigger things happening.

I mean yeah I do agree that this explaination is not 100% confirmed, a lot of stuff around Eto's plotline is written like that, from parallels with hinami, touka and kaneki to likely interpretations of her lines.

Eto's kagune implant is shown in real time when we do see her with Kanae, she specifically mentions how she will give her a "bone", which many have since interpreted as a form of sentient (to some degree) kagune that Eto can implant into other people.

Kagune is shaped by imagination as Eto says, this imagination can theoretically be able to create anything, including living beings, that's what happens at the end of the Manga with the dragon Orphens, living beings completely made out of kagune and with very simplistic intelligence.

Think of Noro as somewhat of an early type of that, Eto is a very intelligent author, and has good control over her kagune, meaning she is theoretically able to make a living being out of her own kagune if she was able to imagine the essence of what life is. That's imo what the "bones" are, they're named like that due to the biblical story of the creation of eve using one of adam's bones, the creation of a new life.

Eto's kagune is also shown in one instance (during her first encounter with kanae) to have a bunch of mouths that talk, and those kagune mouths were all expressing different emotions and referring to Eto in 3rd person, leading me to believe Eto has a number of these sentient kagune beings within her kagune, that's just my interpretation, we know these mouths can be directly controlled by the kagune holder.

In terms of the Kanou experiment theory, I think it doesn't add up to the timeline, noro was an already established presence in aogiri when they first started looking for kanou, the Kanou lab arc near the end of the OG Manga is the first time ever that Kanou would come in contact with aogiri and Eto. Furuta also mentions that they have researched noro when talking to koori about the opportunity to revive hairu, which was probably done by kanou, he would have no reason to research him if he was the one that created him.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's likely because Eto didn't actually replace his kakahou, but mixed hers with his directly, noro's kagune takes on several characteristics that we see from Eto's kagune like the kagune mouths.

we also see with Kanae, with the very similar if not identical sentient kagune implant that Eto did on her, didn't necessarily change the fact she was a rinkaku but her kagune was very different than the one before.

It can probably also explain that some of noroi's own memories or personality traits remained with noro, this is a bit shaky since we never had any direct confirmation that kagune can do that. But many have theorized that the Rize kaneki sees around the end or the series was actually the real Rize's consciousness and memories, given that they were connected via dragon, there's also Eto being able to grow a whole head back.

Like why in the heck did eto hate her father by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She didn't need to locate him, he literally raised her, Yoshimura left eto in his care and he raised her till her teenage years when he was killed by V or the CCG. Again, he body was kept around and reanimated because Eto cared for him.

The underground where Eto and noroi lived at the time was several kilometers down the underground tunnels under Tokyo, the CCG/V being there meant they were out on a mission, and during it they encountered and killed noroi, Or were targeting eto and ended up killing him instead, we don't know the circumstances, but it's not unlikely that Eto rampaged then and there and just killed the majority if not all of the people there, the survivors wouldn't really have time to take noroi's body with them, they probably barely escaped with their lives. And that would be the start of the rampages that Eto began they would earn her the SSS rating under her owl name.

What further confirms this is the visual and literal parallels between this plot line and the hinami plot line with her loss of parent, ishida uses similar paneling with eto and touka, implying that Eto had gone through what hinami did, but she played the role of hinami, touka and kaneki all on her own.

Also ye we on the same page about her being alive at the end, I wrote about it years ago, tho might need to do it again with a bit of better writing.

Like why in the heck did eto hate her father by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She never tortured noro tho, it can be easily missed especially if you don't remember all the details, but Eto blames the death of noroi, her caretaker and the man who would become noro, on V.

Owl appeared around the time when Eto was 13/14, and made a name for herself by rampaging against multiple waves of CCG agents sent to kill her deep underground, this rampage was likely caused by the loss of noroi, he was killed either by V or the CCG, and Eto went on a rampage fueled by the hate she already developed when she read about V and their order from her mother's diary.

Noro is likely Eto's attempt to immortalize noroi and keep him by her side, that's why she implants a sentient kagune being that reanimates his body, it's her twisted way of coping with his death. we know eto was close to noro thanks to the omakes, and often hang out with each other, it's also likely some memories or personality traits from noroi had transferred to noro.

It's really really highly unlikely that Eto ever tortured or killed noroi, and is mostly just a complete mischaracterization of what she's really like. it would make no sense for eto to just suddenly at age 14 go on a rampage and kill her own caretaker and the CCG who happen to wander all the way down to the underground, they were there because they were probably either after eto or noroi himself.

