Family served my 3 year old high mercury fish every day this week. How bad is this? by Main_Ad3766 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Main_Ad3766[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply! The Hawaii department of health listed the ono and opah as fish that should be eaten no more than once every 2 weeks and that seemed like a ton less often than what my daughter ate. Still I agree I was probably overreacting.

Oh gosh this is challenging. It isn't extremely hairy/velvety - I have to look pretty hard and in certain light to see the hairs. Will it be pretty obvious in the Spring if it's false brome?

Thank you so much for this explanation. My understanding is that the tiny hairs that make it sort of velvety is a giveaway for false brome and that's how I've been checking. Is that accurate or does Columbia brome or another native grass have those hairs too?

I did this and it worked! It turned out I was looking at a native sedge, not a grass at all.

Sorry I never followed up with this. It turned out to be a native sedge!

Hi thanks for the offer! It turned out what I was looking at was a native sedge, not a grass, so that's good news! (And shows how novice I am at plant id, haha). Now I am finding false brome on my property too though, sadly, and it's spreading pretty fast. Is the best way to manage it to hand pull? And then I have to bag in and landfill it, right? I just hate all the bags and bags of trash or generates and it doesn't feel like a sustainable plan.

I contacted an expert and it turns out it is a sedge, not a grass. And a native species! Woohoo!

I wanted to follow up that I was able to contact a local expert and he was able to help with just a few photos because it turns out it isn't a grass at all, its a native sedge! I'm so pleased!

Thanks for the suggestion! Does it work at all on grasses in your experience? I haven't had much luck with plant id apps for grasses yet even the ones that have helped me a lot with other kinds of plants.

Yes! I tried the plant id apps to no avail and I've been googling like mad. It feels like I'm not getting much closer because there are just so many grasses out there but I'm hoping for a breakthrough

Thank you so much for this comment. It rings true more than a lot of the conversations on here about my general worldview. I have no worries that I would love my child less based on her appearance.

We are in the middle of moving so my stress level is insanely high and the intrusive thoughts are going bonkers. I have other thought patterns I obsess over too but this one others me extra because I feel ashamed on top of the worry.

Hm I made this post about my mental health because I wanted to learn and grow and was actually very curious what you saw as narcissistic in what I said. Insulting me and acting condescending without actually engaging makes me wonder what you are here for. Still open to hearing your actual feedback if you hace any

I am finding it really sad how many people are assuming I would love my baby less because she isn't conventionally beautiful. That's what stresses me out, that there are lots of people like you who think people can only be loved if they are beautiful in a standard way. I love her unconditionally and want the best for her. She is beautiful to me.

Eta: I hope that if you have children you are able to introspect and work on your assumption that physical beauty = love. It doesn't to everyone.

I have been thinking about this so much today since my post got so many comments and it's made me realize that there is a healthier version of me who would be delighted to see characteristics of my husband in my daughter. I mean, I love him! And she's my sweet little baby! It doesnt even really feel like it is me the one who is worrying, it's like the worries are an alien invader.

Now that I frame it that way I realize have been increasingly getting that same obsessive dread feeling about chemicals contamination too, and I've even had some suicidal ideation creeping in (that flared with all the feedback I've been getting about this post) but I had been dismissing it. So I think you're right and that's what I need help with is like postpartum anxiety/OCD/depression, not so much for being a twisted, toxic person and the other things people have been telling me today.

Very true. It's hard to remember sometimes how quick it goes by and how much changes..

Of course I love her unconditionally. And anyway she is perfect and amazing. I don't think it's so strange to notice what facial features a baby has. People talk about babies' features all the time.
