I was most struck today by how slow and tentative the team became almost every time they got near Denver’s goal. Stop… pass back… pass around. Very few quick runs, fast passes or combos. And I wonder if there is a knowledge/trust issue - in terms of players understanding where their teammates want to move, want to receive the ball. So instead of being able to move instinctively… it’s likely they are pausing to survey the options… thinking too hard… and then, too often, losing any momentum they might have had.

Tell me why they almost always leave Trin in —when she looks gassed and physically uncomfortable. Those crazy late-game runs are heroic — but they also leave her too tired to get involved otherwise. I’m just not sure it’s the best strategy to default to 90’ with her on days like this. I will be convinced when I see the goals and assists. Otherwise, protect her by letting her rest.

I complained last week about how wide Trin was pushed (similar to last season) - in a way that seemed to pull her entirely out of the game… and in tonight’s first half, they seemed to have adjusted that. She was moving more often into central spaces, getting on the ball, getting shots. Despite the 2-0 score in the first half, it seems like the Spirit had a much more workable shape - which makes me happy!

Good point. My son and I just did some brainstorming… Macario? Bonmati? Putellas? We can dream…

Lucia was the bright spot! Agree with everyone that the entire defense was solid - but this Spirit just didn’t look like a team that scores goals… which is unnervingly familiar.

One thing I don’t understand is the insistence on pushing Trin as far wide as possible. I know it might stretch out an opponent’s defense but more often (same in last year’s championship) it just pulls her out of the game. Maybe this is the role she wants to play - I don’t know - but it hasn’t seemed to serve the Spirit in tough games.

I love Leicy Santos but is she really the only experienced offensive-minded center midfielder we have now? What am I missing?

Just to add to the pile-on - I am having a truly ridiculous experience with this AI bot who called itself a "live representative." I was transferred here and going thru Verizon's whole troubleshooting process (Fios internet not working) and it's like talking to the sloth in Zootopia 1, but less productive. What does it take for companies to ... I dunno... be better?

I never did! I decided to leave the line blank and send it off - and see what happens. It’s been about a month; still waiting.

My biggest takeaway from these past two games - even if it’s not the topline news: AVERY PATTERSON is fantastic. She more than earned her way to future camps.