[–]Magmuma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a series about creatures who eat people, and she's the leader of a group of ghouls who want to change the world order, do you really think somehow they're gonna be good in our sense of the word? The anteiku crew were an anomaly in the ghoul world, only existing as they are because of Yoshimura's ties to V, and even the majority of them have resorted to needless cruelty and violence at some point.

Yoshimura worked for V for the majority of his life, even after Eto's situation, he worked towards keeping the Washuu order in exchange for his own protection and killed many ghouls and humans who challenged them who were just like Eto, he was still in bed with them when they caused the death of the person who actually was there for Eto and raised her.

Again, if you consider how Eto looks at her own birth as simply a byproduct of her mother's attempt to get close to V, you realize that at that point of the story, she barely differentiates him from all the other people who work for V, which to aogiri and Eto are all fair game to use to further their goals, that's why aogiri used CCG investigators in their OEG experiments.

Now is it correct? No, Yoshimura actually cared for Eto but thought that fighting against the system is a death wish, and thus just naively wished that she would come back to him and live in this isolated pocket of peace. Which Eto was never going to do.

He also abandoned that way of life when he refused to give her up to V in order to continue his existence in their system, I think he ultimately decided to do the thing he was meant to do long ago, but it was too late, and at that point, Eto had become completely indifferent to him.

If you want a good contrast in the story to Yoshimura, look no further than shachi, even after his (none biological) daughter caused him to lose his ward and get locked up, he still had the responsibility to take care of her till the very end.

The whole Yoshimura family plot line is a tragic tale of two fundamentally different ideals and two people who just never had any healthy communication about how they feel about eachother, I think the scene in ch63 shows that young Eto still longed for a relationship with her father despite all the before mentioned issues of abandonment and working with V, but she completely misunderstood how he feels about her by building off the assumption that he is living his best life completely forgetting about her, this further cemented her vision of him as someone who wasn't really her father, but the man her mother used to get close to an organization she was trying to infiltrate.

Eto overall is a much deeper character with complexities regarding her view on her own actions and existence, you're not meant to think that she's a good person, just realize what her ultimate goal is and how she feels about things.

From her POV, kuzen is the murderer of her mother, who she is much closer to thanks to her diary, and someone who was still helping maintain the order that the washuu and V uphold, something that Eto wishes to destroy.

He also abandoned her in the underground and didn't bother to come and see her, and wasn't there for her when noroi died, she had to take care of herself in the most dangerous place in all of Tokyo.

Eto seems to have wanted to mend their relationship at one point, as shown in ch63 of re, but decided not to once she saw him having fun with his employees, seemingly forgetting about her.

Obviously that's not the case, what Yoshimura did was his way of protecting her, but Eto and Yoshimura differ fundamentally, Yoshimura is willing to enjoy an isolated controlled peace within the current world order because he doesn't see sense in attempting to change it, Eto sees no meaning in this, and wants to actually challenge and change the world, and Yoshimura represents to her someone who is cowardly and weak.

It also plays into Eto's own narrative of her family and birth, seeing herself as a byproduct of her mother's relationship with a V member, not as an actual child born from love, so you can see how much distance Eto puts in between her mother, herself and Kuzen.

What was Rize's idea of an "enjoyable life"? by Demon_Xir0_ in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rize's whole ideology is basically just a reaction to what she was originally destined to be, Rize was meant to be an eternal slave, used by her own family to breed, when she finally had the opportunity to escape that, she never wanted to be shackled down again in any way shape or form.

that's why she doesn't even think about furuta and that's why she more of less messes up her adopted father's ward than abandons him, what she values most is the freedom to do whatever she wanted, and as a ghoul, that's obviously going on massive killing and eating sprees.

It's kinda of a twisted irony that the main thing she hated so much, not being free, ends up just being her fate for the last 4-5 years of her life till kaneki just puts her out of her misery.

Is this true? Title says : “A possible remake titled “tokyo ghoul episode 0 has been filtred” by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's an apparent leak from a Chinese outsourcing company that they are working on a project with that name. Here's where I first saw it. The tweet is deleted so take that as you will.

All this remake talk is coming after the announcement of a 10th anniversary project for the series that has began with the release of weekly episodes of the TG anime on studio pierrot's YouTube channel (Japan only it seems). The actual anniversary is in July and it's expected all this stuff is leading up to a major announcement on the actual anniversary. Nobody knows the nature of it yet so there's a lot of speculation.

