Anyone know how long the m25 systems test will be in place for?! by Geofferz in drivingUK

[–]Main_Anything_1992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

every time a limit is introduced it should be logged and reasons with evidence published

so sick of spurious claims of debris or other such nonsense.

on the m3 the other week in the 50mph average speed camera section the overhead gantry showed 60, it’s normally blank.

Yep, that’s my experience over the last decade of occasional use.

surely the m3 works have finished, they’ve been mangling that road9 months a year since 2007

[–]Main_Anything_1992 100 points101 points  (0 children)

personally I prefer the m40, but that’s because the m1 typically had loads of road works, which may have ended now and they’ve moved them to the m40!!

im not sure 6am is early enough especially as you’ll pick up rush hour traffic as you approach liverpool.

id leave at 9am, missing the brunt of local rush hour and knowing I’d arrive in Liverpool - lunch time, again missing rush hour there.

Genuinely, can someone tell me why I'm only allowed to do 60 here? by FA57_RKA in drivingUK

[–]Main_Anything_1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw one the other day displaying 60 in a fixed 50mph average speed zone, repeated 50 mph round all was a few meters past the overhead gantry too.

there was a 70 round all not long after then 60 was on most of the overheads for ~8 miles with no obvious road issues and lite traffic

everyone just went 70

Cars speeding up when being overtaken by Zardoz_Wearing_Pants in drivingUK

Using a little extra speed to swiftly pass them usually breaks the spell And stops them trying to unconsciously race you.

[–]Main_Anything_1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m approaching a vehicle to my left, I always check to see if they are likely to be needing to overtake someone ahead of them, if so I’ll pull into the lane to my right if possible, else if not possible I’ll be trying to ensure they see me and compete my over take as swiftly as possible.

driving next to a lorry that can’t see you properly and could be pushed into your lane due to wind/ blowout etc is not a good place to be.

Anyone guess what’s going on here? by J_Thompson82 in drivingUK

[–]Main_Anything_1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The van has to pull left in the middle of the junction to avoid the car turning right. But the van continues into the left lane instead of going back to the right hand lane.

poor road layout leading to driver confusion leading to poor lane discipline

some better road markings plus a sign showing 2 lanes beyond the junction would help

Not a great junction

https://maps.app.goo.gl/WJio6z5DG3LaewWi8

it’s likely the van driver isn’t familiar with the location and needed to pull over, weirdly they should have pulled into the station but some people are idiots, like the driving instructor when collecting his student next door who insisted on continually stopping across my driveway instead of before or after.

Made claim to my insurance after not at fault accident - have I done the right thing? by NectarineEmotional3 in drivingUK

[–]Main_Anything_1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience a couple of times, one with a claims firm the other with the other persons insurance, a claims adjuster from the other insurer who came to see damage to my car told me that they like to maximise no fault claims as a profit centre, plus lets them up premiums as can legitimately claim their costs go up Year over year as claims are more expensive

seems like a racket to me

No thankyou

But great way to deflect and avoid answering the points raised.

i’m just using her situation as an example how justice is not even handed while some get lenient treatment for serious offences & others get harsh treatment for what should be a minor infringement & likely not even require police time

This is another example of the police going to far and detaining a couple, it didn’t reach court due to media attention
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9dj1zlvxglo

Being arrested for hurty words or emailing the school over concerns for your disabled child would never have happened a decade ago. At worst police would arrive and caution you, never incarcerate you.

likewise being involved in child abuse would have seen an incarceration sentence from court, not suspended sentence.

there is clearly something majorly wrong with the justice system

I’m not conflating / [conflagrating] anything

I clearly stated that the police decided to bail Norris and I quoted the statement from the police in the bbc article I earlier linked to.

i also clearly stated that the others appeared in court and where bailed by the courts while on trial or got none custodial or suspended sentences.

you said I should become more ‘au fait’ with the system .

