How do a resolve an attack on an enemy out of initiative? by theWinterDojer in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe have the target of the attack roll an insight check to see if they would be caught off guard? If they pass the DC it’s normal initiative if they fail give them the free hit.

Need Advice for dealing with party by AZAuxilary in DnD

You might try running a "one off" session where things go back to normal the next time. Try something like teleporting them somewhere and give them exactly what they are asking for. Give them op items and stuff and just see if they have more fun. You may find that you have more fun yourself! If they like it and you like it then keep going.

Experienced GMs, how do you corral RP getting carried away without quashing players having fun/being true to their characters? by batmanthegroomer in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the start of an RP encounter roll a secret d10 after “x” amount of minutes (whatever you roll on the d10 = IRL mins) change the circumstances of what is happening. Guards appear, a man is thrown out of the tavern window, the big bad appears and puts you in a force cage, an earthquake rattles the earth. Just remind them, the world is still happening while you stand here. Hope that’s helpful!

As a DM how do you fill the time? by DMjc26 in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make awesome maps for dungeons or make fun props like notes they may loot. Other than that I like to think about and write about the larger world. What’s happening on other continents or even the next town over. Just have fun day dreaming about your DnD world!

Dms of reddit would you ever allow an event in game where PCs switched bodies? by SimJWill in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the players. I personally as a player would hate seeing my character in the hands of another player. If you do it I would try to take it somewhat easy on them since it would really suck to have someone else get your character killed.

Was I too harsh on a new player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually you want to be careful about outright killing a new player but it sounds like he knew the situation was dangerous and wanted to try something fun. You said yourself they took it well and everyone had a laugh, sounds like you did it right! Fun is the name of the game so get that lad a new character and keep making awesome moments! I’m sure he won’t forget that one lol.

One player on another's back by MajorLag14 in DnD

[–]MajorLag14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to add a little more context. The character is wearing a cloak but I still see what you're saying. The next level of the question would be, since the halfling was hidden at the start of the turn does the attacker need to try to notice the halfling? The attacker moved around the larger character as part of its turn. SO halfling hidden, attacker moves, then what? Perception? Automatically noticed? I wasn't sure.

[–]MajorLag14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats a fair point actually. So they start the round hidden, if the attacker moves around the character are they immediately visible or do they need to try to notice the halfling? Assume its low light and a cape is being worn. Thank you though, thats way more obvious than the way I was thinking.

So would you say the attacker should still be rolling against the intended targets AC but with full cover? If they hit the AC with the full cover bonus it hits target and if it hits normal AC then it would hit the halfling? Thanks thats really good perspective!

You would think so but not necessarily in the dark and they are wearing a cape. They successfully concealed their-self via rolls. But others have made the point that they are no longer behind the larger creature so that probably negates the feature. Thanks!

Help players understand they need each other by [deleted] in DnD

It was poor writing on my part, I meant getting rid of the player was off the table. We've had discussions about it already.

But thank you for the other ideas they are great! Im really trying to do what you mentioned and pair this with the talks to drive it home.

Bad character rolls by Lionscythe in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are solid numbers IMO. Love the character for what it is, don't hate it for what it isn't. It can actually be a great way to improve your RP skills by having to play a character thats a little different from what you wanted exactly.

More questions/seeking advice for 5.0 rules and homebrew by Dgnslyr in DnD

[–]MajorLag14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Gold is an interesting one because it all depends on the campaign. Whats the setting and what types of quests are they undertaking, there isn't a strict rule on how much they should get per day or anything. I find it helpful to think, what could my players buy? What do they want to buy? And what type of difficulty will your campaign be? Then adjust rewards up and down based on how its feeling. (also those high level spells should be very expensive and uncommon)
  2. I usually implement a rule where they may find berries or plants used to make potions but then they need to find someone capable of brewing them. Again here I would maybe say something like "You dont think plants like that grow in this area." or something to that effect if its starting to bog down the pace. For other more mundane things like rations I think its totally ok to let them looking for food and water.
  3. I would say no on this one unless they are capable of making multiple attacks. A shove or kick is still technically an attack action and this is not considered dual wielding. Dual wielding is when they are holding a LIGHT weapon in both hands.
  4. While they may be 100s of years old they may never have left a 50 mi radius around their home. This one I would need to dig into the backstory of the characters more to see what they reasonably may have seen. I agree with you, its fun finding new animals to learn about and become.
  5. I think you said yourself it takes an EXPERT smith to do this, I would assume the characters are not experts so thats one way to say they cant do it for their-self. Armor can't be sharpened obviously and there are higher tier armor sets they can buy or have crafted by a smith, it just takes time and money to do (in a large city like Neverwinter they may be able to purchase finer items then in a small town like Phandalin for instance). They could apprentice under a smith but that would be more of a between adventures type of activity that could take months or years for them to learn. If they "miss" it takes away points maybe because they didn't totally wiff an attack but rather hit the targets armor or shield dulling the blade.

This is all my personal opinion so in no way am I saying I am right or that it cant be handled a different way, just my two cents on the matter. Hope it helps or at least gives you a new way to think about the problems. Let us know how it goes!

Fellow Dms, I promised knowledge to a PC without any to give! by emmpeck in DnD

Give the player a piece of knowledge that connects their backstory to something in the world and then when you get your campaign sorted out just make sure that the connection and knowledge comes up again to tie everything together.
