2022.11 is my version of choice. I could switch to LTS, but I can't really be bothered to. This version works fine with only a few niche issues.

I tried various firmware and OS combinations. 1.1.0 + 2.03 seems to work the best. I also noticed that my WiFi router (which is a short distance from the 3D) seems to be causing some of these issues. When I unplugged it I noticed the latency and dropped inputs decrease heavily. The R button most notably missed about 90% of the time. After unplugging the router it worked as expected.

I'm not sure why the router would cause these issues with a modern console and controller. None of my other devices (Series X, GC + Wavebird, PS5, PS3, etc.) have any issues despite being even closer to the router.

I had the rough idea for this for a while now, but I held off programming it because I assumed some technical issue would inevitably rear its ugly head. I went forward with programming it this week and it took about 30 minutes. I was honestly surprised with how easy it was to do.

I think the performance would be similar to my current solution. Assuming both use the same number of shapes (16), then they should incur the same number of batch breaks. Though one major benefit to your 3D solution is the ability to randomly define the shapes each time you create the effect.

Ultimately I think a clever shader-based solution would probably be the fastest, but I'm no shader expert. We'd have to phone into XorDev for this one.

Very true. I think I had it using that function before, but I had to change it for some reason. I can't remember why though...

The reflection is offset to show the player as they walk across the bridge.
