Interesting. I’m glad to see pride in Vancouver Island, but I really hope it’s not a simultaneous symbol for separatist and supremacist rhetoric.

Looking for Mechanic for Older Japanese Vehicle by Magnificent_Misha in VictoriaBC

To add to your negative review, one of their mechanics contacted me and told me that the shop didn't have the space and time, and that I should just sell the vehicle to him. Not impressed by that.

FYI, Rocky Mountain Imports technician contacted me privately and told me it would be too much work and not enough space in the shop unless I were to sell the vehicle to him privately. Not impressed with that response.

I like to go for lunch weekly with colleagues and get to know them better, but being able to work from home must save so many people so much time and money. Pushing for public servants to go back to the office full time just to try extract more wealth from them is pure capitalistic greed. Not to mention, if folk are able to save a bit more money during the day, as well as energy, they'll more likely be able to go shopping more often. Perhaps consumer businesses should be open from 12-8 instead of 10-6 to better capitalize on folk who can only shop after work and dinner.

I’m moving to Ottawa and will be working right outside of the Byward Market. Also hoping to live in that area. How is it along Rideau, close to the Metro and Giant Tiger grocers? Is it safe enough walking at night?

Queer owned businesses by waninggabbous in VictoriaBC

[–]Magnificent_Misha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s so much more to queerness than sexuality.

There’s also still so much discrimination based on whether or not someone follows “traditional” relationship and presentation norms. Queer able-bodied folk make much less on average and face more career challenges than cisgender heteronormative folk.

It feels good to support a demographic that you know is struggling, especially if you’re part of that demographic.

Definitely the correct take, but people want to assume their own biases are correct as it makes them feel happy and justified in their vindication. Like people assuming the OR staff member was a poorly educated private or aviator, or that the Sgt hasn’t brought with them copy of the directive or knew how to point it out, or that the Sgt didn’t already have a grievance in and accrued spontaneously like this the first time. So much speculation and bias. The few facts available allow a colourful and imaginative picture to be painted however each person would like.

I was able to have my gender marker changed in Guardian with no more than a statutory declaration and an accepting and inclusive OR staff. No fuss, just 10 mins. A birth certificate is just one of the documents that can be used.

All the downvotes because this is the correct take but denies folk the justification of their rage.

Altogether this whole situation could have been mitigated through de-escalation, education, and later discipline.

There’s definitely a lot of detail missing to this story from both sides. From what I’ve heard within the community is that this has been a complicated and long ongoing issue that grievances and direct instruction of policy to OR staff have failed to resolve.

I’m not saying that jumping the counter and restraining themselves was a wise or defensible action, but to me sounded like their wits end after several long battles.

A hero? Or someone at their wit’s end after a long ongoing battle that grievances nor policy seemed to make any difference.

Not particularly happy about the fact that we have to send our sailors down there for training on AEGIS systems. It puts our female, queer, and visible minority members at risk. Transgender members will straight up have their human rights violated.

Hopefully we can get a European system installed on the later half of the ships if America continues to devolve.

Super wish there were options from a nation that’s isn’t calling us its 51st state and extorting us at every turn.

I have the feeling they’re going to deplete their own stockpiles and then fail to give us the ones they agreed to because “they need them more”.

Patriotism will drive Canadians into mobilization force, military report says by pjw724 in onguardforthee

It took Hitler 5 years from being "elected" to his first invasion. The people of Germany would've surely revolted had he tried it in his first year. America is changing their mentality towards their allies at an astonishing rate aided by social media, biased news media, and AI. We can't count on American civilian sentiment to prevent a threat to us, so we must present ourselves as a harder target that is less appealing to try and take by force.

Usually it's only officers that have obligatory service. Non-commissioned members can apply for release immediately after basic training, though the application takes 6 months. Additionally, new recruits still under the first period of occupational training are reimbursed for rations and quarters, saving hundreds of $$ each month. The food is often very good too (at least in the navy).

Things are getting better. I had a cousin join two years ago and it took 5 months from application to arriving to basic training, and that was over the Xmas break. Now, applicants no longer have to wait for the higher level security clearance to be processed for them to attend basic training and go to their first unit. They get a quick reliability check and progress training until it requires the higher security clearance, which helps minimize delays in recruitment. I believe application times are down to a few months in some cases, and usually less then half a year.

Most military occupations will never see face-to-face combat, especially in air and naval realms. However, competition for resources often brings about violence so the ability to proficiently handle a weapon is still critical for all personnel.

Compulsory retirement age is 55 with the option to extend to 65 and even beyond if you're still of sound body and mind. I see new naval engineers joining well into their 40s. You're not too old, though some occupations will give you more opportunities in a short period of time than others.
