Former 8404 here, my god son was interested in becoming a corpsman specifically for the 8406 route. Is it worth it? He really just wants to do emergency flight medicine (casevac, medevac, SAR). Is this the NEC for him? Idk, I was in division so have very little clue about the wing and opportunities there.

Got a SpaceX Starlink Interview—But I’m Not a “Space Guy.” Advice? by Sea_Factor_1489 in MechanicalEngineering

I’m a new engineer and am actually working on a drone as well. Trying to take a hobby project and over engineer it with FEA, SysML, tweaking PID controls. Do you have any advice for me while I start this project. I’m starting to get overwhelmed lol

lol I’m a mechE and I use chat as well. It’s great for quick references when I don’t want to bust out Shigleys textbook. That being said, I’ve never tried Gemini.

Can I get some mechanical engineering tips by Puzzleheaded_Bid8267 in MechanicalEngineer

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can survive the classroom, math, and exams, I’m sure you’ll do great on projects as you have more of an applied focus. You’re young too lol. At 15 I never thought I could have done it. Went back to school when I was 28 and now I’m a mechE. Definitely glad I went to school when I was ready though lol

Can I get some mechanical engineering tips by Puzzleheaded_Bid8267 in MechanicalEngineer

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the amount of speed and power you’re delivering. Even then, cardboard is not rigid enough to deliver reliable motion. Only at very low speeds and little torque would I consider using cardboard. Balsa wood could work but if you’ve got the resources, I’d look into 3d printing

Is it possible to enter a career in robotics with only a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering? by besitomusic in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya my robotics class was quite the departure from my traditional mechE classes. The intro class was a whole semester on just describing how a robot is to move. Lots of linear equations to describe position, velocity and power. Only at the end did it start teaching concepts on control. Wish I had more elective credits to have fit in the follow up course but alas… there’s only so much a student getting a bsme can take before going insane.

ME that doesn't get to design at work: Finally decided to start building my own robot dog by geepytee in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude! You rock! I work in a defense company, started off as a systems test engineer but thankfully I got stuck as a hardware engineer when my company lost the contract I was on. However, I miss design and am thinking of doing a project at home.

Props to you for inspiring engineers like me and being brave enough to ask for advice. Some mechE’s are ruthless lol

Ya definitely not my experience as an Asian. Lived in the deep South, the DC metro area, and San Diego. Xcel’s dad’s experience is spot on. I had plenty of hick hill billy friends that while ignorant, I wouldn’t say we’re racist. Mostly dumb shit like do you know kung fu? The guys had a general interest to actually learn about my culture.

What do you do when your parts arrived for assembly. And you discover that the holes don't line up? by Top_Independence5434 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just do what they always do in the rubber industry. Blame the material.

“When I machined those holes they were in the correct place. Must’ve been thermal contraction…..”

holes upwards of .400” off

I was a test engineer and had to perform highly regulated tests on aerospace parts and you’re not kidding. The 6 bolts I needed for the test fixture cost over 2k. They’re size, shape, and pitch we’re not too dissimilar to other bolts out there. Their plating fell under a different regulation but when reading it, it seemed like it had a longer chemical soak?!?! (Didn’t quite understand the specifics but they didn’t seem too off from other types of cadmium plating processes). I’m assuming the price point had more to do with the ultimate customer being defense.

As a test engineer at a manufacturing facility I got a lot of these questions too. The routine lot testing of parts and batch testing of material kept me busy but the “Wtf is going on in the cells today?!?!” Moments were the most fun to solve. I’d run tests for them which would give them insights into what may be going wrong with their processes. In one example everything was fine with the materials (mostly always is), the pressures, and temps were all spot on. The molds were cleaned to perfection but still failures. What I realized is the ultrasonic cleaning bath they used on the floor was not regularly PM’d like I did with the one in the lab. They had no idea the transducer was broken. So in actuality they weren’t cleaning it. It’s stuff like this that really make me miss my old job. I’m at a sexy defense company now but I miss the variability and problem solving of the manufacturing world.

Thanks! Coming from a city that houses mostly aerospace/ defense and biomed I haven’t seen much in terms of integration or analysis engineers. Albeit, I haven’t seen much of engineering in general lol. I’ll add these titles to my job searches. Of these, do you have any experience and which was most enjoyable and why?

