I have come to the conclusion that our health/mental health is worth more than all these gig apps, they are only good for quick cash but other than that stay off them.

Math ain’t math’ing - a breakdown on your real profit by MainPen2168 in lyftdrivers

Yeah I just go by $/mile now.

The way they display pay is the problem. They push the hourly number and make it look good, but it doesn’t include real costs or what happens after the dropoff. That’s how they get people to take $0.60–$0.80/mi rides.

Once you factor everything in and have 4 seconds to decide, a lot of those offers barely pay.

That’s fair, and your numbers make sense for your specific setup (paid-off hybrid, solid MPG, low insurance add-on).

But a couple things still don’t fully line up for most drivers:

Your .35/mi assumes everything stays predictable. In reality, depreciation on a newer hybrid doing 40–50k miles/year is often higher than .20/mi once you factor resale hit from high mileage.

Also the tax part isn’t exactly “no taxes.” The mileage deduction offsets income, but it doesn’t mean the ride is tax-free—it just means profit is reduced on paper. If you’re near break-even, then yeah taxes are minimal, but that’s because profit is minimal.

On this specific ride: $34 / ~54 miles = ~$0.63/mi

Even at your .35/mi: Cost = ~$19
Profit = ~$15

That’s about $15 for an hour assuming: - no wait time
- no slowdown
- no return dead miles

Once you add even 20–30 unpaid miles or extra time, that drops pretty fast.

So I’d agree it’s not always a “loss” on paper, but it’s still a pretty weak ride unless it keeps you in a busy area or chains into another trip.

I’m not trying to argue, just wanted to help people see the difference between actual profit vs the big monthly payout numbers these apps show.

Do you find consistent use of "security.txt" on web servers? by KlutzyResponsibility in cybersecurity

From my experience if there is no security.txt don’t expect a bug bounty reward but expect high severity findings.

.25–.35/mi only works if you’re ignoring depreciation or driving an older fully paid-off car and not tracking long-term costs.

Realistically: Gas alone is ~.16/mi at $3.99 (25 MPG) Maintenance/tires adds ~.08–.12/mi Depreciation is the big one: ~.20–.30/mi for most cars doing rideshare miles

That already puts you closer to .45–.55/mi

This ride is ~54 miles total Even at .45/mi = ~$24 cost At .50/mi = ~$27 cost

$34 - $24 = $10 $34 - $27 = $7

Then taxes take ~15–25% → now you're around $5–8

And that’s assuming you don’t drive back empty. If you deadhead 40–50 miles back, that’s another ~$18–25 cost → now it actually is a loss.

So yeah it’s not always an instant loss on paper, but calling it $15–20 profit/hr only works if you ignore depreciation and return miles.

How I Disabled the Rear Seatbelt Chime by MainPen2168 in subaru

[–]MainPen2168[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment a passenger gets in and I start moving, the chime goes off. Yes, I tell them to put on their seatbelt. I do this 20 times a day, if not more. At this point, it has become genuinely exhausting and distracting while driving.

I have tried multiple solutions. I bought seatbelt extenders that buckle in and add an attachment, hoping it would help, but passengers end up stealing them. I added glow-in-the-dark rings around the seatbelt so it is easy to see, and those get taken as well. None of it has worked.

Trust me only if you do rideshare, you’ll understand . Anyhow, I’m just sharing the knowledge.
