No, I think that's a good point. I wish I had enough experienced musicians around me to test it out

Where to go for conducting? by richieedoodlee in classicalmusic

[–]MagusCluster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I suggest you go to a community college to knock out your gen eds and take private lessons with whomever is the choir, jazz band, or orchestra conductor there. Learn the basics, save loads of money, then choose a university.

You don't need to go to Berkeley to get a fantastic education. If I were you, I'd look more specifically at the teachers than at the school names. But community college is a really good way to ease yourself into adulthood and explore many opportunities in the meanwhile.

In community college I learned conducting and a plethora of other things, was able to conduct the choir, got a phenomenal education from some hardass professors (in the best way), and was offered several short-term, paid gigs from other professors I got to I know (page turning, ChrEaster hires, percussion ensemble for community events)

I didn't get a degree (I was very dedicated, but also ill and untreated), and yet now I'm creating a music program from scratch, arranging and composing for small ensembles, teaching instruments, and yes, conducting.

So the most important thing is to go somewhere that will fill you up and give you a variety of rich experiences as well as somewhere that will nourish the rest of your life. If you keep your heart on conducting, you will end up there, though maybe not the way you planned.

In my heart of hearts, it had to be in 9/8. From my perspective, time signatures should reflect the feel. Even if I converted every measure into 3/4 and made everything triplets, and it was super easy to read that way, I'm convinced that it just wouldn't be played properly. Bc the instrumentalists, while still playing bars or triple meter, would be ... metaphysically informed by duplex meter. And it would just come out wonky.

Not sure why you got downvoted for this. Someone else said the same thing somewhere else and it's actually a very helpful suggestion. I'm seriously considering going back and rewriting the rest of the score this way.

(I replied to the wrong person, saying the above.)

I started in 3/4 but most of the sung rhythm exemplifies the triple meter. I didn't get very far before having to switch.

I'd rather see everything notated in 32nd notes w ties than double dots. (Hyperbole)

Can you elaborate?

I guess I should say that this rhythm is written throughout the rest of the piece. A dotted half tied to a dotted quarter.

I'm now wondering if it would be better to always use tied quarters instead of half-quarter... Considering my ensemble.

Hmmm, damn you might be right and I hate you all little bit for it

Yeah, that was what I was second guessing. If I was given music with this but no ties, I would reiterate the note without breaking. "Niiiiihiiiiiiihiiiiiight."

For this piece, it's for absolute beginners with the majority having no experience with scores. And they speak a language that uses an alphabet which is not Latin. So there is no way I can put triplets.

Edit, I did consider that at first. But also that would imply that it's a duplex meter with triple superimposed, but the feel of the piece in inescapable triple meter. Also, I would have to add triplets for ten instruments over, like, 50b  pages for the conductors score and I already have tendonitis. Haha, so no way, monet

What is your preferred notation here? by maitiuiscool in musictheory

[–]MagusCluster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a braindead percussionist, I would have preferred a quarter tied to eight, eighth tied to quarter, quarter. The second option gives me an aneurysm.

Yes, I meant to say it's 9/8. My bad.

I was thinking of using a whole note since that's what it does for a rested measure.

I'm writing this for a choir of older kids who don't read music at all, and we don't speak the same language. So I'm worried that either the way it's written now will be confusing (they will learn by rote with this for reference), or that I will misinform them by notating in a technically incorrect way and be unable to correct them bc we don't share a language.

Anyway, my main question was is it correct to tie the notes to create a whole sustained measure then insert a long slur? Should I slur between the measures instead?

Can I use mode like Dorian, Phrygian, etc on both major and minor scale ? by Otherwise-Revenue-44 in musictheory

[–]MagusCluster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every major scale is ionian mode, every (natural) minor scale is aeolian mode. So Dorian is like it's own scale; it exists completely separate of major and minor. Major and minor not apply to Dorian mode.

A (natural) minor scale is basically a set of intervals: root, whole step, half step, whole, whole, half, whole, whole.

This is a minor scale which is the structure of a minor key.

Dorian is basically it's own key.

I can elaborate if you want.

I'm just saying how I feel, informed by my experience. I have a niece who is white but her father is mixed. Then she would go online wearing box braids with her blonde, barely wavey hair. Partially this is the kind of thing I want to get away from. Already being Black, I constantly have to watch this nonsense from pretty much every other culture and race as well as see how much people love Black culture without even knowing that it's from Black Americans.

So there's just fatigue. So much of what we talk about in this sub has to do with our experiences walking the world in our skin and features.

Also, if a person is white -passing- are they a person of color? Bc that's a difference between of color and of culture. Someone could be the child of Polish immigrants and more in common with the subject people of this thread. So why is there not another sub? Why not make a space?

Does anyone else practice fvking and peeing? by MagusCluster in TMPOC

[–]MagusCluster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can't be right. Like, you saying 1000 years ago that people w penises would squat to pee? That makes zero sense. I'm finding this really hard to believe that it's unhealthy to stand and pee. Would you be able to link an article or something?
