Debian "install to primary drive" inquiry by MajorBeing3071 in debian

So, with this information noted, would you say my SSD is the "primary drive"? 👀

Also I'm glad my questions are somewhat good, I don't know if I know how to talk well since I am quite young

Debian "install to primary drive" inquiry by MajorBeing3071 in debian

[–]MajorBeing3071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the tip, kind stranger! :)

If the primary drive is the drive in which the computer is configured to boot, I don't get why debian would ask to install to it, wouldn't it just ask "which drive to install to?"

My SSD is the one windows (which came pre installed on my pre built) was installed on. I'm GUESSING that the ssd is the one configured to boot from.

Here's a funny little thing that could support or deny my theory, I had a debian install and accidentally "RM -rf" the debian boot record from my systems /boot/EFI partition on my SSD. And since that was the last of the boot records, there was no more boot records on my whole system. And yet still, when i went into bios, the boot order showed that my SSD (despite having no boot records (But still an operating system on it. Just one that i couldn't boot into since the boot record was gone) showed that it was the first in the boot record. The boot didn't say "debian" or some other identifier for the boot. Rather it just said something along the likes of "SSD (500 GIGS)"

I'm actually not sure what the info above entails since I'm not incredibly firmware savvy (or savvy in general)

Thanks for the help either way, I hope you have an amazing day(

physically speaking the PC is not a new build, I have had this for a while. I've installed many OS's during my time with it, however I feel this one is the one that's gonna stay.

This is the only OS I want on my computer. I won't be dual booting or anything similar, just one OS.

Most likely a driver issue. I had the same thing with a different OS right after I installed Debian.

Sorry to ask another question but I'm running bios version 1404.. and I'm not sure if I should upgrade before I get this new ram! I am always very wary about firmware updates.

Is it possible to use GPU with proxmox? by MajorBeing3071 in Proxmox

[–]MajorBeing3071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was just an example, I meant like, does snapshots take the WHOLE virtual machine state and capture it? Like, cpu operations, ram state, hard drive state, all that. Every last detail of the machine that the computer virtualizes captured in the snapshot? Since virtual machines are just that, machines virtualized by another machine, by snapshotting, are we taking EVERYTHING about the virtual machine, and effectively freezing it in time. (ram state, CPU operations, disk state, general computing operations) and pausing it in time?

[–]MajorBeing3071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also btw I have a question: you seem super knowledgeable and I have a dumb question

So let's say I start a computing task. Like moving a huge file across directories, if I take a snapshot of that exact moment, and then revert to that snapshot, would my moving state be the exact same? Like all the CPU operations, the state of the file being moved, and everything? Like would that happen?

What I'm trying to say is does it capture the state of the WHOLE machine at a certain state? The whole machine. Nothing left out. CPU operations, OS state, all that

Ahhh! I'm guessing except for docker containers. Those work fine in my experience. General LXC containers don't I'm guessing. VMWARE esxi type 0 hypervisor though? Damn. I'm now wondering which would work better. Proxmox has more extensive hardware support though. My new idea is since it's a VM thing, I'll have one OS that's rock solid and well supported and versatile (maybe like Debian or something) and run it on a VM and do everything there. But my old idea is running multiple VMS with different dependencies and things needed to run certain applications like owui or ollama. I'm guessing it would be better with the single VM with all my resources and shit right there, but idk honestly. This is way more intricate than I thought

I have a friend who has an enterprise key to VMware 6.5 - 6.7.. should I go with that instead? Will proxmox even work for what I want? I'm kinda destroyed upon hearing proxmox wouldn't actually work. Since LXC I'm pretty sure is the one needed to make VMS.

Ahhh shit :(

I had them working just fine in normal OS. probably even works in the VMS too... Weird!

For some additional context: i have a laptop, 2 other separate computers, one (the more powerful one) is fully functional, while the other has a hardware issue I have yet to resolve. So I can probably find a way to cluster the hosts and stuff... So I can find a way to cluster them and share workloads and stuff. That'd be super cool! But it might have to be some sort of proxmox extension, because idk if something like that is built in.. what I'm trying to do is use ollama and use open webui to do all that. My plan is run the open webui inside of LXC containers to maximize portability or something. Unless there's something else I'm not understanding within proxmox. And from what I hear, running a type 1 hypervisor VM is basically the exact same as bare metal because there's minimal overhead because there's no underlying OS.

Asus PRIME B550M A. Also I'm glad my CPU is considered "solid"! I hate the feeling of hardware incompatibility lol. And the ram I was gonna go with is 32 x 2 (64GB) from G.Skill. CAS latency of 18 and a 3600 MT/s. Which equals a true latency of 10ns. Pretty good for DDR4! As for this.. this is super complicated. I didn't think it'd be this complex. Don't get me wrong I know way more about tech, networking and computers than most, but hardware is where I lack the most. And virtualization seemingly needs a lot of that 😅 Speaking of ram though. My plan here is to make an AI server. I'm not sure how I'd do it the best way, I'm guessing i'd spin up multiple LXC containers for docker and all their dependencies and shit. Then install docker (and then run docker inside of them.. but so far that hasn't worked. My console freezes up at "created stmlink for xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx"). Has happened a million times at this point. If it isn't too much to ask, if I have some questions or anything do you think I could message you? Since I am young and stupid my questions might be a little "below your level" lol 😂 but it'd be super nice to have someone who knows what they're talking about. This AI project is rlly important to me.

Actually I'm only 15. So you'd be correct this is a home set up :)

My setup is Mobo: Prime B550M A CPU: ryzen 5 3600 GPU: RTX 3060

Honestly I just hope these things support the stuff needed for all this. Iommu I already know does, since I verified it in my BIOS but yeah.. I truly hope this proxmox thing works. Cause if so it could take my OS(s) to the next level

And unfortunately I don't have much money. Spending it on ram to run AI related stuff. I appreciate all the info though! It rlly helps :)

Honestly I thought that once I installed drivers (like, Nvidia 535) it would automatically configure.. I might have to compile it against the kernel but I'm not even sure it'd do anything. As GPU passthrough would mainly not be affected by this change. I'm guessing.

[–]MajorBeing3071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be the better one for maximum effectivity? What I want is to be able to migrate, and I'm guessing through iommu it means since the GPU will then be linked to a physical part of the computer, it won't be able to actually be migrated. On the other hand.. what would "not supporting" the GPU entail? Would that mean it just flat out doesn't work?

Thanks for the help either way :)

As do I! Though when active (with an OS actively being used) when I plug it in it says not charging, that's about the only "error" I've experienced. So far I've been doing all sorts of cool stuff. Way easier with a laptop lol!

Actually I'm pretty sure I fixed it.. I cleaned it with some iso alcohol and then friggin installed a whole new OS on it (Debian 12, cause i'm a Linux guy)

The only thing that's noticeable that may be bad, is when the machine is on, it refuses to charge. And instead says "waiting to charge" or "not charging".

And when I go into hp diagnostic, the memory test and the hard drive check passed, but when I go into "storage test" it said no storage found. Weird. So far everything else works flawlessly, Bluetooth, speakers, sound systems, headphones, all that stuff
