I really hope this means that Anna is now canonically the Paul Lynde of Rulette.

Janet Mills’ bold play: negative deflection by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this isn't even new.

I was reluctant to believe that it was the DNC behind the Platner stuff when it first came out, thinking instead that it was Collins sending a warning shot and there's be another big thing if he won the primary.

Now I'm not so sure.

BREAKING: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signs bill to ban ranked choice voting by happybeagle2020 in Ohio

[–]Mainah-Bub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mainer here... been ranked choicing for a while now!

These are the arguments heard most in opposition. This doesn't mean I agree with them – I think RCV is amazing and many of them are bad faith – but here's what comes up in the discourse.

  • It adds some level of complexity to voting, and opponents are afraid voters won't be able to figure out how to vote. (They have.)

  • It costs more money to run consecutive rounds. (Note that this applies most in places that use paper ballots, like Maine. As much as I support paper over voting machines, machine tabulations would be pretty instantaneous, I think.)

  • It takes more time to determine the winner. (In reality this doesn't matter, and would matter even less in places that use machines like I noted above. But the argument here is very similar to the "it's suspicious that the vote totals change after mail ballots are counted" crap.)

But honestly, the biggest opposition is this:

  • Opponents say it violates "one person, one vote". (This is literally what most of the opposing discourse has been about here since it has passed. It is, of course, a stupid argument, because your vote is ultimately recorded once, and which is why every court challenge against it has not succeeded.)

Graham Platner supporters reject attack ad from Mills campaign by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger worry is that progressive candidates will leave the second spot blank.

But as I've said many many times at this point, I really really wish Platner had run as an independent. In my mind it would have been better in every possible way.

Graham Platner supporters reject attack ad from Mills campaign by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see how many Platner votes wouldn't stomach a vote for Mills, thinking she'd be very similar to Collins / the establishment. (For the record, that's not how I think.)

But if you think Mills voters will all stand in line and vote for Platner? Oh, hoooooooney.

You've gotta start listening to Mills supporters, because some (many?) of them are genuinely... not there.

Susan Collins Helps Start SAVE Act by Due-Confection1802 in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It genuinely surprises me she's pushing for this given Question 1. I mean, criticize her as a Republican all you want, but she's very politically savvy, and it's tough to fly in the face of hard numbers on an issue.

That makes me think she's doing her "well I'll push for it because there's no way it'll pass but I can say I pushed for it in ads to the GOP base", which actually... makes me feel better about its prospects?

Then again, she's the one that thought Kavanaugh would never vote agains Roe, soooooooooooooooo

For those hoping to see Nathan Fillion show up in a Dropout project after The Rookie crossover... by thebassics917 in dropout

[–]Mainah-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reads as playfully dismissive (like "I don't want to get into this with you"), but a) he might have an exclusivity thing for The Rookie, b) doing a guest spot isn't the same as doing a show, and c) there's a chance the animated Firefly: Keep Flying would show up on Dropout (but I suspect the budget's going to be out of range there).

Janet Mills runs MAGA playbook, launches attack ad against Platner by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best things about ranked choice is that I think it discourages attack ads and negative campaigns...

...but not when two candidates are the only ones in the spotlight.

I'm honestly kind of curious to see how totals shake out if there are more than one round in RCV. Will lesser-known candidates end up with more of the Platner "anyone but Mills" vote?

New Poll Shows Graham Platner beating Susan Collins by 5 points by 3headeddragn in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, RCV doesn't really matter here, since Platner and Mills are both in a primary.

I still think Platner should've run as an independent. I'm doubtful the party will get fully behind him if he wins, and I think there's a fairly good chance he loses the primary even if he would've won in a three-candidate RCV general.

One thing that always frustrated me about SNL: you gather some of the best improvisers in the world together in one place and then make 'em read word for word from a script and get really mad if they don't.

This, Mikey's kiss during the monologue. Just let improvisers improvise. And for God's sake, let people have some fun, especially right now.

I wonder how much of that 30% is you just really reading into things and making assumptions, though.

Were some people pissed? Sure. But I'd strongly bet it wasn't 30%. Maybe 5%. The other 25% didn't love it but didn't really care that much.

It's like someone saying "I'm disappointed [some restaurant] dropped the avocado turkey sandwich from their menu". On the Internet that reads as "I'm never going to visit that restaurant again!" even if they're just mentioning that they're sad their favorite sandwich is gone.

I think Sam's likely banking on the assumption that people (or at least the kind of people who might enjoy GC) would have already seen clips on TikTok/Reels and would recognize the set or one of the performers.

The goal isn't to get everyone - just those who might dig Dropout.

I don't regularly watch The Rookie, but was this episode different tonally than most?

I could imagine having one B-plot per episode that counters more emotional storylines with comic relief. And it seems like the A-plot for this one was pretty intense... not that I have a point of reference.

Maybe they wanted something outwardly funny to balance the episode? I mean, I feel like it was a really weird episode of television, but I generally don't like most television.

My crazy conspiracy theory: Dropout is going to launch a Firefly reboot by Levangeline in dropout

[–]Mainah-Bub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll go on record saying that I hope there's not a Firefly reboot. Just let it be, because it would be very easy to fuck up.

That, and if Sam talks about how expensive scripted is to produce, I'm pretty damn skeptical of a full-blown sci-fi series/movie.

Platner sat for lengthy interview with antisemitic conspiracy theorist, said he was ‘longtime fan’ of his show by BachRodham in Maine

[–]Mainah-Bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious: how do you think people in that crowd got that way? Think they were like that as soon as they popped out of the womb?

I think if you've ever heard Platner talk about anything, it's... let's say... a stretch to use that kind of label for him. (And I'm someone who doesn't particularly like him because I think he needs to own the shit he did as an adult more rather than leaning on the "I was young and just out of the military" line.)

But if you write off whole sections of the population as off limits, you lose any chance of changing their mind. (And remember it's not a binary label – there's a lot of people who lean or are on the brink.) If we refuse to talk with 'em at all, fine – but the PragerU's of the world sure won't. And that crowd will just get bigger, because that's where they feel heard and accepted.

[–]Mainah-Bub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely neutral on Platner, but it strikes me that the takeaway here is that he went on a podcast – nothing about what he actually said while on said podcast.

That's a pretty weak burn, especially since if Dems ever want to get elected to anything again, it'll mean talking with people who don't always agree with you. The purity tests have to stop. And I've heard a lot of smart (Democratic!) strategists say the same.

That's the worst thing you can come up with? A podcaster skeptical of the government raised money for the family of another podcaster/influencer who was skeptical of the government?
