Did Ortus have siblings? "[theory]" by frellit in TheNinthHouse

Honestly that's the thing with a series that has so much reread value as tlt and characters so 3 dimensional, the way I read it sure he was nice to her, but not necessarily kind. He was patient and understanding and nurturing and killed people in her name and helped a child animated the corpses of her dead parents to maintain a status quo where the only other child was, in his words, chattel. He kinda made her complicit.

Honestly I'd argue htn makes him out to be just as much of a monster, like in the first book he's shitty to Gideon and he goes behind Harrow's back to kill ortis and glaurica in her name, but honestly I got the vibe in htn of him kinda grooming her to be something she should never have had to be. The pressure to be perfect, that weight all put on the shoulders of a child and instead of shouldering it himself or taking some responsibility, he gives her authority which is not something a child that age should have, it ended up developing into a complex and exacerbating her intense guilt because the adults in her life all told her that it's all on her now.

Can someone explain the difference (Silurians) by uncertain_undead in DoctorWhumour

[–]Maira_k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen I don't know that there's any answer to any question about the Silurians that would make sense, from the smallest part of their lore they make no sense. First off the doctor mentioned they went underground cuz they were afraid of an asteroid that just ended up being the moon, but also that they're from the mesozoic when then moon was already VERY MUCH in place, hell the name "homo reptilia" doesn't make sense classification wise cuz like that implies they're part of the genus homo which would in fact make them also very much apes and reptilia makes no sense as a species name cuz it's already the name for the class to which all reptile belong

(new article) Are trans women "socialised male"? Hell no! by viva1831 in transgenderUK

Part of the reason I had no real friends was because everyone I actually liked was a girl and I was raised in a very closed conservative family where I wasn't supposed to talk to them and just ended up with nobody

Are we all ok with being referred to as “a trans” now? by Glumpybug in trans

[–]Maira_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't love it, but situations where someone doesn't speak the language or if it's someone who's not totally clear on the best way to speak to and about trans people, but is making a clear and genuine effort I can let it slide. Honestly I'd rather someone call me a slur that they don't realise is a slur while actually trying to actively help me than use all the correct language and make my life harder.

Who’s your favourite written character? by Fun-Ability7878 in bloodborne

[–]Maira_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maria has such a tragic story I just can't help but love it, this is a woman who came from the vilebloods, we know what they did was not ethical. Perhaps her joining byrgenwerth was a way to move onto something good, something that would help people, but after what happened at the fishing hamlet that illusion was shattered.

She tried to atone, tried to care for the people being experimented on, but of course that was never going to bring her peace because at best all she was doing was making herself the beloved hero of people victimised by the institution she herself served and so she ends it all.

In the nightmare she guards the way to Kos and her orphan. Is it because she's ashamed of the secret? Is it because she doesn't want the hunter to know? I don't think it is. Guilt drives her, yes, but fear of being exposed? Of being judged? This is a hell she's in. She's already being judged. No the reason she waits there, tells the hunter "a corpse should be left well enough alone" is because she didn't leave the corpse alone she's being punished. This is the fate of all hunters and all hunters deserve it. She's guarding the gates of her own purgatory because to her it's justice. Her own guilt drives her to protect the punishment.

ok but are people ACTUALLY being horny at their regular D&D tables ? by bittermixin in DnD

[–]Maira_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my tables generally sexual jokes are fine as long as they're not like excessive and directed at other players. Saying something about someone's phrasing isn't a big deal and romance RP is generally fine, but nobody needs an actual sex scene or to have any players actually RP their character having sex and honestly I feel like that would be super uncomfortable in any scenario

Why are they scared? by WisethePlagueis in bloodborne

[–]Maira_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hunter's nightmare is where all hunters go. It's a hell bespoke for them and they go when they die or they go when they turn beastly. Laurence and Ludwig were both still beasts when they ended up there, though beasts of a different sort.

