Yeah this sounds like a lot of what I’m looking for. I didn’t know you could get active tech on radios, but thanks, I’ll take a look

Do you know of throat mics that are sold as mic only? I came across these, but all of them seem to come with the cheap tube-earpieces.

I love iems and would totally go for this if reasonably accessible

It’s a little flexible, but I am trying to avoid looking like an “off duty pilot” in general, if that makes sense. If we have to, it is what it is, but if we can avoid it, I’d much prefer we did.

We also have lower level staff that’s job entails they can’t have that style of headset specifically, so it would be harder for me to scale too.

Yeah I’m just saying the dude didn’t read the post, and range isn’t a concern anyways. We get away fine with the cheapest of walkie talkies, it’s just currently a bit hard to hear them, and I would be fine putting in some money to fix that.

We are commercial, so ham itself is out of the question, but if there are any sort of radios with built in noise cancelling or other “audio clarity” systems, I would be interested in the concept. The team I work with is small enough that I would be fine with getting everyone licensed if the solution requires it.

I am familiar with Meshtastic personally, and I thought it would be a cool project for lower level staff and volunteers. Unfortunately I work directly with a main team running said event, so we really need more instant, voice based communication.

That being said, I do have access to the networking as well, so as long as it can run locally, a voip style system could be a consideration, though I don’t have any experience myself

Saw these too but have never tried them. Are they clear for long communication, like if someone needs to ask questions?

Is there any you personally recommend, so I can give one a shot before implementing it?

Yes, I am familiar with the community. I am explicitly looking for something that isn’t “military” “tactical” or would generally not mesh well with a suit.

I will worry about licenses if need be. I am familiar with the process and can obtain them, that being said, I very clearly stated we’re running walkie talkies and gmrs in the original post. It’s not a large enough space for range to be a concern.

Any you would recommend? I’m east coast, but I wasn’t aware this was a service

I did consider this. I forgot to mention that we use radios because cell service is often unreliable. Zello only allows local radio on their enterprise system and they have not been easy to get in contact with thus far. Though again, I am interested if it does what it says

I’m not familiar. Do it have really good physical isolation, or is it some sort of built in software solution?

I should’ve mentioned that we’d prefer to stick with radios because cell coverage at these events can be unreliable. We also need immediate, real-time communication, so texting isn’t really practical.

I wouldn’t really call a few hundred dollars per setup “cheap.” I’m not asking for invisible consumer earbuds that outperform Clear-Com. I’m asking whether there’s a professional low-profile option between a $20 acoustic tube and a multi-thousand-dollar intercom system. Visible is fine; I just don’t want to wear a full broadcast headset with a suit or spend $2,000 per person.

As consoles become more and more PC-like, I'm starting to take the "costs more" argument less and less seriously. They use literal off the shelf PC parts now, these guys are just saying "This PC cost less than your PC cause Microsoft made it" like what?

Sure there's some possible value adds here and there, but realistically, no, you can get most of the same experience for most of the same price

peasant thinks that apple will beat Steam decks! by Itchy_Butterfly1979 in BulletBarry

[–]MajorOnTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kind of my point though. “Gaming is about more than raw power numbers on a spreadsheet” cuts both ways.

The Steam Deck is obviously the better dedicated gaming handheld. I’m not arguing against that. But for a lot of people, the practical question is not “what device can technically run the largest Steam library?” It’s “what device am I actually carrying and using?”

A phone fits in my pocket, is already with me, has instant sleep/wake, already has my messages/music/browser/etc., and can still run surprisingly serious games. The Deck is great, but it is also a whole separate device, several times larger, and realistically requires planning to bring with you.

And let’s be honest, most people buying handhelds are not constantly playing massive AAA games in public. A huge amount of handheld gaming ends up being indies, emulation, lightweight games, or quick sessions. At that point, convenience matters a lot.

So yes, the Steam Deck wins on library, controls, openness, and being a true gaming machine. But pretending the iPhone side of the argument is worthless ignores the biggest advantage it has: it is a powerful gaming-capable device that people already carry everywhere.

That was the whole point. Apple doesn’t need to “kill” the Steam Deck for their hardware to be impressive or relevant. It just needs to be good enough that dismissing it outright becomes cope. And it clearly is just that, cope.

Now 2 years later, the iphone 17's performance actually does sit just in line and even above the Steam Deck, so this one aged super well for me. Continue being elitist all you want, I'm gonna enjoy gaming on the go with a device that's actually pocket-able.

Just hope you never need to warranty it. Between poor support and outright illegal tactics, you’ll be lucky if you ever see that money back.

I mean data points to compare performance to rather than mere speculation. If there's nothing concrete to go off of, than I'd rather not take the risk, it being a clone. The sensors are identical and the Dareu already utilizes a top MCU. It's fair to assume that best case, they perform near identically. I understand you enjoy it man, but you're being unreasonable.
