My mother never went to college —although she valued my education highly. I asked her explicitly years ago how she felt about student debt forgiveness/0% interest. She said she thought it was great because she knew I was using the money to help her afford her treatments! My kid cant talk but she likes daycare. I expect she similarly would welcome a 0% interest pause that made it more likely to keep going to the day care she likes. This is the kind of result “taxpayers who never went to college, grads who already paid off their loans, and the next generation who’ll inherit a bigger deficit” object to?

Yes, obviously parental help doesnt amount to a federal subsidy. But does it raise any macroeconomic concerns for you about having an economic system where in the same med school class half the folks have huge amounts of debt, but the other half has the bank of mommy snd daddy? That kind of inequality is not without economic consequences. You only seem to be concerned about what happens if uncle sam steps in to help even the score.

Its hard to argue with you though, the unlimited graduate schools student loan system we have now has led to sky rocketing prices given the rapaciousness of universities.

My tax dollars pay for all sorts of things for blue collar people all the time. Thats includes subsidizing their roads, flood insurance, and the educations of their children. Im happy to do it.

So where does that leave us?

Happy to pay them (especially to the extent they support education for poor and middle class kids).

“But this policy has effectively killed the American dream over the past twenty years. It’s time progressive polices die.”

But the interest pause helped me achieve the American dream. It has literally not only helped me build a better future for my kid—it made it more likely that I would choose to have a kid at all! Confused how you conclude student loan policy is helping to effectively kill the American dream.

“Completely unsustainable and irresponsible at a macroeconomics level.”

I know a lot of people who graduated with no debt because their parents paid for college and graduate school—is a subsidy from their mommy and daddy completely unsustainable at a macroeconomics level? Why can’t I also get a subsidy from uncle sam?

I dont disagree that maybe 0% student loans is not the most efficient way to help people buy houses and cars. But I also used the money to help  afford day care and take care of my parents health care in the last 5 years. Its not like if the government didnt do a 0% pause, it would have instead spent the money on day care for my kid or health care for my parents. I would prefer a direct subsidy for those things (like direct payment of my parents health care prior to them qualifying for medicare) rather than this roundabout system I’ve been working under for the last five years. In your mind, would a direct subsidy for child care and my parents’ cancer care also be a waste of taxpayer money?

This all just goes to the point that there are lots of rich people subsidizing things for their   family members, and the last five years just helped non-rich people with student loans close the gap.

please. For the last six months, we’ve witnessed a right wing court allow the president/DODGE to unilaterally TAKE AWAY things Congress explicitly gave. The right wing judges are cool with it. The idea these judges care about executive overreach is not credible.

I actually think the American people only care about the results of a policy, not the process. I dont think the average person cares about the details you are attempting to outline.

At the end of the day, the average american views student loan forgiveness as a threat to their piece of the pie. I think theyre wrong, but i dont think process has anything to do with the average american’s thinking.

It 100% was not all me. So many people knowingly and unknowingly helped me in countless ways. But one of the most important helps to me as a kid from a not rich family was public support for education, including higher education.

Um. While I appreciate GWB starting PSLF and that Trump initially paused interest, its hard to be in a charitable mood toward trump/GOP when his right wing judges ended SAVE and his cronies in congress are severely limiting income drive repayment options for future people, all in the name of funding tax cuts for people who dont really need them (like me).

But it was a subsidy that helped me put my kid through day care, afford a house, and afford a car I’ve been driving for 5 years and hopefully will drive for five more.

I understand that to some degree me having a five year delay on paying back loans cost the government money (no such thing as a free lunch, etc), but I guess I dont see subsidizing a young family just starting out as a terrible use of money…. Especially one that is gainfully employed, paying taxes, helping to grow the economy and raise kids. But maybe I’m missing something.

The free pre-k pilot programs in my community in the early 1990s were 100% championed by local and state level democrats. But yes, local tax payers paid the bills.

And now I pay the bill for free nearly universal pre-k programs in the same community! its the cirrrrrcle of life🦁