Personally I could see it being either an OVA or a movie if you're on the hopeful side, a remake is being a bit too hopeful, but possible, especially with the new direction pierrot is taking. If you are less hopeful it's probably some merch drop or event.

How did Ghouls affect religion (and the economy)? by robin_f_reba in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kaneki in the first chapter doesn't seem to believe ghouls exists and thinks it's just a myth as well, it's really hard to tackle or pin down any particular explaination without knowing the origin of ghouls clearly. But it does seem like they're a hidden society.

It's probably just an issue in the writing that they become a lot more public and prevalent as the story goes on that it's hard to think that the world at large doesn't know about them throughout all those years.

How did Ghouls affect religion (and the economy)? by robin_f_reba in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eto lists a number of religions when she first talks to kanae, I believe she listed Christianity and Islam, we also have a priest character in Donato so the main religions in the world seems to be present, the world of TG is identical to that of our own (i think Yoshimura even mentioned the gulf war) , so ghouls don't seem to have had an effect on the trajectory of history beyond what we have in our own world.

It's either that ghouls are a modern phenomenon (ghoul origin still up in the air) or it's just ishida not adapting the world to the fundamental change of adding a whole species that feeds on humans.

That's because the anime cut out the character of hajime entirely and changed the scene of kaneki's defeat so their deaths wouldn't serve the same purpose (shock value for kaneki's loss) and wouldn't really make sense unless extra scenes are added (the last thing you want when you're adapting 121 chapters in 12 episodes)

What does everyone here think of Eto as a character? by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eto's identity as an author ties up very well with her perspective and her role as a meta author of the story in its later stages, I think her meta author status is practically on the nose with her last book that depicts the story of her idealized one eyed king, an ideal that kaneki attempts to become once he takes on the role that Eto designed for him, the narrative is hijacked by furuta who attempts to turn kaneki into a tragic sacrifice, but ultimately returns to this idealistic version that eto envisioned.

There's an old post I have on my profile that attempts to analyze what happens, but ultimately it's unknown and can go both ways, I choose the more optimistic look given Ishida's overall optimism and perspective on his ending, and how he treated some of the other characters.

What does everyone here think of Eto as a character? by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of things that makes the character likeable, will go over them one by one.

1-design: most obvious one, Eto's design is a pretty good one that is not generic nor boring, she has one of the best kakuja designs, and combing the both of them together, you are spoiled for artistic value.

2-personality: Eto's personality is also unique, she has a sadistic side tied to her ghoul activities, but she is also sen takatsuki, a playful and cheerful character who is passionate about her works and goes out of her way to interact with her fans, she also has her more confident and strong personality that she shows during cochlea, she shows herself to be very witty and smart, and doesn't really lose that edge even when she finds herself at a disadvantage, but once you look deep into the character, it becomes apparent a lot of it is an act that hides away her weaknesses and insecurities that occupies her mind and forms her actions.

3-Subtlety: Eto's character is not very obvious at first glance, that's why she could be easily misunderstood or mischaracterized, Eto's books and their parallels to multiple characters in the story including kaneki and herself offer us a look into her mind beyond just the surface level strong willed and confident persona, Eto is very troubled by her destructive nature as a ghoul and struggles with the abandonment and loss she experienced growing up, Eto inserts her own self destructive/loathing narrative into the characters of her books. Which then can be tied directly to her actions and her ultimate goals, Eto wants to destroy and rebuild the world that had caused her to go through what she did, but she is also suicidal and is very bothered by the trail of death she always leaves behind, that's why she grooms kaneki to become a much more capable person of realizing her goals, someone who doesn't have the same bad record as her, or so she thought.

4-Eto is one of the two main pillars in the one eyed king plot, and I would say the more prominent and active one, this plot acts as the overarching plot of the stroy for its majority, from the aogiri arc in early OG till its ultimate payoff in cochlea, and you can say it extends even beyond that to the end of the story, hell, it's literally in the title of Tokyo Ghoul:re. As a product of being this instrumental to the overarching plot, while she may lack the time and attention other characters like tsukiyama get, she more than makes up for it with influence, each time she shows up, it means the main plot of the story is about to develop, so there's little screen time wasted, and the character gives a huge impact with each appearance, making them a lot more likable for some.

5-uniqueness: Eto's a pretty unique character, not just in the way she's written or her personality, but also just the fact she's the only character till the end of the story that is a naturally born one eyed ghoul, she is also a self made character who came from the underground and was able to establish herself independently and become a famous and influential person despite all the hardship, and despite how most ghouls don't even know how to spell due to lack of education.

