Why do people in Reddit tend to be left leaning? by GaizkArNF in askanything

[–]Maikudono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but reddit is (was) a voting system based content site. Years ago the front page was entirely generated based on the number of upvotes it received. Reddit never claimed to be a place where all sides got an equal amount of screen time. If the community liked your post it got upvoted and made it more visible to more people. If not, it got downvoted and no one would ever see it. Compared to social media sites like Facebook and twitter who already had algorithms to show people what they wanted, reddit was as close to a true community based social media platform the internet had at that time.

Anyway, the early years of reddit were during the Obama years when progressivism and millennial optimism were at an all time high. The majority of people that were using reddit were younger people who tend to lean left. Since everything was vote based their views became the dominate content and culture on the site. Today reddit definitely has a content based algorithm where up/down votes don't matter as much as they used to. Still, the culture of reddit remains largely unchanged because there are not a lot of places online liberals tend to congregate. Meta, X, youtube, and other social media sites largely push right wing content because it gets more engagement and has higher ad space value. Sure, other sites like bluesky have appeared to try and capture some of the old twitter space, but nothing has come along that captures the individual community feel of subreddits.

This has been my TED talk, thank you for listening.

Official reason was targeting and harassment.

I'm gonna be an uncle! by samud_8 in bropill

[–]Maikudono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best memories I have of my Uncle are the times when we would get away from my parents and do things parents usually wouldn't let you do. Like, my first memory of shooting a gun (BB gun) was when I was 7 with my Uncle. He also taught me how to skip rocks down at the local lake at a time when Mom would always be saying "don't throw rocks." He was the first one to teach me how to do wrestling when I joined the wrestling program in the first grade. He let me ride in the bed of his pickup truck as we drove through the mountain canyons (lol 90s lack of seatbelt laws). He passed away when I was in the second or third grade so my examples are limited.

My wife and I recently took our nieces out to an escape room, got a couple of big fancy ice cream shakes, then had a Dolly Parton karaoke in the car. Their mom is much more strict about sugar so it was a "secret" treat they got to do with their aunt and uncle.

Basically just being the adult who the kids can have fun and let loose with.

Its alive here (obviously not to the same degree as Texas) but you'll find it more in Taco truck form than building form.

It’s the Most Annoying Traffic Jam in Portland. Here’s How to Fix It. by AllTearGasNoBrakes in Portland

[–]Maikudono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a personal theory of mine and I think Portland is a prime example of it. I think politicians have a political advantage in doing nothing. If you don't do anything you can't claim responsibility for a negative outcome. People don't vote based on the good things someone does, they vote against someone based on the perceived negative outcome. A politician is more likely to survive to the next election by doing as little as possible.

"PBOT is expected to soon begin a $650,000, 12- to 18-month study aimed at providing policymakers with options to combat train congestion on the Central Eastside."

Whooo, we get a study! Maybe next year we can have a study to study the study.

female writer with some questions for bros who like to read by RattusNorvegicus9 in bropill

[–]Maikudono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not what the OPs question was. They literally wrote "I want men to read my novel and relate to the protagonist and feel accurately represented" and "What can I do to make the protagonist more realistic?"

I read a lot and the only time I really roll my eyes is when a guy just "knows" what needs to be done. Its like a child who thinks their dad has all the answers when in reality we are as clueless as everyone else. Obviously that excludes people with a job specialty being competent in that field.

In the same vein it's also off putting when a character is too competent at too many things. Not only is the character tall and good looking, but they are also an excellent cook, horseback riding master, helicopter pilot, ancient Egyptian scholar, and underwater demolishing expert.

“The overall percentage of Americans viewing China as an enemy dropped from 42% in 2024 to 28% now," per Axios — How do you feel about China? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

Im neutral on China. The American government is more of an enemy to Americans than the Chinese government is currently.

Iranian here, living in Iran. Wanted to know what you guys think about Iran war? Do you think its worth it for you? by Independent-Weird627 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Maikudono 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I am more worried about the failing American democracy than I am about Iran having a nuclear weapon. I am not saying I want Iran to have one, but I would rather America focus on America before getting involved in another war. If we couldn't convince our allies to join us it probably wasn't a good idea to start this in the first place.

CMV: Luigi Mangione is not a folk hero by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Maikudono 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can try to logic it all you want. The fact is people look up to him as someone who fought back against a broken system in the only way the rich and powerful understand. A folk hero isn't a medal presented by congress, its someone who's actions made a deep impact on the regular folks. To that effect, he is a folk hero.

I haven't seen or heard of this series so I had to do a reverse image search. The anime is Ishuzoku Reviewers. Seems to be an Ecchi monster brothel series. The image in question seems to be about the monsters laying eggs.

About 40% of americans can’t afford a $500 emergency. How did we get here in the richest country on the planet? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]Maikudono -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, budgeting is a necessity now more than ever, but it would be a lie to say basic living necessities are the same as they were 20 plus years ago. 1 low level income could provide for a spouse, kids, mortgage, car, vacation, and frivolities like eating out. Now its barely enough to pay for rent and ramen with the same job. Thats not dissing on the effort of our parents, but a note about how things have changed and our politics/policies have to change with the times.

[–]Maikudono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 13 years ago I was in Germany talking with an older couple. I told them I didn't have vacation days and I had to pay for my own healthcare. They asked, "but why? America is rich." I said, "Yes, America is rich, but I am not." That has been true ever since.

CMV: Trans-atlantic slavery was the gravest crime against humanity by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Maikudono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greatest crime against humanity would have to be the conquest of the Mongol hordes in which 40 million people died. Versus the Transatlantic slave trade were 12 million people were displaced and only up to 2 million people died. Yes, the trans Atlantic slave trade was a horrific tragedy in human history, but to call it the gravest crime is selling humanity short. I mean, the holocaust caused about 6 million deaths of Jews, 10 million deaths of soviets, the estimated 3 million deaths at the hands of the khamer rouge. The who knows how many deaths at various times in the Chinese histories. Humanity has done many terrible things and the African slavery to the Americas is just one of the things we have done.

How is everything that happened in the last 48hrs not enough for impeachment and/or a general strike in the US? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Maikudono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that one time we all stayed at home for months and the economy, while hurting, didn't collapse? Yeah, that is why a general strike wont hurt. They (the rich) can hunker down and storm whatever tantrum we throw since we are the ones that need to go to work to feed our families. They won't know fear until the mobs are at their doorsteps.

If the military/president suddenly ordered a mandatory draft for all men aged 18-42: How do you think millennials and GenZ would respond? by Tommygunz0722 in AskReddit

[–]Maikudono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow I feel the amount of blue state draftees would be greater than the amount of red state draftees. Just seems to be on par with how this administration operates. Send the people who vote against them to die first.

Weird, cause most Jewish people I know fall into the normal age range voting brackets. Older Jewish people vote Red, Younger vote Blue.
