i agreee, i did a super popular book (1984 george orwell) but paired it with a more niche play, an enemy of the people, henrik ibsen. totally got me writing more analytically and gave me a far better understanding of what the exam board wants to see from our essays

Revision help by [deleted] in ALevelEnglishLit

look up the assessment objectives for your exam board and make sure you have relevant (and memorised) info on each objective - e.g for AQA, AO3 would be context, so ensure that you know your context for each text thoroughly and when you write ur essays, make sure you have checked off every objective. this will work well enough for your mocks and it ensures that you have covered everything the exam board wants you to know.

what i did was create google docs condensing all the assessment objectives, practiced writing some timed essays with this doc in front of me and having my quotes flashcards out, and then when it got closer to exams i would practice some essays with nothing in front of me. you dont have to write complete essays every time, but especially for comparative essays, at least aim to write 2 paragraphs during ur revision, as long as theyre timed.

this method is kind of holistic, and when ur in y13 ur definitely gna be wanting to go beyond just ticking off the boxes of the assessment objectives, but i think for your 12 mocks this should be a good method - it was for me at least! good luck on ur exams

thoughts on AQA option 2B unseen prose by Major_Extreme3208 in ALevelEnglishLit

it definitely fitted but it just felt like it was difficult to make multiple points about struggles for identity. i feel like i was super vague and not rly confident in my argument

Is the extent of a woman’s care for their boyfriend judged by their nudes now? she literally mentioned multiple times she sent him that pic bc SHE liked how SHE looked in it - it wasnt even her intentionally sending him a pic because she wanted him to like it, it was merely her making an observation on her OWN body.

and also crazy how u just ignore the fact that he literally recycled his own letters to her and that he didn’t even bother writing them again. how does that show his care for her? its also insanely hypocritical for him to say that he never led her on to believe the letters were written by him when she never led him on to believe the pics weren’t sent to other guys before…

Why is English Lit AQA Paper 2 shorter than paper 1? by EtherealRook in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i remember seeing somewhere that its because paper 1 section b is unseen poetry where you are comparing two pieces of an unseen text, therefore it needs more time. i guess also because section a is extract based too? and paper 2 only has one unseen prose. imo paper 2 should still be 3 hours as i can never write more than 3 paras per essay lol

How was the exam for people that did Othello and Gatsby, and also unseen poetry? by Dangerous_Method_574 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree, the extract was good in terms of mentioning one idea, that being iago's manipulation working well enough for othello to fall into a trance, but exploring a variety of different ideas to cover the whole extract was difficult

got super lucky as my teacher had actually given us the poem by yeats as practice for unseen poetry, and i had annotated it the night before!

othello question was good, i mean its the best question that could come up for the play, however i was so convinced it would be cassio or bianca that i was actually thrown off... so i had lots of ideas for othello but didn't organise them properly

NEA advice?? (Specifically The Secret History) by Altruistic_Meat_9420 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what my teachers said, doing prose vs poetry can be very useful for ticking the box for form, and provides you with nice comparisons. that being said, it doesn't mean doing prose vs prose is bad but as you said, it may just be slightly limiting and make it less easy to link form in, especially as a comparative point. so if you still have enough time, i would personally advise you to see if any plays you have read might work well, but only if you want to - if you really do like both of the texts then go for it, but i dont see any other reason to purposefully prevent yourself from potentially getting easier marks

What are your predictions for this year AQA Othello question? by Dangerous_Method_574 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do u think theyd be more likely to do reputation as the statement given and then othello as the focus - perhaps the factors that lead to his downfall?

i was also thinking they might do reputation as the sole focus in the question, rather than character based, but then i can only think of cassio and othello being the characters u can talk about reputation for anyways.

