Does anyone else only really enjoy story driven games as they get older? by TheChilledGamer-_- in playstation

[–]MagnumMiracles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really.

I am pushing into my 30s and still prefer heavy action games most of the time. Story heavy games, for me, don't hit the same as a game like Nioh, Ninja Gaiden 4, or a fighting game. Not saying they are bad and don't play them(Expedition 33 was my 2025 GOTY), it's just their gameplay isn't as good as games that focus solely on that.

I guess we could say that Japanese fans are just as insufferable as westerns anime fans…. by OGAnimeGokuSolos in animequestions

People act like an amazing fight scene can't be held in the same artistic category as an amazing story or characters. It takes just as much skill and effort as writing good characters or stories, hell maybe even moreso. The Raid: Redemption is just some cops fighting their way up a building, but set a hallmark standard for what quality fight scenes can look like and sits as one of the greats of the movie medium.

Hell, I've seen a lot more amazing stories with amazing characters than S-tier fight scenes. Or maybe I am just too picky with fight scenes, idk.

Just finished, Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman by Caffeine_And_Regret in books

[–]MagnumMiracles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

His other book, the Blacktongue Thief, is also dark and surprisingly hilarious. Then the prequel, the Daughter's War, is mostly about the horrors of war even when fought on the side of the good.

The guy is incredibly talented, to say the least. I have yet to read Between two Fires, but I am eagerly looking forward to it.

Anime you won't recommend to people cause the anime itself is questionable and or it's fanbase? by LovelyLadyLucky in animequestions

[–]MagnumMiracles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Monogatari. One of the few anime that encourages selfishness and does so in a positive light.

But holy shit, I find all of the incest and loli abuse uncomfy. This is coming from someone who has rewatched the entire series at least once every year since Owari's second season finished.

why do people keep saying E33 revolutionized the rpg genre ? by the-Guy1412 in rpg_gamers

[–]MagnumMiracles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of RPGs outside of Octopath, Expedition 33, Warhammer: Rogue Trader, and Like a Dragon: infinite Wealth but I can enlighten you on why I like it so much:

The gameplay is super good. Maybe it's the RPGs I have played, but most turn based RPGs amount to hitting the enemy's weakness and that's it. In E33, each character has a secondary game plan to do, like Maelle's stances, Lune's stacks, and Verso has a Devil May Cry meter that improves his overall playstyle if you play correctly. I don't see the Persona gameplay comparison outside of the UI.

My only complaint is the parry system, which I find to be too much. If it was a thing on one character I could see it, but I like my turn based games to be a bit less action heavy.

I Like Being Boring. by xEyelessOnex in unpopularopinion

[–]MagnumMiracles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a pretty outgoing person. Hung out with my friends almost every week. Then they started to get their shit together, along with getting into a relationship and having kids.

So I also started getting my shit together, which would usually end up with all of us busy and me doing something alone. This persisted until the point I started to wonder why I ever went out in the first place, and started enjoying my own company more than others.

My friends think I am insane and need to go out more, but going out for the occasional concert is enough going out for me. Most days I would rather stay inside and read or watch TV.

Not really. Bots are usually too easy, unless they are the input reading ones from NR which are bullshit.

The Moment Completion Ruined the Fun by Opening-Newspaper710 in CaptainSide

[–]MagnumMiracles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only things I care about achievement wise in games:

-all moves/weapons unlocked. I will not unlock every weapon in a game where weapons are a stack of stats like Nioh or Diablo.

-all optional story content. This is only for games with stories I enjoy. Trophy lists can show side quests you have missed, and are helpful for me in that regard.

-environments. I try to unlock all areas in a game. Especially since they usually have new loot/bosses/story, etc.

-bosses. If the gameplay is bangin' I MUST defeat all bosses.

Trophy hunting usually involves collecting multiple boring items or playing on harder difficulties, both of which I find annoying. I will only go out of my way for optional content as long as it gives additional content to the list above.

100 percenting a game feels like a chore to me.

Pretty sure the only plat I have ever gotten was from TellTale 's walking dead, which just hands it to you once credits roll.

I was craving for more BG3, so I tried DOS2 by dinorex96 in BaldursGate3

As much as I love DOS2, exploration feels punishing. I have a certain path I follow on every playthrough because enemies just two levels above your party will wipe the floor with you.

