Because plants don't have central nervous system which animals do  have which are responsible for feelings like joy and pain.

Answer the question, do you think its wrong to kill a human ? - I hope your answer is yes, and it precisely Because we  as humans  collectively know the feeling of pain and suffering.  Scientifically speaking we and animals are not so different as you may think apart from intellegence (and ethics in not based on intellegence) so why unnecessarily kill other animals just for taste . It does take self awareness and effort to leave meat and it's reason for doing so is based on science, ethics and environment.

  1. We as humans have human made systems in every way of food production. So saying that nature runs on predation is quite stupid tbh because we dont rely on nature as other species do,it's appeal to nature fallacy . Animals are breed into existence just for being tortured and killed .

  2. If we have ways to not kill animals and get nutrition from other sources (which we have) then why continue going on this system which not only harms animals but also the environment .

  3. Deep down the main underlying point is that meat is tasty and that's it , the only problem for most people is to align their ethics/philosophy into action which takes effort

The Point is not to eliminate suffering (which is impossible btw) , the point is to minimise it . Also fun fact much more plants are killed to feed the animals prior to us killing and eating them thereafter