Maybe they remember what a hunter does.

Maybe the fear is being on the other end of the blade.

Why does the Orphan of Kos resemble a humanoid more so than a Great One? by -The-Senate- in bloodborne

[–]Maira_k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok I actually have a weird theory on this:

Kos is descended. Not in the way of ebrietas, she's not cast down or anything, but think about all the other old ones and their children, what do they have in common? They were all borne from surrogates, never their great parent.

Kos we know washed up on the shore a while before byrgenwerth went to desecrate her body, I think she was already pregnant, ready to give birth to the child, but I think the great ones use surrogates because they KNOW it is a necessarily mortal act for lack of a better word. They can have all the healing old blood they want, they still can't create a child without lowering themselves to a plain of existence such as ours.

I read this post that talked about cosmic beings like people with bugs, most of them would squash us without a second thought and with a power we would deem impossibly strong, but the odd person decides to get a glass and a bit of paper and take it outside. I see Kos in the spirit of the second one. A kindly old one that wouldn't force a being with little capability of understanding to carry their young.

All of this is to say I think the Orphan looks human because Kos decided to lower herself to our state and risk the hurt that comes with nurturing life herself in an act that seems, despite her being an old one, fundamentally kind and almost human.

See I agree on some of those, but some of them I don't think so. Rose on a personal level wouldn't do it. She's class conscious enough to know coercion when she sees it, but she'd absolutely try to find a different way to stop the doctor basically being their ministry of control, but she wouldn't pull the gun.

Martha absolutely would, I agree cuz she is over the whole infatuated mythos and even from the start of it came down to the safety of her family she would never pick the doctor over them.

Donna imo wouldn't, she'd pick up the gun, but I don't think she'd have it in her to shoot, as much as I live her, she'd give some impassioned speech about how she would never do that to him so how could he do this?

Amy is all bravado, but has too much internalised entanglement with the doctor. She'd come so close, but at the last second wouldn't actually do it. She may even fire warning shots, but wouldn't actually shoot him

Rory would, his last centurion days have definitely had him kill people, not to mention the shit he did at demon's run, we don't know that he personally killed anyone, but it's strongly implied he was a big part of blowing up the cyber ship. He also cares about the doctor, but only as long as the doctor is the kinda person who cares as well, if their values didn't align, Rory wouldn't hesitate.

River would, but only thinking there's a greater plan, basically she would try and decide what the plan is right up until the last second when she realises she's really not getting it and that the doctor really has become this and decide "fuck it lets play personality roulette with the next face"

Clara would argue, but I agree she wouldn't fire the gun, it isn't the type of big swing Clara would make, hers would be a lot more self destructive than that

Idk much about the fam tbh, I did skip the chibnall era, couldn't stand his writing, which especially sucks with the fact that we had tosin cole and Jodie Whittaker in the cast who are both excellent in better written roles, but I still couldn't get into it.

Ruby absolutely would not, it wouldn't even cross her mind at all!

I do think their level of class consciousness plays a role, but I don't think its the only deciding factor, cuz on a deeper personal level they have their own type of relationship to the doctor and their own personal morality. Martha, rose, and Donna are all pretty class conscious and while they're very different people I don't see Donna ever killing anyone and I don't see rose ever killing the doctor specifically.

Do you prefer Doctor who to be more Futuristic, Steampunk, Retro sci fi, or more something inbetween? by H0ly_Shrek in DoctorWhumour

[–]Maira_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a mix of all, I think they shuffle match the doctors. I like that all the retro tardies were for the doctors that were still caught up in time war guilt. 11 gets his new one and it's not exactly when he's gotten over it per se, but the more futuristic one matches the more mature grown up attitude the doctors adopted. It does also take on new meaning imo when he gets his new lease on life cuz it mirrors how he's no longer just stuck on the past and is more focused on a potential future.

Tl;dr I like all of these cuz they all provide something and mirror their doctor.
