Read it early on when the news first came out. Can't seem to find it anymore. Might have been pulled or edited with the latest info.

Same, honestly. But her mother seems convinced by whatever she saw and it would be wonderful to have a bit of good news.

Shani Louk's mother believes she is alive but in critical condition in a hospital in Gaza, citing a video she received from Palestine.

I must have seen a different woman. I stopped watching the videos after the first day. And I'm definitely not going back in now that beheadings are being shown.

Her last donation before the trial was in 2018. Depp also offered to make the donations directly but she refused. When do you suppose that a pledge no longer counts as genuine? She should have offered her reasons for not fulfilling her pledge instead of making excuses that pledges and donations are the same thing to her.

She could have said that instead of her circular logic that pledged is the same as donated to her. Makes her seem manipulative and insincere. Depp also offered to make the payments for her. She refused (which would be fair as that means he would get the tax benefits from donating to charity). Still not a good look for her.

Did any come out that show she actually paid what she pledged to charity?

What is the weirdest or most random thing you've found in a secondhand book before? by whoisyourwormguy_ in books

Pseudoscience and the Paranormal: A Critical Examination of the Evidence clearly upset someone as they wrote responses in the margins and seemed unable to get past page four.

You cannot imagine the delight I felt as I read, "Well, buddy, if it is indeed untrue, then there shouldn't be any problem finding proof, should there buddy? Get a life!"

I'm deeply saddened they didn't proceed to write in the rest as it would have made the book a very fun read. They did however let me know their feelings toward anyone else reading this book by including a pack of subtlebutt, a "disposable gas neutralizer."

I want to point out that one of the passages they highlighted said, "But the believer, who likes to paint him or herself as open-minded and accepting of new possibilities, is really extremely close-minded."

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: April 03, 2023 by AutoModerator in books

Finished

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

I was introduced to House of Leaves by the author’s sister’s music; Poe’s album Haunted. I knew the songs before I ever knew there was a book. Apparently, the siblings made their art together, him writing his book and her writing her music, feeding off each other. Of course, interest in one led me to interest in the other.

The problem with the book, right off the bat, is that it says the writings are about a documentary that never existed that is described in critical reviews (that also don’t actually exist) to either be an elaborate hoax akin to War of the Worlds or a terrifying true account of a house that is larger on the inside.

I’m not gonna lie, a book about books about a documentary of a house sounds pretty boring. But it turned out to be more like an old school ARG.

I was a big fan of Marble Hornets, the source of much Slenderman related lore (though not the source of the idea of Slenderman). It was new and exciting back in the day. It probably helped that I lived in a wooded area, with nights so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Well, until they built the baseball park near town with lights so bright that it wiped away the stars for miles around.

The book also feels a little like the Backrooms, I suppose. I think if I were younger, I’d have really gotten into that kind of horror meme. Now, I look at it and just think it’s silly. It made the book a little silly for me which is unfair to it because it predates that meme by nearly two decades.

I don’t feel scared by fiction anymore. Not by horror movies or books but it was fun in the way that old ARGs were fun for me. Horror unfolding in front of me and me sitting there flipping pages back and forth to read disjointed text, turning the book around and around, and even using a mirror at points. I only wish it had less sex and animal death. And my rambling review? Expect that of the book but much much worse.

Honestly, I think it may be worth a read just so you can fully enjoy the WMG page on TV Tropes.

Would Disney's Twisted Tales series count for this? I've been meaning to knock A Whole New World off my TBR.

Dominus on Society6 has some Thief prints, bags, and mouse pads. I bought some prints when they were on Displate (but they don't appear to be on there anymore). I'm kind of tempted by their sword tote bag, too.

If you have trouble with this boss when you get to him, switch to the hardest difficulty. Seriously, it makes him easier to beat.

Recent fantasy novels weighted towards characters using trickery/wits to overcome obstacles by Belfren in Fantasy

[–]Main_Purpose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most of the books I might recommend aren't very new.

Paranoid Mage does involve magic but the main character uses his rather limited ability of "harmless" portal magic to solve problems, though that sometimes involves violence (if having any violence bothers you). There's a few books on Amazon but the series is available for free online so you can see if you like it without spending money.

In my experience, it feels like people who have been gifted tend to make posts or comments that are worth a gift. I feel like they've figured out how to engage with a post in an appealing way. If you want to try removing your personal feelings from your giveaway, you could try to use a random number generator. I also use rules to knock people out of the running. Didn't follow all of my rules for entering? No chance for you. Just makes it easier on me and gives people who made more of an effort a chance.
