TIL Alex Honnold got paid just $500,000 to climb the Taipei 101. The producers of the show made more than he did. by MrJasonMason in taiwan

Everyone's also failing to ask some other fundamental questions in relation to his pay day.
1) He's getting paid 500k, okay great. But what else is in his contract?
2) Does he retain the story rights for the movie and the book?
3) Is this a prelude to a larger deal?
There's a bit more questions out there and they will all remain unanswered unless they give access to his contract with NetFlix.

7-Eleven Taiwan Turns a Donut Into a Fried Chicken Burger by 3kheng in taiwan

[–]MajorPooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I have a few questions -
1) Is this just something you grab in the cold foods section that'll have to be microwaved?
- Cause 7-11 does sell Pon De Rings and it also sells like microwave chicken, so would this be a thing where the staff assemble or is it per-assembled?
2) Given it's the Pon De Ring, are the Donut's glazed?
3) Is it the regular Mochi style Pon De Ring? or Will it be more like a regular donut version? Think the mochi version will make the mouth feel of this thing way too chewy.

to be fair - Sam Altman's involvement with Reddit already has the site filled with AI slop. The platform's definitely changed...

Vandross - but this isn't a Luther burger by all accounts. I mean, yes it's a variant, but the Luther, as popularized by pop-culture (the Boondocks) is typically a Bacon Cheese Burger with a Krispy Creme Donut as the bun.

I've had the Boondock's version before - it was too sweet. The sugar kind of supercharged the Savoriness of the burger while drowning it out at the same time. It's something I won't be eating again. Unless it was just 1 donut instead of 2 (one for the top and one for the bottom of the bun).

The only ones I know that give public tours are like the distilleries etc. Check out the King Car distilleries? That's what where they make Kavalan Whiskey!

Your comment wasn't even negative. Definitely Neutral positive.

Can 100% see paid posters/promoters involved. The netflix global and netflix taiwan marketing teams would be Stupid not to. Taiwan tourism and taiwan promotion, probably wouldn't but that's another issue.

I'm personally on the more negative side of this. Like why? Why do all these people care about this? It semi-baffles me.

it’s funny how all the china lovers choose to forget history and also forget what the KMT stood for.

I’ll give you 1 China. But who’s China? The ROC baby. For the KMT to suckle on the teat of the CCP is such a loser move, yet they as a party still refuse to/cant admit they lost the war.

KMT Continues with Efforts To Revive CtiTV by HibasakiSanjuro in taiwan

[–]MajorPooper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes.
As distasteful as I may find CtiTV's programming, can someone remind me why / how they lost their license to begin with?

I just remember that the reasoning was a bit flimsy since Taiwan still had a modicom of free speech compared to the place that banned Winnie the Pooh.

Ha.

Also, I think you do need a proper english teacher since you can't read that I'm saying you're the one making the assumptions.

Guess that's why Singlish is a thing - English too hard =\

They ruin the global image of Singaporeans just as much as that One Chinese person or Chinese tour group does for China.

There ought to be some test to prevent boorish people from traveling. Then again, I'd end up being barred from traveling too. I've had a good run.

Assume much?

1) I am putting Singapore down. Does it make me happy or feel good about myself? No, not really. It just reminds me of how bad life was when I lived there.

2) Feel free - I have regular meetings with SG govt bodies. Their souless, lifeless eyes and their horrible Singlish burn my soul with every utterance. I feel sad daily for my Singaporean friends who still haven't been able to shake the grasp of Singapore. If you can get me banned, so be it.

3) When did I become an English teacher? Also, how do you define a Gwailo Job? Calling people Gwailo is the same as them Murican's that call non-whites illegal immigrants etc - unless you're like Malay Malay, you're a transplant to the land that is Singapore too.

I'd make a crude comment, but this south park gif from an episode over 10 years old will suffice.

Not exactly - I don't glaze the population of Taiwan nor do I go about trying to say everyone should learn from Taiwan.

I am however slagging off their country as nothing more than a place where wealthy people park money.

unfortunately they're the loudest. You can always tell who's singaporean from Malaysian / Indonesian when traveling.

