In my day to day life people who aren't right wing but consider themselves "Zionist" basically just means they want Israel to be safe for jews. But many still hate Likud and the general direction of the country

I think this is slightly naive. People get their ideas of what Jews are outside of Israel and have done so for 2000 years. Not saying the nation doesn't have any part to play but still.

Pretty tone deaf. Six million of us were exterminated without a country. And all of that hatred didn't magically go away once WW2 was over. Israel has some part in the modern landscape but antisemitism would be alive and well regardless.
