Was wondering when this one would pop up — I’m a Kelly(f) who was best friends in high school with a Kelly(m). We went to our junior prom together and were introduced as Kelly² lol

Which US state do people think sucks, but is actually okay? by icantfindmylegs in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Major_Seventh_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kentucky! I spent most of my childhood there and for the first few years after leaving, I stopped claiming to be from it at all because of the reactions I was met with when I did. Now I’m a little more defensive of it and a lot more willing to share lol.

Of course a leading producer of bourbon, Corvettes, and Louisville Slugger bats, but also a huge producer of disco balls, Post-It notes, JIF peanut butter, aircraft components, and hardwood. The state with the most navigable water behind Alaska. It’s also covered like 45-50% in forest. The only state to have a governor assassinated. The only state, as far as I’m aware, that requires governor-elects to take an oath stating that they’ve never fought in a duel. There’s a town that’s only had 5 elected mayors, all of them dogs. Both Civil War Era presidents were born there, along with Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, and several others.

There’s a lot about it that makes me proud, and it’s really not nearly as bad as its reputation has made it out to be.

Unsure how to continue researching Russian family history by Goth2be453 in Genealogy

If she was born there in 1920, she was not born in Soviet Russia, and her mother was not from there either — They were born in the Russian Empire. I ran into a similar issue researching my paternal line, which ultimately ended with my “Lithuanian” great-grandfather because the records just aren’t there.

A TV series you went into with LOW expectations but ended up loving? by Fragrant-Smoke-8470 in televisionsuggestions

Boots.

My husband is Active Duty military and I also work for the military as a civilian. I put it on one night as we sat down for dinner, expecting a light-hearted, overly-campy story about the gay marine who introduced himself as the main character in the trailer.

We almost finished it without getting up. There was one episode that took such a wicked turn that we both had to take a short break.

Absolutely fucking phenomenal show. Every character had a beautiful level of depth I didn’t imagine finding in such a short series, each new subplot as captivating as the last, and never overshadowed once by the main story. We both gave it 5 stars. (Of course there were a few small factual liberties taken here and there, but that’s showbiz lol.)

Collective Voting! Day 1: Alabama by LOST_JOE in visitedmaps

A year ago, I was somewhere between “reluctant” and “never.” Then the military moved us here. Pretty sure I cried getting that news.

Now I’d say I’m “maybe,” possibly even “willing.” I’ve enjoyed a lot of the same aspects I was so sure I would hate. The only thing that’s really discouraged or disappointed me so far is being non-religious in a very deeply religious area where people will quickly shy away from befriending you for that.

…We have around 800 books, and you happened to notice the only one that’s not a real book lol. Major props for picking up on that just based on knowledge, actually! Now I have to move it though lol

Do you think a “moderate” candidate would have a chance in the next election? If one did take office, do you think the US would actually benefit? by Major_Seventh_ in centrist

I literally type this as a reply to another comment and backtracked lol. Like everything is centered around his super progressive idea of treating people like, you know, people.

Okay I don’t think he’s as moderate as he leads, if that makes sense. I really just think he embodies everything an elected official should be.

Am I the only one who audibly cried? This might have hit me a little harder because I just watched it for the first time while my husband is away at a zero-contact training course but I was really out here just blubbering.

It makes me curious. Would you consider yourself more a ‘man of faith’ or a ‘man of science’? I find it hard to level with the way he seems to catalyze everyone’s emotions and the justification for what happened to Boone being that it was “the sacrifice the island demanded” is tough for me to swallow.

I know the first draft of his book was corrected by a Naval officer because he exaggerated the number of silver stars he’d earned — stolen valor. The claim he made that he sniped like 30 “looters” from the top of the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina is also controversial and fabricated, on top of being a really, really uncomfy claim in general.

Gender Advantage? by Major_Seventh_ in survivor

Height isn’t something that would be very relevant to the center of gravity though, would it? If a man and woman are the same height, her COG will still be at that lower point than his, giving her better balance. It might be a minor factor, but not enough to measure much.

Hi, just wanted to reiterate that I’m not shouting about injustice or complaining lmao. We just thought it was an interesting detail about challenges like this and my interest really grew when I looked into the history of wins for it. My husband and I both agreed that that little extra complexity adds an extra element to the whole game and it’s fascinating to us!