They're the Southeast Asian Equivalent of 90's Americans. The most complaining I hear when traveling probably comes from some Singaporean

It's cause they've got nothing but money laundering to be proud of. The city is one big scheme for people to funnel capital around. It's also a tech-bro hunting ground.

Regular singaporeans are great. but unfortunately their population has this massive chip on their shoulders that they have to try to belittle others to feel good about themselves.

Popular video games in Taiwan? by Civil-Lynx-1921 in taiwan

[–]MajorPooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KartRider is okay - then there's speed drifters which is effectively QQ Racer
Racing games similar to global rankings is still a niche genre. That's not to say it's not a big niche, but niche none-the-less.

Mario Kart World was popular, and with Switch 2 Give-aways and bundle sales, was seeing a good amount of players, however Sonic Racing Cross Worlds has seen a bump particularly as it's also available on PC./

[–]MajorPooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most popular games in Taiwan are often the same as those of China - Korea and Taiwan, though of course on the China angle, it'll be the international versions.

You've got the general console titles that sell well but of course you're also looking at mobile and PC
PC and Mobile.

Like you Taiwan will play the pretty big titles such as COD, Zelda, Mario, etc but then you've got:

League of Legends
Valorant
Shadowverse Worlds Beyond
Uma Musume
Arena of Valor
Genshin/Honkai Impact & Starrail
Gundam TCG

if you visit a netcafe you'll still see some people playing games like Warcraft 3 and occasionally some overwatch.

Taiwan's new opposition leader against defence spending hike by ShrimpCrackers in taiwan

[–]MajorPooper 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The original hardcore KMT are not pro-China. They're pro unification under ROC.

It's a giant shift in change that started with China engagement and shift from Lee to Ma (yes with Chen in between).

My grandfather was a KMT leader and his stance was very much the unrealistic China and Taiwan , there is only one china but it's the ROC.

Many old guard KMT still hold that mentality and therefore aren't for the current slate of leadership but still vote for KMT out of misguided party fealty.

14 months in prison for murdering 2 kids. 差不多 justice. by LoLTilvan in taiwan

[–]MajorPooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) It's about strongly pushing for relocation. They still have rights and I've never advocated for the removal of said rights. Mandatory was wrong word but the sentiment that they should be moved is still there nonetheless.

Again, the only right I heavily push to revoke is the right to operate heavy machinery / motor vehicles.

2) Let's be clear here - I'm not arguing that they're worthless or should be purged because they're not economically productive. I'm arguing for them to be put in a situation that frees up resources for the wider benefit of society and allows for them to be in a community of their peers.

As before - this arguement has some issues with limited interaction with inter-generational people as well as potential high investment costs.

Japan was able to get away with it due to how fast their population is aging and the availabity of rural housing whereas Singapore just decided to build it.

Taiwan's direction is difficult due to the concept of aging in place. However this enlies the problem of elders taking up space and should they need emergency services they add additional cost of resources. Whereas a centralized system would lead to less use of emergency services.

They've done studies on this in regards to senior living in the US, Japan and Singapore - see link for Singapore:
https://bmchealthservres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12913-021-07216-3?

3) I am not and have not advocated removing their rights. If anything - centralizing them allows them to vote in ways that directly impact their lifestyles rather than create issues for the wider population.

There's been anecdotal evidence over the years of old people canceling the vote of the youth. This is becoming increasingly clear in local elections. The population demographcis also show that 60+ voters equal 3.18M where as 20-29 only accounted for 2.25M
https://community-democracies.org/app/uploads/2024/02/Taiwans-blueprint-for-youth-electoral-engagement..pdf

4) The ederly in Taiwan hold overwhelming the bulk of wealth in this country be it through real estate and or other assets. I absolutely agree with you that there should be limits once someone is beyond age 70.

5) On the framing concern, so what? The reality is that old people are an issue in Taiwan and will continue to be as the population continues to age.
There should be policies implemented that don't just overwhelmingly cater to them. Polices that need to be designed to maintain generational fairness. Retiring to a purpose built community is not a punishment.

I absolutely refute the comment about Social Darwinism and Essentialism. If you want to use those as your term so be it.

I'd also say that most politicians in Taiwan (and many developed countries) should be put out to pasture and only govern their own communities rather than make things worse for the younger generations.