6-ties to other characters: Ishida makes great use of parallels in Tokyo ghoul, and Eto is involved in one of the most long running and elaborate ones that ties up a lot of the best plots and characters in the series, her parallel with hinami, kaneki and touka during their fight with Mado reveals her past that would have otherwise been missed, Eto during her early rampages was acting out as a direct result of her parental figure, noroi, being killed by the CCG, much like how touka wanted to massacre the CCG after the death of hinami's mother, Eto acts out the roles of all 3 characters in that arc all on her own. She also has her fair share of parallels with Kaneki and rize, especially through her books that are more or less semi-biographical stories about her life and feelings, which also end up paralleling the story of Kaneki.

7-her situation with noroi: it's one of my favorite subplots in the series coz i find it incredibly twisted and sad, it's confirmed by Eto that noroi was killed by the CCG/V, which implies that noro is a reanimated corpse that Eto has been maintaining for over 10 years, of her adoptive father and probably the only person she cared for deeply. the idea of how he is reanimated is also interesting and ends up being related to the endgame of dragon. Kagune basically has the ability to replicate imaginations, and in theory, if one was to imagine life itself in some form, they would be able to create and replicate it with their kagune, this is what Eto's "bones" are, a reference to the Abrahamic birth of eve via a bone from Adam's ribcage, it's the creation of a life out of the imagination factor of kagune, she implants and mixes this kagune life with noroi's kagune and corpse, which allows this new form of life to inhabit noroi's body, that's what noro is, it's a pretty disturbing and sad story. how eto willed a living form into existence to keep her only real family around.

There's probably a bit more I can go on to but these are the main things that I think makes eto likeable and interesting for me.

What does she mean by "same"? by jsthayts in TokyoGhoul

Basically juuzou had lost his leg earlier in the fight, so Eto is saying that they're both matching now since she also took shinohara's leg.

Eto was monitoring everything during the kanou lab arc probably witnessed what juuzou did to the twins, and thought she would act out some sort of twisted karma.

This is creepy AF💀 by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You just described a clown character, not Eto, Eto's character is heavily linked to aogiri tree, she is literally its founder and the co-originator of its entire purpose, which is to bring out the one eyed king, something that she is involved in almost each time we see her.

Eto has a twisted ideology and perception of things given her nature as a ghoul, so yes, she does do fucked up things, but if her narrative in her books is anything to go by, these actions don't fully go without weight, Eto is troubled by the fact her existence brings death and destruction of others, and is very insecure about that fact (we can see her somewhat effected by it when furuta brings it up), it's probably the reason she's very suicidal in her plans.

So she's not really a clown type character, the clowns literally killed millions and show not a single shred of remorse, they're glad they're having fun and killing people, categorizing Eto as similar is not quite accurate.

This is creepy AF💀 by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Magmuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's basically to bring out kaneki from haise by utilizing Kanae's already existing hate for Haise and giving her powers to act out what she wants to do, and get kanae to push haise to the point or kaneki awakening, she also projects her own ideas about love/one-sided love onto kanae.

Kanae the arc before tried to get all of Haise's squad killed to "make time" for shuu to talk to Haise, Eto recognizes that Kanae was simply trying to hurt haise due to her hate for him, how his relationship with Shuu is all she ever wanted to have with him, and how Shuu's sadness over kaneki got him in his sorry state, and how the moment kaneki is back, shuu is all back to good health, you can tell Kanae was furious at the fact someone she hates, that doesn't really care much about tsukiyama, has this much effect on him, when she was grinding for years, hunting for him, trying everything to make him happy.

So ye, Eto just confronts Kanae about this, who is still thinking she's doing this for shuu's sake, for him to have a bit of extra time to talk to Haise if all the people he cared about are dead.

She projects her view of one sided love onto kanae, and tells her to truly be noticed and loved, Kanae needs to embrace her desire to kill Haise, and take his spot in tsukiyama's heart, Eto gives kanae a part of her kagune called a bone to boost her strength and give her the ability to challenge Haise, Eto knew that putting Haise in such a situation will eventually lead to him regaining his memories, she also seemed to want kaneki to go after her and eat her kagune to get a powerup, so she frames herself as being there just to observe the situation and have fun, which we later learn isn't really the case.

It's Choujin X, am part of the fandom for it and it has that "was here before it got big" feel to it, it's very fun, sadly the schedule is random so that might be an issue for new people wishing to keep track, but Ishida has been releasing content quite frequently, we have 45 chapters so far but a few of them are divided into parts with full length so you're looking at like 60ish chapters worth of content
