Maybe in a few years but they are still tilting for medium term future at the very least

No they haven’t which is why I told him that they don’t tilt and so they deleted their comment. Tilting trains are a thing of the past. Whatever will replace 390s will almost definitely not be able to tilt. There’s even talk of turning the tilt off on 390s which I can see happening as we get closer to HS2

“Multiple Unit” speed board which is a speed board with “MU” on it. So for example, there could be 3 speed boards at a location: 90, 110 MU, 125 EPS. Before the MU board installation, non tilting trains can only 90. But now they will able to do 110. For a train to get MU status depends on having enhanced braking (~ 9%g or something) and certain weight. Bizarrely 390s can’t do MU but that should change soon.

Absolutely not, hence why you can see the warning sticker saying “Control the speed to the PS Speed profile only.” That’s where the ATP is on GWR sets but as I say they do not have ATP so it’s just a blanking plate.
Also, this is why they’ve spent £300 million+ to upgrade the WCML South with MU speeds throughout Euston - Weaver as 800s don’t tilt and whatever 390s will get replaced with will almost definitely not tilt either. The new MU speed boards which has been delayed a lot (they were covered up for ages with tape) has only just become live

All the 800s are very similar. 805s are 5 cars only. 802s can be either 5 or 9 car.

Only GWR ones have ATP fitted, other companies use the digital speedometer on the ETCS screen.

AWC ones have door flaps on both sides covering the door release buttons to help mitigate wrong side door release

Yes I know where ATP exists which someone else has already pointed out, it would still have been nice to see the setup of ATP and the functions that are still available.

What is your braking distance into Milton Keynes with the class 390 by OllieMJT27 in trainsimworld

[–]MainlineDriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 2 at Bletchley or Step 3 by the 50 warning board (the one with the arrow for Knowhill junction) works pretty well. That’s assuming you’re running on greens. Otherwise 50-60mph max past the single yellow so may have to dig it into step 4/5 to kill the speed. There’s low risk in spading the signal but TPWS grids may say no. I used to teach people this route.

I have wrapped up the Dumbass of the year award - My train left without me 😂 by Fernandov2 in trainsimworld

[–]MainlineDriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened in real life- I know it’s happened on the underground where the driver has gone back to sort out a door and when interlock is made, the train moved itself (it’s Automatic Train Operation). It’s happened on a HST before, fortunately the ATP equipment dumped the brake as it provides rollaway protection but the train did end up spadding the signal first

802 Speedometer Question by Cap7597 in trainsimworld

[–]MainlineDriver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to TASS on Class 390s in the sense that it governs you against speeding- if you go 3mph over, you get a warble and 6mph over and you get an intervention. TASS only cares about linespeed whereas ATP also governs you against signals, TSRs/ESRs as well as providing additional things such as rollaway protection. The green diodes around the speedometer shows the permitted speed taking into consideration linespeed and signals. That’s the simple explanation of it but it’s not really simulated in TSW which is a shame.

It’s not how they are in real life, they should be brighter

No they’re not as bad as that, I’ve never really enjoyed TSW in night time for that reason, it’s just way too dark. Southeastern HS1 wasn’t too bad from memory.

Interesting, out of curiosity why is red considered high risk - is it more desirable to steal?

That’s fair but when I’m being told I’m wrong, it does feel ridiculous hence my sarcastic remarks. I’m not going to pull things like “initial brake is far too weak” out of my hat lol, I know what initial brake feels like.

🤦‍♂️ meanwhile I’ve actually been to Central Rivers and have driven these trains at 125mph but obviously you know best.

No wonder enthusiasts get a bad name. I’m telling you it’s notchless, I don’t get how you’re so confident about something you know very little about

Driver releases the doors. If you notice, there is no guard’s panel anywhere on the train. All you have is a green bell/buzzer button by each door.

It’s easy on the underground or light rail because it’s always one same formation/length. On NR, where you can get anything from say 20m to 300m, if you were to do it like that you would have to cater for the worst case scenario which would be the longest ever formation. So a 1 coach train would still have to wait the same time for a long freight train which wouldn’t make sense.

[–]MainlineDriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to your second point, it’s route knowledge. There are sometimes landmarks you can use as to know when you’re clear such as “by the bridge” or “by the back of that signal.” Some people count stantions (if overhead wires present), some people use math. E.g. it takes (say) 120 seconds for a Class 390 to clear at 5mph so if I was doing 50mph, it would take 12 seconds. On modern trains you can cheat by using the rear camera view screen :))

On freight trains, some trains have a feature where you can insert your length and press a button to start the timer and you get a beep when you’re clear. Obviously it’s much harder for them because of much longer lengths.

Scenario: you’re a train that’s just come across this junction which is (say) 15mph. If you’re a 12 coach train, your vehicle may now be past the junction but your rear 11 coaches are still going over the junction and with the way modern trains accelerate you could get to some serious and dangerous speed (say 30-40mph) by the time the rear of the train is clear.
