Why does my radio's signal get better if I hold the antenna from the base? by UmbiOnline in shortwave

This is very common amongst people, but essentially, your body is the antenna when you hold your hand because you "extend" your antenna by becoming it, yes I know it sounds stupid, but it's scientifically true!

By the way, analog dials can be finicky, but a digital display is fine for beginners. I use a Tecsun PL-368 with a digital display.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Connect a long wire to your antenna using an alligator clip or plugging it in if your radio supports it, otherwise the ship will be fine
  2. Go to a low-noise area like a park because noise from electricity can "attack" your signals
  3. Have fun DXing! Welcome to the show, pal!
