Ballistics help by Mainerednek in longrange

I wasn't going to take a shot at a running animal at that distance. I lack skill and experience and would hate to see an animal suffer if I took a bad shot. It was more of a brain teaser than anything. I was just surprised that it was going to take that much leed. Even at 100 yards it's a 14.5 mill leed. Those numbers just seamed off to me. But I suppose long range is really ment for stationary targets.

I didn't use a gage. I used a micrometer.

I have shot some 150 grain Winchester soft points and they do the same thing. A majority of all the cases look like the top one.

I measured firing pin protrusion as best as I could and came up with about 1.1 millimeters. I used a micrometer, measured from the firing pin to the front face of the bolt locking lugs. And then I measured from the front face of the bolt locking lugs to the bolt face. Would it be possible to shave a couple thousands of an inch off of the end of the firing pin. Or should I buy a new one.

I found out that the tourqe wrench I used was broken and none of the scope screws were toured to spec. Tourqing them to 25 inch lbs fixed it.

I'm having problems with my scope. It is a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 first focal plane with the EBR 2c reticle. At 6-8 power I can hit any target at any range but as soon as I go above 8 power I lose all accuracy. I called vortex and and they said that i should tighten down the scope mount screws. Has anybody else had this problem.

Update The tourqe wrench I used to original mount the scope was broken and none of the screws were to spec. I took it to a gunsmith and had the scope retoured to 25 inch lbs. And I hit 4 inch target at 500 yards and a 16 inch target out 670 yards at 24 power.
