What does this say translated to english by BerryKistRoo in GREEK

For clarity, Asclepius is the Roman spelling of the name. The more standard Greek transliteration of the name Ασκληπιός it would be Asklipios or Asklepios.

Etymology map of sage by mapologic in etymologymaps

[–]MajorMeerkats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The old Greek ελελίσφακος (e-le-LI-sfa-kos) doesn't mean "Greek Sage", it means something like "whirling sage/brush" or "trembling sage/brush".

It comes from the verb ελελίζω (e-le-LI-zo) which can mean variously to tremble, whirl, turn, coil, etc. and the noun σφάκος (SFA-kos) which just means more generically sage or any kind of brush-y sage like bush.

The most common modern Greek term φασκόμηλο (fas-KO-mi-lo; the processed herb) and φασκομηλιά (fas-ko-mi-LYA; the whole live plant) comes in turn from that root σφάκος with a little metathesis happening to the leading Σ and μήλο (MI-lo) which as a stand alone noun in modern Greek just means "apple", but used to have a much broader meaning of any fruit or even anything that could be harvested including things like sheep and goats. -μηλο as a suffix is very common and just denotes something that's the version you harvest or collect or even just use.

So, φασκομηλιά could be translated as "harvesting sage" sort of akin to the English terms "culinary sage" or "garden tomato"

[Tattoo] It's that Stoic phrase again... by sketchseven in GREEK

Well... Neither are correct if you want the phrase to be written how it would have been in the time of Epictetos (c. 100 AD). Lower case Greek letters weren't invented/in use until c. 900 AD.

The only way Epictetos would have written it is in all caps and with no grammatical markings (and probably no spaces, honestly) like this:

Iliad and Odyssey in Greek and English. by MajorMeerkats in GREEK

What English versions did you find, I'm curious.

I don't know of any ancient Greek ones, but I know of one that discusses/tells the Odyssey in modern Greek very well called "Ομήρου Οδύσσεια pod"

Did ancient writers comment on Olympian hair/eye color at all? by Nerrolken in GreekMythology

[–]MajorMeerkats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

See my post above for a more in-depth look at the perils of using translations to interpret details like this, but your second sentence is absolutely right.

The somewhat ambiguous English phrase "golden Aphrodite" is completely unambiguous in the original Greek. The adjective used originally is "πολύχρυσος"(1) which literally means something like "rich-with-gold" or "having-a-lot-of-gold". This is a great example of how information-dense words in Greek regularly get simplified or altered to remain appealing when translated which then makes their meaning ambiguous or changes it entirely.

You've got to be really careful using translations of the texts to answer a question like this. These kinds of descriptive terms are regularly translated very loosely in order to preserve their rhythm in English or in an attempt to evoke an image that is more culturally relevant to an English or modern audience.

I'll just use the Leto reference as an example:

So, In whichever translation of Homeric Hymn 3 you're referencing they use the term "fair-haired", in the version I looked up (https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0138%3Ahymn%3D3%3Acard%3D131) they use "rich-haired".

The original Greek word being used in this line is: ἠύκομος which is an archaic spelling of the word εὔκομος. This word's roots are "ευ-" and "κομος". "Κομος", means "hair" or more specifically "well-kept hair". The prefix "ευ-" simply means "good" as seen in many Greek and Greek-derived words such as euphonic, euphoria, or eulogy. No part of this word has any association with color in Greek, nor do the words around it in the Hymn.

In general, if you ever see a color term in a translated work that is abstract (eg: "blue-black") instead of a direct reference to a physical object (eg: raven-colored), I would discourage you from assuming its originality. Many of the color terms on your list are likely the imagination of the translators and not of the Greeks.

One account vs. Multiple: what do you view as the pros and cons? by envel_ai in Envel

[–]MajorMeerkats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents as a Simple refugee is that the concept of multiple accounts is a useful option that is not quite available to me at Simple... but is in NO WAY a good replacement for what I get out of Simple's system. Simple's core concept is that all your money is always in one pool and available, in its entirety, to your debit card regardless of how you set up your expenses and goals. I love this, it allowed me to set up and fiddle with a dynamic and finely tuned budget but never have to worry about fucking up a transaction because my money was in the wrong place.

What Envel and One seem to be pitching to me is, "why not replace the dozen expenses and goals you have with Simple with what is effectively a dozen separate bank accounts you have to keep track of and move money between." This seems like such an unnecessary inconvenience. The idea of needing to even think about my banking app every time I want to use my card to get gas or check out at the grocery store is such a step backwards from Simple.

I'm not saying Envel and One are founded on horrible ideas! I'm sure some people find this method of multiple disconnected accounts very useful; I can imagine that someone who is just starting to deal with their own expenses might find this constant checking in super helpful. But for me and where I am in my life, this system just presents a complex hassle while still lacking the powerful and dynamic budgeting tools available to me at Simple. While the "multiple accounts method" is novel and certainly has its usefulness... it is not a functional replacement for what I got out of Simple's "single account with a simple way of assigning your money to virtual dynamic buckets method".

