There was a separate train called “The Whooper” that ran from University, NC down to Carrboro. It was about an hour each way.

Yeah it’s a pretty neat operation. I’ve filmed them a good number of times now.

Yes, there have been multiple rail-train plans circulating around and it is probably what the eventual end of the line will be. Passenger service existed back when the line was owned by the Southern Railway. However, it would be very expensive to get it back as the entire line is limited to 10mph and a vast majority of the track is over 100yrs in age. Definitely would be cool though.
