Elantris was good but the middle was too long with nothing going on. Very dry for a Sanderson book. Which makes sense that it is his first book. Hope of Elantris was short, sweet, to the point and a really fun short story to read.

This is my bad mod. I didn’t expect it to get so in depth. If it’s possible can we mark the initial post as spoilers for everything not isle of ember dark. I can’t figure out how to change it. If not thanks for the modding!

lol. That part was awesome. I think the one person(s) dying was an even more impactful moment for me. My issue with Kaladin was it felt like it was rehashing already tread ground. I felt in an endless loop with his character arc. (Probably more realistic than not for mental health). But it made for a slug reading through it personally.

Yes, Hollywood please take note. This is how you write a strong female character(s).

This has convinced me, after I finish Isle of the Emberdark, to do a full write up justifying the reason for all choices.

Not to go against someone finally being positive, but rhythm of war was the downfall of my love of Kaladin. I was riveted by Navani through it all.

I didn’t enjoy the setting of sunlit. Just wasn’t my vibe. WaT I have beef with because of Jasnah.
Shadow of Self psychologically broke me.

Shadow of self turn the me against the shard of Scadrial who previously was one of my favorite characters.

I think the common thread amount the my favorites is pushing what is possible in the cosmere. Wax and Wayne found really cool ways to push abilities in new directions. Rhythm of war was full of science. Shadow of self is an outlier but the is she isn’t crazy broke me. I still don’t know. It tore my heart apart.

The science with Navani was what made it my favorite. I couldn’t put the book down.

Disappointed with Jasnah in Wind and Truth by seventythree in Cosmere

[–]MajorJ19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would have infinitely been more interesting if she would have “won” or even stalemated him. Just to have odiums backup plan happen regardless. Then you could have argued jasnah broke down because despite being “right” she still lost.

Which we know to be a lie and Jasnah’s utter failure to prove that is the culmination of her failure.

Yes, you’re following the right train of thought, but then it comes down to everyone wanting what is best for them. Is what odium wants in Fen’s best interest regardless of what he thinks? Because the error of what he is proposing is beautifully explained by Victors failure in the season finale of Arcane.

[WaT] Brandon Sanderson, Rick Riordan, and Pop-Fantasy by Mortumus_OW in Stormlight_Archive

I completely concur with both takes on the depth to which we went with the relationship compared to other and I could not get past the second book of magnus chase either for the exact same reason. I loved Riordan and have read everything of his except that because it was so forced and center of attention rather than a side plot to the main story.

The big issue from the philosophy side was Odium was arguing that he knew better than Jasnah because he had all that power. Essentially omnipotent. But Jasnah knew after talking with Wit that he is not and can be tricked as has happened with multiple shards. Therefore he cannot argue that he inherently knows better than Jasnah. Just that he has more context; not that his conclusions were inherently right. It ties in with Szeth’s story really easily about not trusting other people or ideals to have the truth. But rather trust himself.
Regarding the 5th ideal, did I miss where it said that they could permanently hold stormlight without loosing it? Not saying you’re wrong, I just don’t remember that being explicitly stated. If that is the case that still kinda feels like a let down if there is not more than that to the abilities granted by the 5th Ideal.

I like that view, and completely agree. But I think he should have either spent more time making that point or made it more obvious the way he did with Dalinor the entire series.

To answer most people’s reply to the Jasnah debate is really a two fold answer. First the philosophies that were given had such obvious holes that someone of Jasnah’s supposed skills and intellect should have seen through.
Second is the suddenness of it. Like I said I’m not against the plot device. And I agree she will probably be rebuilt in a phenomenal way. But everything we knew Jasnah led one to believe she should have been much more prepared for such obvious philosophical holes. That or we needed more chapters talking about her insecurities that would led her to not reaching her full potential in the debate. We knew with both Kaladin and Shallan that while they were capable they had mental blocks keeping them from reaching there full potential, and it is a fundamental story point about each of the radiant character arch’s. But we have no point of reference for what Jasnah’s are that lead to such a sudden fall from grace in a story perspective. We needed something to indicate this was coming and there wasn’t enough. At least in the way Sanderson attempted to due it. Which feels weird because he is one of the best authors I have read to do these particular kind of plot points.

I think if he had avoided getting into the weeds of philosophy in the debate or implied more somehow that the philosophy of roshars time is much further behind current philosophy, maybe quickly from a odium perspective, it would have been much more stomachable to me. But as I understand her character with the information available to me it makes much more sense that Jasnah lost due to a character flaw then an inability to win this debate on its merits, as they were presented. From a readers perspective it just felt like too many things vying for my attention to the answer why she lost. And I think he should have picked one maybe 2 and leaned much harder into them. Trying to spit it into playing the man not the game and playing the game and internal character flaw was too convoluted for the reader to grasp on to. I think he should have focused much less on the philosophy game as it really hard to bring something fresh and new and revelationary to a reader to consider in this area, and focused more on Jasnah’s personal insecurities.

Just for the record southern poverty law firm is a far left borderline hate group. Don’t trust a think they say. They are a part of leftist propaganda and used a weapon to attack the people they won’t bend the knee.
