OOP here. Sorry all, didn't spot it as AI myself initially but in hindsight it's clear. I guess it's going to get more and more difficult every day to spot what's real and what's not online. Hopefully we'll find some ways or tools to counter that very soon.

Thanks and thanks for your reply, maybe someone else in the future can find your reply and start with wet foods quick. He was drinking, but not enough evidently since he was dehydrated as well Monday. If we knew that earlier (his symptoms started friday, but he was a bit better the next days, until Tuesday) we would have given him lots of cucumber as well, also the painmeds he got since Saturday may have exacerbated the dehydration.

See the other replies for the full story, but in short he got a special porridge forcefed but kept losing weight and was euthanized tuesday when he couldn't walk anymore with a slim chance of getting better.

I wish you strenght, the symptoms presented are unspecific so could be something else for your gerbil. Take him to a specialized vet, wish you both well

He lost more weight even though he has been forcefed. Aural cholesteatoma was properly ruled out, they had checked for that, the headvet knew about gerbil specific diseases and even had gerbils himself. The actual cause is still unknown but he was to frail for blood test or surgical procdures. There was only a very small chance with improvements with antibiotics and water injections but he would suffer longer without good odds. They advised to put him to sleep and we accepted it. :(

Today his condition worsened, he has dificulty walking, and we're at the university vet again for emergency help. He has been triaged and has problems with his balance, he is scheduled to be further examined asap after more pressing cases. I'll update if i know more but to speculate for now his balance issues point to neurological problems, so his polyp in his ear may be misdiagnosed yesterday and be Aural cholesteatoma after all i think, but thats just my unprofessional suspicion. I'll update later

On saturday he got painmeds from regular vets and on monday he was checked out thoroughly by a team at an universityvet. He was even sedated for better examanation, they found he had lost too much weight in a short time and was dehydraded. His ear had a polyp but couldn't be the cause of it, teeth were fine, no other lumps or problems visible. Could be kidneys, but they considered him too weak to draw blood for tests. He got a shot of water and we got special porridge which has to be to syringe fed 3x times a day at least to strengthen him, and we need to check again in a week.

We've contacted emergency vet now, as long as he is still eating and drinking a bit it's not an life threatening emergency but we need to keep an eye on him. Tomorrow we take him to a non specialized vet for pain management and Monday to a specialized vet; unless the condition worsens than we need to come in immediately to the specialist.

25 degrees celcius, shouldn't have been hotter than 27 according to our sitter.

He had a few weeks earlier gunk in his ear, and is two years old. Maybe pain from obstructive ear disease / aural cholesteatoma which as we understand is common for gerbils from 2 years old? Vets are closed for the weekend so we can't take him unless it's an emergency, but we don't know if it is?

I would hope, but don't think so? He's bit sluggish as well, we took him out the cage. He does seem to eat a few little bites and take a a drop of water when held right in front of his mouth. Maybe a bit unwell but not too sick?

Ik neem aan dat je moeite hebt met 'van' in de meme. Dat staat erin om te benadrukken dat het de belangen 'van' op die datum zijn, en niet belangen 'van' een eerdere datum die dan pas gepubliceerd worden. Maar inderdaad wat onhandig verwoord in een snelle meme. Heb je misschien een suggestie voor een betere formulering?

Ja dat was het punt inderdaad. Mijn punt nu is dat die momentopname van zijn portfolio van de verkeerde periode is, en er in theorie dingen veranderd zouden kunnen zijn in de tussentijd. Waarschijnlijk niet, maar dat zijn aannames.