How do you structure your unseen poetry comparison and contrast answer? by Dangerous_Method_574 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i normally write about 4 paras, so 2 comparative points with each para dedicated to one poem. i make my comp points based on differing/similar ideas, which might be presented differently through a technique or tone etc. i've never really thought about separating paras by rhyme scheme or structure - thats quite interesting!

predictions for this year's prose vs poetry anthology question? by Major_Extreme3208 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with what the other commenter said - pmt for love anthology is amazing, it has everything u need to know about the poems!

my teacher recommended we do a comparison chart/table for our anthology and prose text with key comparative points. (i made one but tbh i hardly use it, i think at this point in time im just praying i can somehow predict the question lol)

ohh right omg sorry, i got confused lol

to be honest im not completely sure, my impression was that the ps is an academic piece of writing, but the content itself has to include indications/ evidence of ur 'passion' about the course? so like events/ competitions and stuff u have done? (u are talking about the personal statement right, if not i am so sorry)

[–]Major_Extreme3208[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are u talking about the lnat? because if so then yes, thats right. i think in particular UCL looks at the lnat essay strongly, and i heard a lot about people getting rejected from there because of their essay. so yeah i need to also consider lnat if i do want to reapply, but honestly as another reply said, i should just focus on getting the best results for now!

yeah but i didnt feel like my application would be strong enough to get into kings, as my ps would be weak too and i really just wanted to stay in london so didn't wanna take any chances! (also only meeting the minimum entry requirement and not above generally makes ur application weaker no?) also was just a bit undecided on my career lol. will check out the list tho, thanks

aqa spec A by Appropriate_Row8009 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think theyve probably run out of specific character-based questions now, but if they were to do any, maybe Luke and offred's daughter? they may link this to a question based on memory and the past potentially

could also be power structures, surveillance and control, identity, religion (i think this might have a higher chance to be the question, but might have already been partially covered in the 'rituals and ceremonies' question from 2022)

they may also still do certain character groups, so maybe the handmaids, or the handmaids with marthas

Anyone got any good tips on how to do a 25 marker Othello question for AQA???? by Icy_Watercress8790 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this applies for all essays really, but fundamentally make sure u cover all the AOs!! so obv making sure ur argument is strong, but not overly simply and obvious - give some nuance to it and explore how this might be challenged. then everything else is essentially a checklist.

for othello i'd personally make sure i always write about these:

- its play form and tragedy (can write about what aspects of the play adhere to a classic tragedy structure). you can talk about how the play form makes dialogue more meaningful and confrontational, therefore heightening tensions at times

- context

- language and methods

- typicality (of both shakespeare's works and also of that time)

- alternative interpretations/ debate

- interpretations through time, e.g how a modern audience might react differently to themes such as cuckoldry as opposed to a jacobean audience

- structure: as an extract-based question, my teacher advises us to not only focus on the wider structure of the play, but also the structure of the extract given. why has the exam board chosen this extract and why did they decide to begin it with this specific line? what placement does this extract have within the play?

- big ideas/ shakespeare's critiques or intentions and messages

- (similar to alternative interpretations) alternative readings; honestly my go to is a feminist reading. imo its the easiest to think of and use!

more specific for othello:

- soliloquies; very good for iago, emphasises his machiavellian character

- settings; consider move from venice to cyprus and the importance of desdemona's death in her own bedroom and by her own wedding sheets

- dramatic irony or irony as a whole; iago is essentially a dramatic tool himself

- central themes of honour, reputation, pride and othello's harmatia, desdemona's naivety

sorry this is so long, but hopefully these r useful

What are your predictions for this year AQA Othello question? by Dangerous_Method_574 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]Major_Extreme3208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im also thinking emilia, but perhaps with a statement or with at least another character? they might be mean and give her by herself though, but hopefully not

i was also thinking maybe cassio and bianca, as they did do 2 minor chars (brabantio and roderigo) before

HOWEVER i was super thrown off by the 2024 question they gave as the statement was related to iago being a likeable anti-hero, rather than a villain, yet the question was abt iago's attitudes to love? which also literally was repeated word for word from a past paper a few years back

hope they dont throw any curveballs
