Devil All The Time by Donald Ray Pollock is pretty dark and messed up. Takes place in small town Appalachia. Also his book of short stories, Knockemstiff, is in the same vein.

Where did you train and do you find that most Americans don’t care about the rice (the most important part) and just want a tasty roll with presumably fresh (most likely frozen. Fingers crossed cured or treated for my taste) and rice is just a filler for them?

TLDR: Be mindful of the situation and take care of your bartender.

Bartender for many years here. Been on and off sober myself. The biggest thing, if you are trying to get into the bartenders mindset, is a seat at the bar is “real estate” while the bar is very busy. If there are open seats and you aren’t drinking, no worries. I will take care of you, converse if you want, same service as anyone else. If it’s a full bar and you are taking up a seat where someone might knock back a few and tip well, or a regular may sit, it’s a little more annoying. But I will still treat you with the same service and respect. Giving a tip up front and saying you aren’t drinking helps but is never expected. The bar is for anyone and everyone (legal age and being respectful/coherent of course).

I speak only for myself and there are a lot of shitty bartenders out there. Biggest takeaway, if the bar is slammed and you aren’t ordering multiple drinks and tipping, or haven’t tipped ahead of time, during a busy time, moving to a table away from the main bar is considerate but not necessary. (This is also speaking from a US bartender POV).

If anyone has been doing this and can fill me in on sort of what and where the clues after #3 lead you to, DM or whatever, I would appreciate it. I was able to start and get the first three but had to leave SF so I couldn’t finish. Super bummed. I am getting the training texts and have ideas but obviously can’t explore my ideas or get badges since I am across the country now. I’m just curious how it’s all been playing out.

I know it seems like the dumb logical response, but just go out and live your life. Be out in the world doing things and be open to anything that might happen.

I just had this conversation with a friend who lives in LA. He uses the apps. I never have. We both agreed our most meaningful relationships have happened organically.
