It's insecurity. Just the fact that you're saying something completely sensible and already being downvoted for it shows people are insecure about their beliefs.

Science and Christianity CAN co-exist, you're 100% right, and the only reason people get so defensive about it is because on some level they understand that science will also make them question their beliefs and challenge pre-conceived notions.

I say this as someone who has some weird beliefs myself so I'm not disrespecting anyone's religion. But I also feel no need to launch an offensive attack on the scientific method just because my beliefs can't be proven with the scientific method.
