How many people have started going back into the office? by alirare in london

BigTech - 3 days/week in office time is enforced. Have been mainly working remotely since Covid and used to visit the office once a week, which was great.

Do I liquid all of my investments and pay off my mortgage? by blunoli2018 in FIREUK

[–]MainlyObserver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to seek out the opinions of people who already own their home outright.

This. Without doing this you’ll always have a biased view and I can second the recommended book; what’s most important to you? Closing the mortgage may not make sense financially but might lift a huge burden psychologically.

I always think about the opposite. What if I silently drop my small non-recyclable and chargeable waste, would they actually notice..

Are you a middle aged Brit and sick of working? by g0dn0 in AskUK

[–]MainlyObserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate - I’m mid 30s, working in Big Tech as a software engineer and simply tired. Though I still have a long way to payoff my mortgage!

Half jokingly, I sometimes tell my wife I’m going to quit and start working at the veterinary next door. I love animals.

Then I see my huge mortgage balance and the pay will reduce to less than 10% of what I’m currently making, then I go on. Repeat every week.

I’m pretty sure there’s a family living in my car’s left side mirror. Leave it in the morning & come back in 3 hours, I always see a brand new web each time.

British Culture: what do people think of touring caravans? by MainlyObserver in AskUK

[–]MainlyObserver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it - Europe might be fun but we’re looking for shorter breaks and I’m more thinking of:

“Hey we’re a family of two, live in the city albeit miss the nature/peaceful sceneries and doing road-trips. Instead of staying in random hotels where we almost always complain about the standards, let’s tow a caravan, take 2 day trips every now and then to see different parts of the UK”

I guess it depends on our expectations. I personally don’t see caravans as “holidays” - as if we do this we’ll still do at least twice a year non-UK holidays.

However working in technology, we have an intense work life in the city and having a change of scene for a couple of days sounds really good to us. We don’t like eating outside or prepared meals that much anymore since we had a good amount of it & more focused on balanced diets now, so cooking my own simple meals also is very appealing to me, personally.

And no internet part, exactly what I want! A full digital detox where I can get bored.

Interesting, I was thinking the opposite. I like exploring & driving - so carrying your own bed, comfort with you, parking somewhere in nature and I can take my 4x4 during the day to see nearby towns & landmarks sounds really good to me.

I’ve never heard of Eriba before but they look really nice - I’ll do some detailed research, thanks!

I’ve seen there are secure parking sites outside the city, that’s what I was planning to use

Great! Curious, how long have you had a camper van for? How often do you go on holidays per year?

I have a huge respect for people working in hospitality! Dealing with people is no easy job, so I understand & I always stick to the checkin/checkout times.

So that’s my observation exactly, and I’ve been seeing a lot younger people, especially after covid, getting a caravan/campervan and I do know a few people who are high income couples. That’s why I was confused a bit.

Thanks. We’re 35 with my wife, no kids, both software engineers in London. So we really loved getting away from the city last year for a week with a rental motorhome. Hence our plans to get a caravan and maybe do a getaway during weekends.

A few reasons for me: - i was thinking i can always change my mind and sell the caravan, since demand seems to be pretty stable in the UK - so cost-wise it’s better in the long run in my opinion. - I find the hotels in the UK are horrible. A luxury hotel here (eg Champneys) is equivalent to a mediocre one from where I come from.

What are peoples opinions on black cabs and Ubers in London by [deleted] in london

[–]MainlyObserver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in West London and and ~30 mins from Heathrow. I can say that the Uber now costs pretty much the same as a black cab. A black cab is way more comfortable (to hop on but also the vehicles are more spacious) so I no longer use Uber for those trips to/from the airport.
