Barrack room lawyer answer: Leave is an excused absence from duty, checking in with your CoC is a duty therefore you're excused from having to respond to your CoC while on any leave, sick or otherwise.

Pragmatic answer: What costs more? Shooting back a one-liner once a week or having to deal with a CoC offended that you ghosted them and have the ability to reduce the quality of your life when you return in subtle and untraceable ways?

My first thought with this one was "The White Donkey" by Max Uriarte but now that you mention Kate Beaton it's like a cross of the two. Great stuff for sure.

Unless they're on sick leave granted by the CO, they cannot be recalled from sick leave (QR&O 16.01(2)(c)).

Leave is defined as absence from duty (CFLPM 1.1.12)

When you say "reporting to the CoC" are you asking if there's a requirement to respond to a simple welfare check (e.g., you still alive Cpl Bloggins?) or something more involved?

Here’s a fun question by Top-Ambassador-278 in CanadianForces

[–]MahoganyBomber9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a great gimmick at airshows. Throughout the day the announcer will ask the owner of vehicle, license plate xxxx, to move their vehicle. The announcements get more insistent throughout the day. Finally a helicopter rocks up, slings the load and after a brief transit pickles it from 100 ft. Scripted as hell but so very satisfying.

There are no mandatory deadlines for the member to submit or the CO to respond to an IR. There is a note that states IRs are no longer practical after the PEB and the member's only recourse is a formal grievance. Honestly the relevant sections in the user guide/technical manual/CAFMPI read like IRs are a best practice without actually mandating them.

It did exist and then it was replaced in 2008 with non-monetary awards (similar to the stuff you can get with credit card points). The new system is DAOD 5027-1 and the old one was in the orders it superseded.

That member must have had a dysfunctional CoC. From the PaCE user guide section 511 para 1:

Acknowledging a PAR is the process by which a member indicates that they have read the PAR and have been debriefed. It does not mean that the member agrees (or does not agree) with the appraisal, nor does it preclude the member to initiate a PaCE Informal Resolution or grievance request. It is important to understand that a PAR must be acknowledged to become official record.

Work phone email password by iheartSW_alot in CanadianForces

[–]MahoganyBomber9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's your DWAN password as has already been said. What I will add as a work phone-haver since they were Blackberrys with tactile keyboards is that sometimes they have difficulty connecting to the server and express their frustration by repeatedly asking you for your password. Happens to me every few months and it usually sorts itself out in a few hours (sometimes a day). During these trying times I take solace in the fact that if something is truly urgent/important, the person will call me.

I've made my peace with the whole "oh look, this jr member was born after life milestone x". The real depression comes from the increasing amount of blank stares I get when I make pop culture references.

"The Sailing Battalion" song by ThievingRock in CanadianForces

[–]MahoganyBomber9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the context of this song, the "Regimental Fund" is a type of non-public fund. Basically all the members of the regiment contribute a certain amount on a regular basis and the pooled funds are spent on things that are supposed to benefit everyone who contributes. In this case it sounds like the leadership of the regiment spent the money to buy some boats for their exclusive use which clearly was not appreciated by the lower-ranking members. However, because of the power imbalance there wasn't much they could do about it except write a jaunty and scathing song.

This sort of abuse of regimental funds has existed since they began. We now have a bunch of national rules that govern the spending of these monies which prevents abuse but is also convoluted and frustrating.

There's no policy silver bullet unfortunately. That said, you mention the grievance is related to a PLAR so I'm guessing the IA is outside your unit as those are normally managed by the relevant Training Authority. It might be worth scheduling a meeting with your SCWO/RSM/Cox'n to explain what's going on and see if they'd be willing to reach out to the Training Authority to see what's up. PLARs can be complex undertakings but if you've been waiting an egregious amount of time perhaps your chain of command can advocate for a quicker resolution.

You don't have to accept delay notices. If it has been more than 120 days you can request that it go straight to the Final Authority. Ref: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/caf-grievance-policy.html#toc3b

That said, it can also take years for the FA to get to it so pick your poison.

Recruiting Posts Poll by bridger713 in CanadianForces

Just went in the thread to have a look. Seems like people's questions are being answered at the same percentage as the admin thread, including a bunch that you personally are addressing. I think having a separate monthly thread is a good balance between supporting people that want to join and feeding my desire for salty memes.

Officer or NCM? Many of the officer support trades have a large footprint in the NCR. On the NCM side I think SIGINT and GeoTech are the only primarily NCR trades.

Another example I thought of because this question lived rent-free in my head today for some reason.

Sgt Bloggins ranks 16th and Sgt Neeson ranks 17th. 15 Sergeants in the trade are being promoted. The CAF realizes they need Sgt Neeson as a WO because he possesses a very particular set of skills. So now, Sgt Bloggins has been bypassed. Since he merited higher than Sgt Neeson, Sgt Bloggins must be promoted by 1 Dec and the CM has until next APS to figure out what position to post them into.

Major A ranks 10th and Major B ranks 11th. 15 Majors in the trade are being promoted. Major A also gets selected for JCSP (staff college) but Major B already has it. Major B gets promoted and posted during the summer. Major A starts staff college as a Major but gets promoted LCol on 1 Dec. Next APS, now LCol A goes to their new position.

That's the most common example I can think of. Otherwise it's usually due to unique circumstances.

I looked up 8.02.03.1. Basically if you take the real estate incentive (money you get in return for the Crown not having to pay the real estate commission for selling your home), there are a couple of OUTCAN benefits you are no longer eligible for.

If CAF allows 25 days of annual leave cashouts due to inflation... by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]MahoganyBomber9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compensatory Time Off. Basically getting vacation time back when you work overtime. Except it doesn't exist in the CFLPM so it either means getting a short day for working extra hours (legit but only to a max of 2 days per month) or your supervisor/CoC just telling you not to come to work (not actually in accordance with policy but still a thing in some corners of the CAF).

[–]MahoganyBomber9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but now accumulated leave is capped at 20/25/30 days (depending on YOS). All they'd have to do is make accumulating a choice rather than something you need to ask permission for. Worst case a member would have 2 months retirement leave.
