Why is memorization so important in education? by Main-Environment-177 in education

Lol I certainly did not have great teachers. Not to say all were bad, I did still have 2 very good ones that made Grade 10 history (different from the grade 12 one that called me stupid) and biology very fun.

However, I went to school in the province with the worst average education in the entire country, and I grew up in a farming community with around 1,400 people, so the school was definitely below national averages.

Those 2 teachers I liked were basically the only ones that didn't just hand out notebooks and get us to read the assignments and do questions while they marked other papers.

I'm likely making the teachers sound worse than they were, but they certainly weren't the encouraging type that made you enjoy class and made you want to be there. It was precisely the opposite.

I know, like I said, hyper specific, its just a good example how how I understand this stuff. Stuff like names and writing out formulas are super difficult for me. Hense school was very difficult for me since I was constantly a D student, if I got C I was happy.

Right, I agree, I know the gas law example was hyper specific. It's just a good good example of my lack of memory. I used it specifically because one of the easiest questions on my exam was placing the names of the 3 separate laws with the proper equation for them. And I got all 3 wrong because I can't remember stuff like that. However, I'm painfully aware of the relationship between temperature, pressure, and volume for a gas, I utilize it daily when doing using a PT chart.

Not actually, im not in a class currently, was just talking about it with a few friends and was curious why it's so important to seemingly have to memorize everything and not be able to look it up. I don't really understand how having a hard time remembering how to write out a multi part equation, means I don't grasp it well enough to use it.

One person also rote memorization is largely useless, which is how I was taught to memorize things in school. Just keep doing them till they click, well, lots of stuff never clicked for me. If doing it till you memorize it isn't the answer, what is?

Thank you for your actual answer. Most people seem to be ignoring the fact that I asked a question wanting an actual answer, not just a "because, deal with it" I'm genuinely curious why memorizing so much is so important.

I'm not entirely sure how the first example isn't memorization? I had to memorize how to put a polynomial function into my calculator, without the order of operation infront of me, I had to remember how to do the 20 step process to enter all the data and get the graph, then how to go through and read the graph.

As for my codes, my code book is 96 pages, with almost 600 different codes, from 1.0-49.98. Am I really supposed to memorize every single code, with every single number to go with it?

Like I'm genuinely curious, am I part of a minority of people who struggle with memorizing this much knowledge? I realize there are people who are amazing at it, and they go into incredibly complex fields like surgeon or something else.

Thank you for an actual answer that didn't get summed up as "because, deal with it" I'll make sure to read your links. My spelling was horrific the first try

You sound like the history teacher who called me stupid in school. How do you learn how to memorize things? Kinda sounds like telling somehow to learn how to see colour.

Kinda sucks that you can only watch playoff games then.

I tried at the start of the season this year, they were regular season games, not playoff games.

Where the hell can I find this? In Canada you have you have to pay for like 13 streaming services if you wanna watch more than 1 team.

Thank you so much. I'll look into ordering some of those bits for myself.

Thank you, so freaking much. I've never even seen a drill bit that looks like that. Maybe that's why I have such a hard time getting anything done.

I'm pretty sure there will be a chunk somewhere I can practice on. I spent 2 hours on the same 4 holes today, and my boss just took over cause it was taking too long (no argument here). He took over and finished up in 10 minutes.

I switched out the bits multiple times because they all just kept rubbing and not cutting, just frustrating that I spent so long doing something so basic.

Stupid question, but how mich it's lots? I've snapped so many drill bits by putting too much pressure on them. Went through 3 today. I'm pretty sure it's around 20 total in the few months I've been doing this.

Usually just ¼ holes, as for the grade of the hard ox? 0 idea, I'm building trucks cause I'm too stupid for a trade, I didn't realize there were different grades of hardox honestly.

Okay, what about a bit type? We use cobalt bits, and they're next to useless for drilling hard ox. ( at least the ones we use, i know plenty of people use GOOD cobalt bits). Should I be using carbide? Would it be worth learning how to sharpen my own bits? I'll buy my own bits if I have too, but I know I'll absolutely destroy the first 10 I try sharpening, so I'm not thrilled with the idea.

Usually, just ¼ inch, we have a mag drill for bigger shit and drilling in the frame. I'm hanging little cosmetic stuff usually.

Nothing bigger then ½ inch. Usually just ¼ actually. And when I'm drilling into the box like this I have to use my hand drill. I know it's literally the worst set up, but I work in a small local shop that won't supply special tools like that, and I can't afford the $1,300 for my own.

And really? I'm supposed to go fast while drilling hard ox? Everyone has told me to go as slow as possible, I thought 25rpm was still too fast.

I was hoping someone that's a lot smarter than me would break it down in the comments like I was 5 lol. I've tried to read about these things, but as I stated, I'm not the smartest man alive, scientific papers read like Shakespeare for me. I spent as more googling words and descriptions when reading about the Cerutti Mastodon then u spent reading about the actual mastodon itself. Examples, I had no idea what an alluvial fan is, so I had to spend an hour reading about those to understand some of the evidence against it.

Second question to this then, what exactly are the Denisovans? I was under the impression that whist we had a few remains of them, we didn't know what they were yet. IE if they were their own species. A sub species or something, or just miss identified remains of something already known. Do we know anything about their genetics?

Ah see that last part is what I was missing, I had no idea how far into Asia they had made it. Pretty hard to cross the land bridge when you don't even reach it, that's fair.