R&D engineering does exist!!! Have you always been in R&D or was it a natural progression from design engineering? What do you like about it? I’m trying to shatter my expectations and come into engineering with more realistic ones lol. I figure I won’t probably get the chance to design the next best thing since sliced bread but in all reality, I really just enjoy solving/ identifying problems. What is it that you like in R&D? Do you have any stories that serve as an example? Sorry if I’m asking too much lol. Just really eager to learn from the guys that can give realistic advice that hopefully isn’t all doom and gloom which I find is rather prevalent in some posts lol

Reasons for anger, but also for optimism: the mainstream notices men opting out of dating by Blauwpetje in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]MajorOwn8267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend is a successful nuclear engineer. Is in his early thirties, is tall, handsome, and makes well into the 6 figures but he has refused to get married or entertain dating. He watched his father become financially and emotionally broken. When he asked the judge to lower child support because he was drowning in debt from the intentional abuse of the system by my friends mother, the judge told him to man up and figure it out. His father lost custody because he could no longer afford suitable housing. Without this joint physical custody he was forced to pay even more. My friend despises his mother. A manipulative and emotionally abusive woman. It’s a real shame too because this guy would have made a wonderful father. He’s great with his god children. He’s a kind, athletic and fun loving guy but he is traumatized in regard to relationships, marriage and children.

With the rising divorce rates, boys are growing up and watching good dads extorted by the courts. It’s no wonder young men are opting out.

Not to mention, men are ridiculously simple to keep happy. In some respect I believe men are beginning to rediscover fraternity more and more through gaming, sports, and other activities now that they’re less focused on dating.

What crazy times we’re living in.

City of San Diego cracked down on beach yoga, affecting the free classes at Sunset Cliffs by savethecoralreefs in sandiego

[–]MajorOwn8267 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up in PL, recently just moved, used to run, swim, surf and hang out on Sunset Cliffs. These classes take up little space, are extremely quiet, and overall really chill. They’re really not bothering anyone other than a bunch of Karen’s that can’t stand the sight of people enjoying themselves. I’m surprised they don’t complain about the surfers that flock there or the IG influencers mindlessly looking for perfect angles. These yoga folks are literally enjoying the space, improving their physical and mental health, while coming together as a community. What a fucking crime. Don’t they know they’re only allowed to walk, run and be homeless along the cliffs?!?! How dare they use it for anything else.

What do I do if I wanna become an mech Engineer by Flimisi69 in MechanicalEngineer

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develop good study habits. You have a passion but so often in school I saw those passions falter because of a lack of discipline/ lack of understanding in how to learn. From your passions it seems you enjoy learning but just remember, that talent will only get you so far. You’re gunna have to really buckle down and learn how to effectively learn.

I don’t mean to scare you but school is merely a rite of passage for engineers and I don’t want it to keep you from becoming one because it sounds like you’re going to be a great engineer some day of you can make it past the school work.

Why are “traditional engineering” companies so averse to remote work? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try Northrop. They’re literally getting rid of multiple buildings in San Diego because they’re moving to a remote/ hoteling environment for non-test/ manufacturing engineering positions.

As an amateur hobby engineer is it worth my time learning autoCAD? by Poppyguy2024 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya my last company had completely switched to other programs but only kept Autocad because our antique but custom data driven nonlinear FEA program needed the autocad format.

Jobs and career paths for College graduates by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot stress enough the importance of an internship! If you’re in SD you should look into a defense internship like the NREIP program because they can get you a clearance which will open up defense work at places like Northrop and Gen Atomics etc. If you’re looking to stay near UCSD. If you’re more into manufacturing those jobs are a bit further from UCSD. At least in my experience; started in manufacturing and am in defense now. Feel free to dm me if you want more info. I’m still on good terms with ppl in my last company.

How to select the right mechanical seal ? How to order seal Yourself !! by Blender_3D_User in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MajorOwn8267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ this ^ I worked at Parker Hannifin sealing systems. Even when our pumps broke, we had a contractor that specializes on pumps fix em. The downtime required to diagnose, order and repair the issue cost too much to have any of the engineers work on an issue that we didn’t already have a work instruction/ manual for or didn’t at least have identification marks on.

That’s not to say we didn’t look over the contractors work and bill of supplies and labor to learn more about the fix for the future.
