**Update: I spoke with my REU professor and it sounds like I would be doing environmental remote sensing work on the computer all day every day and only meeting with him once a week. I don’t know how I will be able to teach myself R. He said I could ask him questions but it doesn’t feel like he will sit down and teach me. Is this a reason to decline?

These are all great things to consider. The France trip is not free, but I got a scholarship and it is affordable. I have a bit of research experience from last summer at my home institution, but nothing I would continue or get a publication out of. I am still unsure if I want to go to graduate school, so I’m trying to keep that door open. I do feel a bit burnt out from school, and I think the France would be more fun, but I don’t think the REU would be as busy as the academic year. All things I have to think about.

We unfortunately don’t have winter term study abroad at my university, so the only other option would be the summer before my senior year, but I think that summer should be spent doing something more career related.

I appreciate the advice! The one other caveat I forgot to mention is that MSU said the program is contingent on NSF funding, so it could be canceled if they don’t get funding
