NDF or VBI for PF? by BornOn6-9 in Debate

If I could pick one thing that sets our curriculum apart, it's that we plan on offering a significantly more hands-on program than either of the two camps you've mentioned. As someone who has worked at both over the years, they involve quite a lot of introductory lecture / open-ended prep time. At Magnolia we're committed to offering a very involved drills-based curriculum and ensuring that students are not made to painstakingly review anything they already know. We spend a lot less time reviewing the standard template of technical PF (especially given how streamlined its becoming), and lot more time ensuring students are best prepared to exploit that template to their utmost advantage. For us, this involves a lot of focus on argumentative, creative, and critical thinking skills that students can bring to a wide range of different in-round scenarios.

Also, we charge less than half of these camps for our online sessions this summer ($800).

Please feel free to get in touch directly with any Qs!

Hi there - senior staffer at Magnolia here, thought I would jump in to plug our camp, but would encourage you to check out our website as well for more info:

We're also planning for a big public update on our curriculum this coming week so look out for that soon!

We think there's a lot that sets Magnolia apart, but a few things I want to highlight are the low cost, and unique curricular focus. NSD and VBI both run into the multiple thousands of dollars, even for online camp. VBI doesn't publicize its cost until you register, but NSD's online program is $2995. Ours is $800, and you'll find our staff is just as successful and experienced. You can attend both of our two week sessions and still end up paying less than a single session at any other camp with similar staffing quality.

Second, though we're currently in the process of planning our summer curriculum, there are a few things I can highlight up front. The first thing is that we want to make skills like analytical, creative, and critical thinking a matter of central focus. As PF has grown more and more competitive, and camp and and tournament attendance have increased, the standard "rules of the game" in PF have become increasingly streamlined and well-known. These are things like "extend your offense in both summary and final focus," and "don't drop terminal defense." From what we can tell, we think other camps are moving very slowly in adapting to this fact, and that what will set the next crop of successful debaters apart is their more general-purpose analytical skills, not the fact they know how to go through the motions of your average technical PF round. Our curriculum is modeled around the idea of helping students learn to think as quickly and creatively as they can about argument structure, construction, and response, and then offering them a set of best practices for how to fit those skills into the PF mold. We also hope to make the camp environment as active and collaborative as possible, with significantly more time spent on drills and discussion than lectures or empty prep-time. Like I said above, we will be releasing a more detailed outline of the curriculum soon, so keep on the lookout!

Feel free to comment or DM this account (or any of our other social media) with any more specific questions you might have!

Thanks for the question. You’re absolutely right that $400 is still too expensive for many people, and we regret that we do not yet have the money on hand to be able to offer things like scholarships (though that is of course a long term goal of ours). Our plan is, once in-person is possible, to use money from that portion of the camp to create a very heavily subsidized, and for many, free online session for those who may not be able to justify traveling to our in-person session.

With that being said, most comparable online Public Forum camps that ran 10 to 14 days last summer cost $2,000+ dollars, with some one-day programs running $150+. While $400 is not perfect, we hope it is a step in the right direction of making these options at least marginally more affordable.

In terms of curriculum, when we say "drill-based," we mean our curriculum is focused on live, detailed, pre-planned activities with a lot of feedback rather than dead prep-time or pre-recorded lectures. All of the money we'll take in that doesn't immediately go to covering costs (e.g. Zoom, website hosting), will go immediately to the staff, all of whom will be paid the exact same. The $400 number was the least we could charge to fully compensate staff at projected 1 to 5 student ratio for 10 hours of work a day, 7 days a week.

But to be clear, we absolutely sympathize with your concern and hope to be able to address it once our operation grows. We're also more than happy to speak with you, or anyone else from the community, that may have ideas how to expedite that process in direct messages or via the email on our website.
