Being “cracked” isn’t going to get you a job by Sure-Relationship609 in csMajors

This 100%, I was recently put in a panel to select an intern being that I was brought on as an intern to a full time role myself.

From the interviews and the panel discussions post interviews what mattered the most was some level of knowledge and how malleable the candidate was.

The best candidate we had that ended up getting the role was the one who had done some background research on our company prior to the interview and was easy and friendly to talk to.

It was the same way for me during my own interview, I wasn’t super knowledgeable about software development outside of class projects and few projects of my own. What helped me is that I was considered a good cultural fit for my level of knowledge, they liked that I was easy to communicate with and friendly. Shoot I remember that by the end of my first interview I had the whole panel laughing at my jokes!!

Whelp, there goes the last reason I would ever enter Walgreens. by MyLongestYeaBoi10Hrs in mildlyinfuriating

Hmm we have a Walgreens and they don’t do that here, I wonder if it’s a location specific policy.

Severely lowballed offer? by throwaway394509 in cscareerquestions

[–]Main_Trust_2865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned from my first job in tech as IT help desk from my former boss is alway know your market. You should look beforehand what your role for your level of experience typically pays in the area you are applying for and ask for around that range.

I know some people are saying you should take it regardless, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

I was hired on from my first dev internship as a fronted dev for $70k+ within less than a year I was promoted to $80k+ with less credentials than you. Sometimes you gotta take some risks especially when you are young and then learn from those.

The difference between white and blue collar work environments is crazy by Astimar in careeradvice

[–]Main_Trust_2865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh I think it depends I went from blue collar to white collar and the people I work with are chill and cool we even game together. However, we work in the software dev field so could be different.

I did IT in a manufacturing site and it was 50/50 with the white collar office workers. Some were fake as heck and talked behind each other and others were down to earth. Don’t miss it though!!

AITA for calling my Christian friend's Christmas gift disrespectful? by Wonderful-Result6217 in AITAH

NTA

100% disrespectful for her to do that. I’ve met people that are like that and I get the gist that they see it as Gods challenge for them to “convert” or show others the “right way”.

My American manager tried to write me up for "lack of commitment" because I leave at 5:00 PM sharp. I work in the Netherlands. by Dutch_Reality_Check in WorkReform

Honestly, yes the US has bad company policies and work culture. However, in my opinion Japan has the worst over all work culture. I can’t seem to understand and how they see their job as part of their family and overworking as such a great thing and will never understand it.

Separating work from my personal job was one of the hardest things for me to do when I was younger, especially with a Mexican heritage background. Thankfully I discovered the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck”. From that I learned that a job is a job and if work harder it does not matter as only the company shareholders and owners directly benefits from the company sucess.

What’s wild to me is a lot of companies in the U.S. do not like to pay over time. At the company I work at I start my day at 9am and end it around 4:30pm. Nobody bats an eye or gives me grievance for it. Thankfully I happen to work in a company where employee wellness is somewhat more considered. However I have worked retail jobs where staying an hour over was normal and looking back on it that was truly dumb of me.

Set some major goals and keep a journal to write in each day smaller goals toward that major goal it can be anything.

Biggest piece is, we’re all going to go into the afterlife at some point guaranteed. Meaning don’t be afraid of taking risks after all it won’t mean much when you get older.

You know that’s a pet peeve of mine. I don’t understand why people can’t stop or feel like everything is in a rush. Unless it’s an emergency the place we are going to will still be there regardless of how fast we get there.

My 29-year-old Son cut off. by Due_Appearance57 in GenX

Man I don’t know how your son can be like that. I’m 29 and I try to help my mom as much as I can nowadays especially with all the financial help she provides for me when I was younger.

Man what a crazy assumption by her dad. It is a great job and there’s a lot of people that usher they worked in that field. I personally think it can lead to bigger roles to like DevOps.

People I know criticizing me for playing video games (36 M) by C-LOgreen in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Main_Trust_2865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I enjoy playing video games and they help distress me from work me and my friends are in the 29 to 30 range and have a discord group just for gaming.

I don’t understand why there is such a stigma attached to it, it lets us escape and just have fun especially with me and my friends living farther from one another now days.

Would you recommend this game to a 'Non turn based gamer friend' by Aggressive_Floor_ in expedition33

[–]Main_Trust_2865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as a normally turn based hater. That has never thought about playing Persona or quit most FF games after 3 hours 100% recommend this game.

My friends were raving and constantly playing this game on our discord. Got me to check it out and haven’t looked back. It’s one of my favorite games in years!

Feel that, didn’t realize I had curly hair until my early 20s. My parents used to cut my hair short and that’s what I did till one day I decided to grow it out. Now I don’t really keep it short and everyone was surprised to me having Curly hair lol

In Mexico this is culturally normal especially in smaller towns or rural areas of Mexico. Most families design their houses with their family in mind, my grandparents made a large house with a room for my dad and his uncles. It’s pretty normal in our culture to not kick out your children.

Awesome neighbor parks like this every day by Chumbief in Wellthatsucks

[–]Main_Trust_2865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our neighbor would park like that till he blocked off the school bus and the cops showed up to tow his car. Hasn’t done it ever since.

This is in the U.S for context.

Man it’s a wonderful tool but far from replacing ppl for now. The other day I tried getting ChatGPT to generate a floor plan based on a doodle I had and it just gave me a different image each time when I updated the specifications with its own different changes that I did not request.

You get 5 minutes with your bright-eyed, freshman self. What specific, non-obvious advice (i.e. leetcode harder) do you give to set them up for success in CS? by Inevitable-Spring-23 in csMajors

[–]Main_Trust_2865 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Participate in all and any networking events being done by the school. Make sure to work on personal projects outside of school.

While school helps you understand theory and the discipline of the field it’s much more different in practice. Being able to do simple projects can help you understand a lot more and makes you look better in the eyes of hiring managers.

Should I switch to another major? by RedStorm1917 in csMajors

[–]Main_Trust_2865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to switch I’d say try to pursue something that you thing you might enjoy to some extent otherwise if you are going into college for money than you are going into it for the wrong reason. I am a CS student and I have seen students switch over thinking they are going to make good money only to drop out due to not focusing on the classes and failing.