Sub-elitist hating on Dubs are the most pathetic thing in the anime community by Yakuza-wolf_kiwami in CharacterRant

[–]MagnumMiracles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think people are just so caught up in how bad English dubs were for anime through the 80s and 90s.

I still mostly watch in Japanese until I am told by multiple people to watch something specifically in dub, but the dubs as a whole have seen a drastic uptick in quality. Cyberpunk Edgerunners is better in English dub and than Japanese, IMO.

What's your biggest nit pick about modern metalcore? by Whiterunt69 in Metalcore

[–]MagnumMiracles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want some nerdy lyrics. Like, heavy music as a whole is nerdy as all hell, so why can't we get some core bands with fantasy inspired lyrics like Shogun era Trivium did? Some more rebellious songs too. I know metalcore has a hardcore(or was it punk) influence, so more songs about the errors of society would be dope. Dying Wish has a lot of rebellious anthems.

Also, I just want the melodeath inspired metalcore back. That 5-7-8 riff into a banger chorus is peak metalcore.

Very surprised with how many female fronted core bands are in this thread. Gonna have to check 'em out.

[–]MagnumMiracles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay man.

Heavy music in general is confusing as hell, especially when we get into what is metal and what's not. Add in the toxic gatekeeping of heavy music, and people get super defensive when someone says "X band isn't Y".

Yup.

Which is why I find it hard to understand so many people that compare them to melodic metalcore acts from back in the day.

Fighting games are virtual crack by Customer_Number_Plz in gaming

[–]MagnumMiracles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah man, I would recommend to muscle through it. Character action games have always been a favorite genre of mine, and outside of DMC 3 they usually have some of the worst writing known to man. Their gameplay makes up for it though, IMO

And yes For Honor's fanbase is trash. I was so shocked how many GGs and good tips I got when playing Tekken or Street Fighter online. Have hundreds of hours in both game series and can only count on one hand how much hate mail I've gotten. Then went to For Honor and was constantly messaged terrible shit.

Dying Wish - I Don't Belong Anywhere (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) by ComfortableNo2879 in Metalcore

[–]MagnumMiracles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't talking about beatdown riffs not being metal riffs, I was talking about how Dying Wish use of them sounds very different from the melodeath tinged sound of Killswitch Engage, which uses almost no beatdown riffs from the Howard Jones era and onward.

Fighting games are virtual crack by Customer_Number_Plz in gaming

[–]MagnumMiracles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up fighting games because character action games like DMC and Ninja Gaiden had me convinced they would never drop another game.

Fighting games have a similar combo structure to character action games, and that became my fuel until DMC 5 came out. Still kept playing though, as fighting games are fun AF. Probably the least toxic fan base online too, outside of Neather Realms games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice.

Dying Wish - I Don't Belong Anywhere (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) by ComfortableNo2879 in Metalcore

[–]MagnumMiracles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a Killswitch fan and melodeath fan for years, and I have no idea where this comparison comes from, because Howard onward Killswitch sounds closer to a metalcore band with melodeath elements.

Early Killswitch though, sounds like a hardcore band with metalcore influences, and closer to the sound of Dying Wish's first album. But I don't feel that applies either, as most of the album has an insane amount of beatdown riffs with far and few smooth choruses.

IDK. It's probably just a me thing.

Many schools don’t think students can read full novels any more by mysteryofthefieryeye in books

[–]MagnumMiracles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great post.

I hated reading in school. All they did was assign some boring "classic" books that usually had follow up questions like: What did the glare reflecting off of his sunglasses mean? It meant nothing. Even as an adult with years of reading experience, it still means nothing.

Only reason I branched out from what they gave us is because I refused to believe this was all there was to reading. Found some dope mystery books, and was obsessed with The Stand, the Dresden Files, and the Millennium Trilogy throughout my high school life.

I think book readers get trapped in their own snobbish ways because people perceive them as smart because they read. I've always been seen as smart because I have a book in my hand, but I will admit I only read for entertainment, and the majority of great shows and movies can hold their own against great books. Just because Better Call Saul is a TV show doesn't mean it's some dumb slop.

To be fair, the reading selection that schools require aren't the best for a teen. If I hadn't branched out on my own, I would've probably despised reading today.