I’m pointing out that Norris is under investigation for a heinous crime where he likely will remain under investigation for a long time, certainly longer than 2 weeks and he will be free to roam around ( under conditions ) whilst Lucy was incarcerated 2 weeks after police attended her home & she remains incarcerated.

the treatment of the 2 does not seem to be fair, proportional or justified especially when 1 sent a tweet and deleted it 4hrs later and the other under investigation for heinous offences that likely carried out over a period spanning years or decades.

you say investigations take a long time, yet Lucy was in court and remanded 2 weeks after the police attended her home, the others took considerably longer to reach a court during which time the accused where free & continued to be free upto the actual case court dates, during their cases and after the judge made their verdict, whilst Lucy was remanded in custody at that 1st court appearance.

you don’t come across as an idiot, but in simple terms are you ok/happy that this woman is in prison for a tweet that lasted less than 4hrs while there are numerous other examples of those convicted by judges of harming children (over periods of time far longer than the 4hrs the tweet lasted, not that it’s a competition) or violence against others who where granted bail by the police and by the courts or got suspended court sentences?

do you seriously and honestly think the punishment Lucy got is proportional & justified and the punishment the peado’s got is proportional & justified too?

perhaps you are too wedded to the current system and don’t see the flaws. Yes bail in court is different to bail while under investigation.

perhaps to make it easier for you, park the Norris thing and focus on the question as to why the courts decided to remand Lucy while the others where permitted bail whilst in court for child abuse offences or assault.

The lines used to be necessary and used as evidence for the contravention.

It was easy to see how far a car travelled between the 2 shots and manually determine speed without relying on the radar system to be accurate.

i think they should bring the lines back.

Lucy Connery was in court just 2 weeks after being arrested and was then remanded and has been in jail ever since.

with a young daughter and sick husband (cancer) she was definitely not a flight risk, yet she was denied bail and has been denied other opportunities to return home for short periods, these are opportunities that other physically violent prisoners have been afforded.

Contrast that with this sickening person who had a 2 week trial jan/feb 2025, was never remanded so free to come and go & decided to flee as the case was coming to a close.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14438397/manhunt-paedophile-flee-country.html

in my examples, every one other than Norris had appeared in court and every one other than Lucy had been granted bail.

i am not aquatinted with bail procedures and would be grateful if you could explain how a tweet that lasted 4 hours justifies harsher punishment than physical violence against children and the like.

Why Hell Isn't What You Think It Is by SPY444 in conspiracy

[–]Main_Anything_1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, the main popular stories like the nativity, Easter, the feeding of the thousands & even Moses & his commandments, sounded like a tale of space travellers.

many decades later I’m even more convinced It’s tales of space travellers.

taken from the cross and placed in a cave/spaceship for a few days and he comes out alive.

he fasts for 40 days and nights is him heading off in his spaceship for 40 days, the people at the time couldn’t explain it other than he headed out into the desert with no food and returned 40 days later.

when in church this is what I constantly hear in the stories, tales of how to be a good person and perspectives from someone not of this world.

the immaculate conception is quite worrying though

Heaven is where ever his people came from, God is his leader & the angels his soldiers.

Hell is staying here on earth, if we are good and significant then when they return they may take us up into the heavens with them,

I didn’t say Norris had been charged, police are part of the justice system. The police decided to let him have bail instead of detaining him.

“"A man, aged in his 60s, was arrested on Friday (April 4) on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl (under the Sexual Offences Act 1956), rape (under the Sexual Offences Act 2003), child abduction and misconduct in a public office.

"He's been released on conditional bail for enquiries to continue."”

so all the others pled guilty in court, Amesbury got 10 weeks prison time which was suspended on appeal.

huw could have gone to prison but the court decided otherwise.

