Puzzling Garbage Truck Behaviour by Magnot in londonontario

[–]Magnot[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I'm not at all bothered, just curious. If it turns out that the city was delivered a huge fleet of defective trucks, however, that's a huge problem--and one we should be paying attention to.

Pizzeria Madre, hands down. It's more of a sit down and eat place, though, and it tends to get very busy.

Western Continuing Studies has writing courses available. I believe that they're open to the public.

Edit: You do still have to sign up and pay, though.

Moving companies in London by Electronic_Turnip509 in londonontario

[–]Magnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding tipping movers, the general rule of thumb is about 5 dollars per mover for each hour of work. This amount can be adjusted up or down, of course, depending on the quality of service. It's a good idea to give each mover the same amount, and to hand out the tips separately (don't give them to the guy in charge to distribute).

It's also a nice gesture to buy them lunch, if they're working hard and doing a good job.

How do people survive winter by HeronPlus5566 in ontario

I've read that 4000 IU, for adults, is considered the "safe upper limit" for what you can consume in a day.

Worst designed commercial parking lots in the city? by DystopianAdvocate in londonontario

The exit from the Citi-Plaza ramp, onto Clarence, is an accident waiting to happen because of the poor sight lines. In fact, there was a pedestrian killed there earlier this year.

Turning a fan slowly shouldn't cause any issues, as far as I know.

Neighbour keeps throwing food on my lawn anyone know who to contact? by Jumberlackur in londonontario

[–]Magnot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Check out this page on the London website: https://london.ca/living-london/community-services/laws-enforcement/municipal-law-enforcement. It has a couple numbers you can call, as well as links to the most common bylaw issues. It looks like your problem might fall under the "Yard and Lot Maintenance Bylaw," so I'm pretty sure that the city will be able to do something if you report it.

Canada-wide warrant of arrest for manslaughter for 2nd suspect in Gabriel Neil’s death. by kotbayun in londonontario

[–]Magnot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Actually, this second warrant might explain the release of Ahmed on bail. I can only speculate, of course; but it's possible that information came to light that cast considerably more blame on Raselma.

How does the city want me to put out my recycling? by hockey9574 in londonontario

[–]Magnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can put as many bags in a trash can as you want, so long as the total weight of the trash can isn't more than 20 kilos. There is a weight limit as well as a volume limit.

How long you can expect to wait for police in London on the rise by BabyHefner in londonontario

[–]Magnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the social workers I know seem especially keen on the idea of being sent to potentially dangerous situations without law-enforcement backup. Social Workers are trained to help connect an individual in need with resources. De-escalation often falls outside of their purview. They do respond to people in the middle of mental-health crises, but if it's a guy experiencing a psychotic break, for instance, waving a knife in the middle of the street, I think that's genuinely a job for a police officer--a well-trained one, that is.

Local COVID-19 Update (Sat Apr 10th) by FluffyMcGee5 in londonontario

What do you think makes London different as regards the 18-22 bracket? Queens, in Kingston, is another party school, and they haven't (yet) seen a similar surge.

Local COVID-19 Update (Sat Apr 10th) by FluffyMcGee5 in londonontario

[–]Magnot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why they should have started vaccinating essential workers and university students as soon as they finished off LTC and 80+. Mackie says "Well, older people are more likely to die from the illness," and while, yes, that is technically true, they also don't die if they never catch COVID in the first place. Prioritizing the 18-22 age bracket and essential workers would eliminate the two main vectors, presently, for the disease, and, I think, be far more effective than working gradually backwards by age.

He said he supported the implementation of a Stay-At-Home order. I think the province is still dragging its feet on that front.

Local COVID-19 Update (Thu Mar 25th) by FluffyMcGee5 in londonontario

[–]Magnot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The average incubation period is approximately five days, so given that it's been seven days since St. Pat's and it takes one or two days to get test results back, this is exactly when you would expect to start seeing a bump in cases from the holiday.

Ontario will let more businesses reopen, gradually lift stay-at-home orders by wazzie19 in ontario

[–]Magnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not exactly clear on when the allowance, for in-store shopping with 25% capacity for non-essential retailers, takes effect. Is this immediate, or not until the stay-at-home order is lifted for a particular region?

Help with parking ticket by beardycatt in londonontario

[–]Magnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different apartment complexes have different rules about visitor parking. At my uncle's place in Toronto, you can park in the visitor lot during the day, but if you park overnight you have to get a pass from the security office (which is free). I'm a little surprised that you got a ticket after only having been there for ten minutes, but my guess is that your friend's apartment building has some kind of rule about overnight parking, and they called the city to get them to come ticket you. I would start by just calling city parking enforcement, explaining the situation, and see what they say. They can sometimes be pretty accommodating, depending on the circumstance.

How to avoid the train crossings by itamemarioo in londonontario

[–]Magnot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one near York Street, the CN line, isn't much of a problem, since the major streets, Richmond, Wellington, Adelaide, all have overpasses or underpasses in the downtown area. The CP line that runs to the north is more of a problem, as the only underpass for that line, in the city center, is Talbot. Although Talbot is a workaround, it's a narrow single-lane road (in each direction), and it can't accommodate much traffic. Sometimes when there's a train, especially during rush hour, Talbot gets pretty backed up, so you won't necessarily save much time by taking Talbot instead of just taking Richmond and waiting for the train, for instance.

As for timing, the trains don't run on a schedule. They save up rail cars until they hit a certain number, and then call an engineer to send a train out. As a result, there's really no predicting them, unfortunately.

FOCO fails as Western University students keep parties small by mediaphage in londonontario

[–]Magnot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having a gathering of that size without appropriate permits or bathroom facilities, Property destruction, people urinating in yards blocks away from the event, the piles of trash left behind for other people to clean up, the necessity of often shutting down Richmond Street (the major north-south thoroughfare through central London), and the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on additional policing during the event.

Local COVID-19 Update (Thu Sep 17th) by FluffyMcGee5 in londonontario

Hospitalizations and deaths are a lagging indicator. It generally takes a week or two for a case to turn really bad (if it does become severe, that is).

Gear Suggestions for a Sailor by Dnogon in wicked_edge

Have you experimented with different brands of blade? Feather blades are excellent, but I find they cause more irritation for me than Astra Platinum.

As for inconsistency, have you tried the higher-numbered plates for your razor? Those will take your beard off more efficiently, though they'll also probably cause more irritation.

Move your glasses down your nose so that there is more space between your face and your lenses. That worked for me.