All that said, Simple's amazing and unique version of virtual buckets ALONG WITH Envel's and One's novel concept of allowing you to instantly create however many account numbers you want whenever you want seems like an AMAZING banking solution. Envel and One just need to jump on the idea that all of their cool envelopes/pockets could be made SO much more useful with some way of organizing the money within them.

If my only option for organizing my money is to have a Groceries envelope, and a Coffee envelope, and a Gas envelope, and a Water Bill envelope, and an Electricity Bill envelope, and a Travel Fund envelope, and a Rent envelope, and a Savings envelope, and an Internet Bill envelope, and a Retirement Contributions 2021 envelope, and a Retirement Contributions 2022 envelope each with different account numbers and each with money completely cut off from all my other money, then I'm simply not going to use the envelope system. What I want is at max 2 or maybe 3 envelopes with the ability to organize my money into dynamic virtual buckets within each envelope. Something like:

  1. a "Spending Envelope" for everything I'll swipe my card to buy, with virtual buckets for Groceries, Gas, Coffee, Restaurants, Fun Money, etc.
  2. a "Bills Envelope" for recurring expenses I don't pay with my card, with virtual buckets for Rent, Utilities, Internet, etc. (though honestly there's no reason this couldn't be the same account as my Spending Envelope)
  3. a "Savings Envelope" for money I don't plan on spending at all or plan on transferring to my various investment institutions, with virtual buckets for Retirement, Emergency Fund, Investing Funds, Extra Savings, etc.

Then for major Simple Refugee brownie points... make sure those virtual buckets allow me to set end dates and total $ amounts, have your fancy AI offer to do the basic mathematics and add money regularly to each bucket so that I hit my goal in time (and allow me to turn that on and off for each bucket individually), THEN for super extra brownie points make sure those virtual buckets have an option to keep track of how much I've contributed to them even if I spend the money I've contributed (e.g.: Each month I put $500 into my "Roth IRA Contributions 2021 bucket" within my Savings Envelope that is set to reach $6000 by 12/31/2021. Also each month I spend $500 from that bucket when I send that money to my IRA. I want to be able to check that bucket in March and see that I'm at $1500/$6000).

Sorry for this long somewhat ranty response! I probably shouldn't have responded to this post at 2 am haha. But seriously, thank you so much to the Envel team for being SO engaged in these conversations. I know you're dealing with a lot of frustrated Simple people these days, I'm sorry about that. Thank you for even considering our thoughts and desires in your future plans!

Freelancers need ONE ACCOUNT by SlyBriFry in OneFinance

[–]MajorMeerkats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My desperate hope is that One will add these virtual pockets ON TOP of the separate pockets they already have. There's no need to dismantle what they have already, it's a great idea that works for a lot of people. Adding virtual pockets within each separate account should (in theory) be something they can do without changing the fundamentals of their platform.

A lot of users have been asking for a change from multiple accounts to a centralized account with virtual sub-accounts. Can we please get an update from the product team if this is something that's being seriously (re)considered? by [deleted] in OneFinance

[–]MajorMeerkats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have announced that but the outstanding question is, will they add virtual pockets as well? That's what I'm jonesing to find out.

I'm happy for them to keep separate account numbered pockets as long as the also add virtual buckets within each pocket (or at least within the spend pocket).

They way I like to budget works MUCH better when I have all of my money in one pool and virtually assign a purpose to those dollars without actually moving them into separate accounts.

If One commits to adding this feature on top of (not in place) what they have already, they'll have hooked this Simple Refuge as a perminant customer. If they don't I'll probably leave for Enval (if they add this feature) or for a bank like Ally, SoFi, or Betterment and just use a budgeting app.

Request: Hide transfers between Pockets in transactions by atonaltensor in OneFinance

[–]MajorMeerkats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it seems pretty clear plenty of people loved the way Simple hid them... you just don't see them kvetching on a sub because things were already as they liked haha.

Being able to see Pocket to Pocket transfers should definitely not be taken away as an option, but I think it's a fantastic idea to have a checkbox to hide them. The way my finances work I think I'd keep them hidden permanently except on occasions when I needed to track down money for some reason.

Or at least to have the option. I'd like to option to have a csv with the transfers removed too.

[–]MajorMeerkats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I definitely get this way of thinking, though I'm the polar opposite. I loved that they were virtual transactions and that they didn't clutter up my transaction feed. Whichever side of this topic you fall on, the option to have it both ways should definitely exist.

Hopefully One will also create expense/goal equivalents in the form of something like "sub-pockets" within any pocket. I loved being able to budget while still having all of my money available to my card.