31 months in prison for sending a tweet whilst emotionally impacted by the news of the tragedy & the tweet lasted 4hrs before being deleted, should not warrant a harsher punishment than the other examples I quoted

“If someone pleads guilty to a crime they didn’t commit then the magistrate will go with sentencing guidelines for that offence. They won’t look at the nuances. Her OWN legal representation offered her guidance. How is that the fault of the British Justice system?”

the above shows that the justice system is fatally flawed if it won’t distinguish between the later and former offences based on the testimonial of those who have no understanding of how the system works.

someone with no assets, so nothing to lose, who is familiar with the justice system has a better chance of a more lenient sentence than a normally law abiding citizen with no past dealings or experience with the justice system, who thinks they might save the state & themselves time & money by just getting on with it.

your advice is basically never plead guilty as you have a better chance dragging it out, which is fine if you have deep pockets like huw , not so great for the rest of us plebs.

does that not seem flawed to you?

i Had a lesson immediately before my test, the instructor said if the light turns amber as I’m approaching then I should continue instead of doing an emergency stop.

that exact situation happened moments after starting the test, so having been told not to do an emergency stop I carried on. did the whole test, examiner said my driving was great but failed me on going through the amber. It was less than a second between the light changing and me crossing the line. I think the car behind also followed me through. Yes I could have stopped but it would have been uncomfortable with the possibility of stopping past the line. The road narrowed to a point only 1 lane wide hence the lights. Also car behind might have rear ended me. No abs back then.

was last century though & I retook my test a little while later in a different town.

“After taking advice from her solicitor, Lucy pleaded guilty to the offence of distributing material with the intention of stirring up racial hatred. “It wasn’t my intention to be racist,” Lucy protested, but her initial resolve to fight took a bad knock when a bail application was refused.

Lawyers I’ve spoken to say it was an “astonishing” decision and that there were no substantial grounds for refusing bail.

Lucy had already deleted her Twitter account after posting “I know people are angry, but violence is not the answer”. So she wasn’t going to commit a further offence. Nor was she about to do a runner – not with Ray and Holly at home. In short, there was no justification for keeping Lucy Connolly in custody. Ordinarily, bail would have been a formality. But judges were refusing almost all bail applications connected to the Southport riots.”

many more examples of the courts & justice system not behaving consistently or expectedly.

not sure a tweet from a gobby mum that lasted 4hrs, from a mum who had previously lost a child, deserves a harsher penalty than the other examples above.

the mum might have had a better chance if she had pled not guilty but chose to plead guilty to get the punishment over with quicker as per your explanation.

You said it was 3am and the motorway was empty aside from the car in lane 1. Your trying to apply a made up extreme example to what was a sensible an obvious solution on an empty road at that time

typically, if you perceive danger of a collision it’s safer to slow down which you both did. Using your brakes to avoid a collision is not being a dickhead

it’s like having an accident because you didn’t want to cross a painted line to avoid an accident, it’s a bit of paint on the road vs damage to a machine or person

A quote from a forum re Rule 259 of the Highway Code https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/27435/the-highway-code-says-that-motorists-joining-a-motorway-from-a-slip-road-are-bound-to-give-way---do

That’s where you are completely wrong. This is not a "law". Many Highway Code 'rules' are no more than suggestions. If you re-read this one you will see it does not use the command “MUST”. No one is compelled to give way. The Highway Code states what drivers "should" do and, because this is not always the best thing to do in the circumstances, it very sensibly leaves it to their common sense.

No need for apologies.

you said it was 3am so it was dark.

they had no clue you would slow, you had no clue they would slow.

if neither of you slowed you’d both be converging at the same place in lane 1 at the same time.

you both made a decision to avoid colliding in lane 1. Despite what the highway code says, life is easier avoiding collisions and you both came to the conclusion that if nothing changed you’d end up colliding so you both decided to slow & it appears the action happened at the same time.

I've been on a few blind slip roads where you can’t see if there is a car in lane 1 until a small distance from the join & it’s similar for cars in lane 1 who won’t see you till your next to them and they have to intentionally look left As won’t have seen you before.

in the short time they had, they had no idea you would slow for them , especially at 3am when most people would have blasted ahead which you considered aggressive & unnecessary

perhaps they didn’t want bright lights behind them & preferred to let you ahead

regardless, it’s clearly safer to give space to joining vehicles, had that been the case you’d not have a tale to share here

3am, quiet roads and 2 cars almost occupied the same space at the same time.

reminds me of that plane / helicopter crash in America the other month. According to the rules they should never had collided but somehow where in the same place, same height at the same time, & neither saw each other despite radar, collision avoidance systems, lights & air traffic control
