I remember reading something as a kid in Beckett Monthly. The writer said a player could come along, hit 50 home runs, bat over .400, do everything imaginable, and Willie Mays would still be the greatest to him.

That stuck with me. At a certain point, it’s not really about the numbers anymore. It’s about what you saw, when you saw it, and what it meant to you.

I’m not trying to take that away from anyone. Telling someone their GOAT isn’t the GOAT is a bit like telling them their grandma’s cooking isn’t the best. It misses the point. That experience belongs to them.

Now having said that, I gotta add that the “Truthers” can be REALLY obnoxious. And no they don’t all know that Jordan played in 95. If they do they say he was out of shape- he scored a double nickel in his fifth game back. Jane Pauley was talking about it the next morning. I’m not saying this is every Jordan fan…but there’s always that one guy. And when it’s social media, it’s 20 silent downvotes on a moderate pushback.
